Slovenia (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"If this third edition of Lonely Planet Slovenia is anything like the first, it warrants a complete overhaul of the section entitled "WW II & the Partisan Struggle." Much misinformation has been disseminated since the end of that war, and only recently has the truth emerged concerning the true patriots of Slovenia. It is obvious that the author was given false and outdated information, and he therefore unwittingly perpetuates the myth of the Slovenian "collaborators."" Before exchanging a Vacation Property in Slovenia, I would read this book.

"...The author's ideas on the origins of the Slovenian people are badly researched, lazy, and basic. Certainly undeserving of any words bigger than 'bad', 'lazy,' and 'basic.'

The rest of it is quite good I guess, noting there's few reasonable attempts in English at a book on Slovenia..." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday Cottage to Exchange in Slovenia.

"I red the new edition of this travel guide with curiosity. In the previous editions I really missed the thorough description of the Mura (Slovenian: Prekmurje) region. Given the fact that Slovenia is a very small country and there is enough possibility to include almost every city where are interesting sights. Unfortunately it did not happen in the Mura region, again. For instance the microregion with the Hungarian minority is completely out. The charmly Lendava town with its castle and wine region is completely missing. How reliable could be a guide describing a small country with this mistakes? I strongly advise to the author to travel and discover this area, too. I hope in the next edition he is going to discover this "remote" area in this "big" country." This book has wonderfull information on Slovenia, well worth reading if you exchanging a Vacation Property in Slovenia.

"I spent a lot of money on my holiday to Slovenia (a two centre break with my family - one week in a farmhouse near Bled, the second by the coat in Portoroz). However, it's the ten pounds or so I spent on this book that gave me the most benefits. It helped me to find hidden gems that I'd otherwise have missed. Brilliant.

In fact, after a few days I managed to lose the book. (Some swine picked it up in on a cable car near Lake Bohinj!). I didn't hesitate to phone up Lonely planet and find out where I could get a copy locally. The next day I drove to the capital Ljubljana to buy it once more and consequently rescue my holiday!" www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Vacation Apartment to Exchange in Slovenia.

"As Lonely Planet are the only guidebook series to have produced a guidebook solely on Slovenia, this book unfortunately has the monopoly.
Slovenia is an amazing country and this book portrays that. However, for the areas I visited i found that the practical information was insufficient, especially with regard to hostels and budget travel. If you are intending to travel by train, I would definately recommend a visit to a tourist office in Slovenia for advice.
Although the book was not superb, I would bring it with me ona return trip." If you are thinking about exchanging a Vacation Villas in Slovenia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Slovenia.

"This is a superb pocket-sized book. Walks are clearly laid out with abundant markers; even where one had been moved, the details swiftly allowed us to find the next and get back on track. There are some excellent photographs and maps which allow the walker to vary the route without risking being lost. For example, the walk from Bled through Kupljenik to Bohinska Bela was one we divided into two to fill separate afternoons.

I would buy other guides in the series if they are as good as this." This book has a wealth of information on Slovenia, well worth reading if you exchanging a Holiday Casa in Slovenia.

Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995 (Book)

Customer Rating:
Safe Area Gorazde is a harrowing documentary comic destined to become a classic of war reporting. In the waning days of the Bosnian war, Joe Sacco, the cartoonist behind the acclaimed Palestine, made several visits to Gorazde, a UN "safe area" that had been repeatedly attacked by Serb forces. He interviewed survivors of the Serb siege and assembled their recollections. Sacco depicts the atrocities of the war in simple, restrained panels, but his attention to detail is everywhere, from the accurate renderings of mortar scars on the landscape to the history lessons carefully embedded throughout the comic.

Sacco never descends into sensationalism or exploitation of the war's victims, but instead adopts a subjective gaze that places readers in hiding spots from which they can only catch glimpses of the murders and rapes. Sacco leaves the particulars of these crimes up to the imagination of his readers, which is appropriate enough given the unthinkable nature of what took place in Gorazde.

The real impact of Safe Area lies in Sacco's immersion in the daily life of Gorazde. While other journalists left Gorazde as soon as they had the clips they needed, Sacco lived in the town for weeks at a time, becoming a vicarious resident. Although the conflict was largely over by this point, Gorazde was still surrounded and Sacco was an eyewitness to his friends' struggle not only to survive but also to maintain their sanity.

Safe Area is not just a catalogue of horrors and a condemnation of international indifference; it's also a moving portrayal of the human capacity to endure almost any hardship. Sacco refuses to fall into any clichés about the triumph of the human spirit here--the people of Gorazde themselves reject such notions--but he does offer up Safe Area as a testament to its survival. --Peter Darbyshire, Amazon.ca
Reviews:

"Sacco shows the human side of the Yugoslavian war through a brilliant and effective combination of prose and comic book illustration. Not only does he provide a history and time line of the conflict, but also what it meant to the people who lived through it - and those who didn't. Sacco portrays aspects of the war that the press seemed to miss. Shocking, but a must-read!" A wealth of information about Slovenia, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Alternative Holiday Alternative Holiday property in Slovenia.

"This book manages to make history and current events real in a way that CNN etc will never manage. Sacco populates his book with real people who survive the most God-awful experiences possible with humour and hope. Even the characters who appear but briefly are so strongly drawn that you care about what happens to them. The honesty of the writing is on a par with the likes of journalists like John Pilger and it is almost a shame that this has been produced in a comic strip format because it will put of those readers who hold the strange prejudice that comics are for children.

If you buy this don't just keep it to yourself, share it with the people you care about who care about the world. This will make them understand the human cost of ignoring ethnic cleansing." This book has great information about Slovenia. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Slovenia.

"I was eager to read this book, as I love the idea of the graphic novel applied to history, and this format worked brilliantly in Maus (a graphic novel about the Holocaust). Unfortunately, this book copies a lot from Maus but it just doesn't succeed. As in Maus, the story is told through an interviewer who is also a character in the story, and the victims recount their experiences in an authentic-style broken English. Unfortunately, in this book there is too much focus on Joe Sacco's personal experiences and personality, which were frankly dull. I just did not find it interesting or funny that he met some Bosnian friends who he got drunk with and who used to sing the lyrics of western songs. The coverage of the other events is also relatively flat. On the positive side, I think the depictions of the actual political events (using maps, etc.) were very well done; unfortunately this only comprised a few pages and did not make up for the weakness of the rest of the book." Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Villa in Slovenia, I would read this book.

The Fall of Yugoslavia (Book)

Reviews:

"I was looking for an overview of the balkan conflict. This book does not offer that. It does not give someone without a great deal of prior knowledge a good historical reference for what led to war. I feel like the author of this book assumes the reader is extremely familiar with the conflict and decided to write a book sharing some of his personal experiences that coincided with major events in the conflict. The chapters severely lack coordination. As somebody else mentions it goes into way too much detail about insignificant figures. I also purchased "Yugoslavia, Death of a Nation". Though I've only finished the introduction and first chapter I already feel like I've learned more than after completion of "The Fall of Yugoslavia". Maybe after completing "Death of a Nation" going back through "The Fall of Yugoslavia" might be interesting, doubt it though..." If you are thinking about exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Villas in Slovenia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Slovenia.

"Reading some parts of this book was one of my assignments in my "Contemporary Political Transitions" class in the University. When I read the assigned parts, I immediately decided to read the whole book. One of the most fascinating things about the book is that what you read there has been experienced lively by the author. Misha Glenny is very clear and he really manages to reach the audience. The chapters are very well organized. Especially the last chapter is very well organized and it includes a brief review together with an evaluation of the author. Nevertheless, if you decide to buy and read the book, I would advice you to make a brief research on the war in Yugoslavia and have a brief background. If you don't know anything about the subject, then you may find the book a little bit confusing. However, if you read the book having a little background about the issue, then you will definitely enjoy it." Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation House in Slovenia, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Slovenia.

"I picked up this book during the time that NATO begun bombing Serbia over the dispute for Kosovo and the Kosovo Albanians. I wanted to find out more about this troubled region.

It did not surprise me when Misha Glenny closed his book by indicating that the next Balkan Crisis would be over Kosovo. He certainly did get his facts right.

This is a higlhly informative and stimulating book. It explains the whole Balkan Crisis and tries to reason and explain the foundation of the crisis - Western Influence, ethnic differences.

A very informative book. Highly recommended." This book has wonderfull information about Slovenia. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Slovenia.

"Glenny has the skill to keep a reader interested during the whole of the book. Although this book is a few years old now and perhaps abit dated (it doesn't cover the Kosovo conflict and was published a year after the war in Croatia and Bosnia ended) it is still excellent reading for those who know little abit the region." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation House to Exchange in Slovenia.
