"Having just got back from Gozo I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It was superb! It is written in a way that makes you feel like the author is with you. The tours simply have to be followed, as they take you to areas you would not normally see. We had great fun, and there was always a watering hole exactly where the book said it would be, and usually with a great view." "This is an excellent book...however there are a few places he missed. The pub in Mellieha that has FANtastic ribs and steak,
and the excellent French restaurant in Marsaskala. (The waiter here knows so much about the fresh fish you'd swear he'd caught them himself!)

This is a British made publication, which means: 1) you have great detail on after hour clubs, bars, and entertainment; 2), there will be practically no attempt to help you with the local language (which for the most part the natives can understand & speak English, even if they are heavily accented); 3) there will be no hesitation to give opinions along with the facts; 4) there will be good information on bus routes and transportation options.
There are only 4 pages of photographs out of the 400, so it helps to team this book up with one like the AAA Spiral Guide which is chock full of photos, but this Rough guide is the one to stick in your pocket when you head out into the street." "Paul and I went diving in Malta armed with this guide. Before we went we read it and it gave us a good feel for what to expect. Once we had dived there we agreed that the book gave an accurate reflection.

There were a few times when the schematic maps of the dive sites weren't quite accurate, but in general one was able to picture the dive by the drawings in the book.

"I read two accounts of the Great Siege before. This one was better than both of them, and I sure will read more of Ernle Bradford's books - about the Knights and on other subjects.
I just have one comment - this book needs better maps. Or just NEEDS THE MAPS. There's only couple, they are scarce on the details, and very generic, more like a contour maps. That's the only weakness. And I'm not sure why Bradford is using mixed geographic naming convention - some of the names are Maltese, some are Italian (I guess those were used by the Knights at the time).." "This book is much better than most novels, it makes history alive and it is a delight to read. However, if it awakens your interest in sixteenth century Mediterranean history, there is a thing which is not totally correct. Bradford tells us the day-to-day story of the siege as the knights saw it. The overall strategic picture is somewhat distorted as he seems to forget that Spain was not (in fact it could not) leaving the Knights to its fate, the destiny of Western Mediterranean was at the stake. So if you are interested in what was really going on, please read "Gunpowder and Galleys" by J.F. Guilmartin. In the other hand, if what you want is more "action", go for "The two sieges of Rhodes" by Brockman and "The fall of Constantinople" by Runciman as these are the antecedents of Malta told in a really lively way."
