Tima Among the Maya: Travels in Beliza, Guatemala and Mexico (Book)

"I read this pretty quickly. There's no problem with knowing what the author is trying to say. I found the representation to be a little full of sad satire and sorry history lessens but then again the reality really has been horrific.

I will hang on to this and use it as a reference. I always find it interesting the way several 1st person accounts of a like place will produce inconsistencies in attitudes and reactions." If you are thinking about exchanging a Vacation Apartments in Mexico, I would buy this book to take with you while in Mexico.

"Ronald Wright takes us to Belize, Guatemala and the Yucatan, visiting various archeological sites and people along the way. This is a great travelogue with lots of history included. It is well researched including a glossary, notes, bibliography and index for the reader who wants to delve deeper. Good reading if you're planning on going to this part of the world." Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation Casa in Mexico, I would read this book while in Mexico.

"A friend lent this book to me whilst I was travelling the Maya trail. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy it once back in England.
The story follows the travels of Ronald Wright starting in Belize, then taking a circular route through the Yucatan and Chiapas areas of Mexico, and Guatamala.
Along the way, the author describes the people he meets, the local customs, and the often turbulent history. There is plenty of detail about the Mayan buildings and their complex constructions of calenders and measures of time.
A most absorbing book." Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Mexico, I would read this book.

The Rough Guide to Mexico (Book)

Reviews:

"I 've just finished a month of travelling through mexico (Oct 1999). This guide gives a lot of interesting and essential information about live in Mexico, food, Mexicans' attitude, transport, health... It's a real pleasure to read it as it is written in a very understanding and fascinatingly way. I was really surprised of the accurate price information of hotels and restaurants in the Guide. Moreover, the useful tips about what transport facility to take, saved me a lot of money, which is of course important when travelling on a budget. Also citymaps and the plans of the ruins are very detailed and an indispensable tool when entering new places. Furthermore, I visited some less known, but wonderful places, mentioned in the Guide, where almost no other tourists came. Summarized, I'd suggest this book to everybody who plans to make a trip to Mexico!" Before exchanging a Vacation Casa in Mexico, I would read this book.

"This book was a disappointment. It's information was incomplete and uninformative (and I'm talking about the recent FIFTH Edition -- published in 2002). Even in the touristy beachy destinations, I did not find the information helpful. Many of the budget hotels listed were closed, and there were no similar alternatives provided. Very little historical background for the sites I saw. Not much value added. I spent time on the Pacific Coast (not Baja) and in the Central Highlands. For Nahrit, Jalisco, the Bajio, and Michoacan states, it's practically worthless. Some of the worst maps in the business (Lonely Planet has excellent maps, so even if its information is lacking, at least you have reliable orientation). I would be VERY CAREFUL about buying another Rough Guide." This book has supper information about Mexico. So take it with you when you Exchange a Vacation Casa in Mexico.

"Rough guides are ideal for a certain kind of holiday. If you are planning to go to an all inclusive resort in Cancun and only venture out for arranged excursions then this book will never leave the shelf. Rough guides are for those who want to explore the real thing. That is why I won't visit any country without a copy.

This does not disappoint. The factual information is accurate and helpful. The restaurant recommendations were welcome - especially the wonderfully named 'Gory Tacos' in Downtown Cancun!

The information on archeological sites such as Coba and Chitchen Itza was extremely helpful, the travel tips essential.

The only slight reservation is that a bit of snobbery sometimes slips in. For example the resort of Akumel is dismissed as expensive and shallow. In fact it is beautiful and well worth the visit being quiet but accessible.

For all that this is still the best guide book for the thinking traveller!" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Mexico. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Vacation Apartment in Mexico.

"I took this book backpacking in Mexico and found it to be a lifesaver. It gave detailed information and descriptions of towns, events, culture and history. The only problem was that some of the opening times of various places were sometimes slightly out, but that can't be helped." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday Villa to Exchange in Mexico.

"Am in mexico right now, regretting buying this and not the new LP but it gives good info on the history of places, maps bear little resemblance to the towns they represent at times though. Not much good if on a budget as no price indications given for hotels. Out of date LP much better than this current version of RG Im afraid! But if you dont have a tight budget and can wing it on the maps it could be a nice guide." If you are thinking about exchanging a Holiday Villas in Mexico, I would buy this book to take with you while in Mexico.

Mexico (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)

"Lonely Planet seems to be too lazy or [penny-pinching] to keep their guides truly updated. Oh, they may have a 2002 edition, fine, but is it truly updated? Has someone actually GONE to the hotels and checked prices? Has someone actually had a meal in the recommended restaurant in this decade and reported back? Unfortunately the answer is no.

The prices in the book are WAY off! I realize there can be some fluctuations, but I mean, we're talking 40-50% more than the books say, which leads me to believe no one from Lonely Planet has actually GONE there to ask prices in the past 2-3 years!

Also, some of their recommendations, for example in Guadalajara, for hotels are terrible. Lousy overpriced hotels. Meanwhile, I found one on my own (the Don Quixote) that was very nice, and reasonable.

I think this book is okay if you want a general idea of the places and culture and etc. of Mexico, but for specific recommendations of restaurants and hotels, it is mostly useless!" If you are thinking about exchanging a Holiday Properties in Mexico, I would buy this book to take with you while in Mexico.

"I just got back from a month in Mexico. The book was probably quite impressive back in the early 90's. However, many of the hotels and restaurants listed in the book have gotten so much business that they have lost what good attributes they originally had. Also, many of the prices quoted in the book were way off. The book prices were frequently one-half what the concierge or waiter quoted. The peso has not changed enough for a 5 dollar hotel room to become 12 or 15. Perhaps that is the risk one finds with any guidebook.

Museum hours were consistently incorrect, especially for Mondays, weekends and evenings.

This book might keep you out of trouble, but it is not the guide for a budget traveler." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Vacation in Mexico. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Casa in Mexico.

"I've been quite a fan of the Lonely Planet guide books even though I'm not really a 'budget traveller' any more. However, this particular guide could really do with updating. Almost all of the costs quoted are way off the mark (the reality being that most hotels/entrance prices are near enough double). It also suffers from the Lonely Planet curse of reverse snobbery - ie. describing anywhere that sees more than one tourist a year as being spoilt by 'over-development'. I found many cities and towns in Mexico both lovely and vibrant regardless of the descriptions in this book. Don't be put off." Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Mexico, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Mexico.

"I have been living in Mexico City for over two years now, and a friend recently came over to visit from the UK. We set off to Guanajuato City and San Miguel with this edition of the guide in hand, only to find that a large percentage of the information regarding about this part of Mexico (Bajio) is incorrect. The hotel prices are way off and the restaurant info is completely off beam, and forget about trying to check out any of the nightlife listings. Things change fast in Mexico, amigo but not this fast." Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Villa in Mexico, I would read this book.

Maya World: Guatemala, Belize, Southern Mexico (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:

"The book is an excellent introduction to the Mayan civilisation and the area that they inhabited. The book provides a sizeable amount of accurate and helpful information on all aspects relevant to the independent traveller. It has very good information on getting to and from each destination and accurate descriptions of places to stay. The text is enjoyable to read, well set out, contains some funny anecdotes and is not too bulky. The book is comparable to "Mexico and Central America" from the Footprint series. The Footprint book is bigger and would suit people travelling the whole of mexico, not just the south. Both books are easy to read but "The Maya World" is set out better as the text is less cramped. A very handy book to have." A wealth of information about Mexico, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Holiday Holiday property in Mexico.

"was sad to have this guide stolen on a bus in mexico. one of the best guide book i have used. the insight to mayan culture glyphs ect could be increased as it leaves you hungry for information, but this is obviously a plus point in some ways as well.
worst point is for eating out, and is definately the most innacurate part of the book, many restaurants having gone long before or apparently having never existed.
the area covered is great and coveres the perfect trip to central america." Relax with this book when on Alternative Holiday in Mexico. It would be so handy when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Mexico.

The Conquest of Mexico (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"Thomas is an extraordinairily accesible historian.

Although a little slow in the first two chapters, which Thomas uses to set out the background of the Spaniards in Cuba & Hispaniola, this is a brilliant account of the conquest of the Aztecs by Hernan Cortes. Thomas' research is complete and he does an excellent job of explaining how so few subjugated so many. Thomas makes a great job of weeding out the chaff from the other accounts you might be familiar with.

Rich with relevant context (politics back in Spain, the economics of the Carribean, legal issues to do with the classification of the native indians) this account is probably the best ever written. It makes an excellent story, even though the approach is thorough and absolutely non-fictional." This book has supper information about Mexico. So take it with you when you Exchange a Vocation or Holiday Villa in Mexico.

"To those who have a passing interest in Mexico and the Spanish conquest, this book cannot be too highly recommended. It is amazingly thorough, is based on incredibly wide-ranging research, and is written with an elegance and grace which belies the extraordinary welter of facts through which Thomas has to sift.

The character and personalities of all the various players come to the fore, and Thomas also does an excellent job of conveying the atmosphere of those times, as well as in adding little details like the weather and the scenery to give a real sense of what those terrible years were like.

In short, this is just a brilliant book - balanced, authoritative, erudite, and surprisingly moving - if you have any interest in Mexico you should read it. It is probably the best work of history that I have read." www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Vacation Cottage to Exchange in Mexico.
