Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"This guide is great, at least from a pre-trip standpoint. When it comes to planning a trip to Malaysia, the historical and cultural aspects of the book are above reproach. The authors clearly know their way around the country. But that doesn't translate into using the book when you get to Malaysia. While hotel prices are listed, they're done so using a code system, forcing readers to continue flipping back to the key located early on in the guide. I've relied on Lonely PLanet's guidebook before, and I'll keep doing so - only because its layout is superior to the Rough Guide." This book has best information about Malaysia. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Villa in Malaysia.

"this rough guide isn pretty much the same as the other guides.. as usual in singapore it contains the usual places.. orchard, little india, sentosa, east coast and the usual touristy places. It does not include the heartlanders area eg. Hougang, Yishun etc. For eg, in woodlands.. it only mention the the zoo.. did you know that's a big Shopping Mall in Woodlands called the Causeway point.. nect to the MRT station.. As for eating places.. it fail to capture the good places for local food.. may interest the food lovers and those adventourous enough to try..

It should include a portion on the heartlanders.. I'm sure some tourist may want to see our locals their way of life.. for eg a tour of an HDB estate (public housing) that may include the market, the coffeeshop, look at the flat inside out.. etc.. the peculiar and distinct characters of the heartlanders.. etc.. otherwise tourists may think S'pore is just of the "place"" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Malaysia. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Holiday Apartment in Malaysia.

"Once again Rough Guides have proved to be the most definitive guide to wherever I travel. Great stuff, reliable information, and of course its something to read while chilling out in some of the world's most interesting countries!" A wealth of information about Malaysia, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Vacation Vacation property in Malaysia.

"A disappointing guide, especially if you want to go Borneo, there's a general lack of detail and a feeling of it being out of date.
Also not much information for scuba divers and the book omitted the island of Layang Layang altogether.
It was better for the more commonly travelled places such as KL and Penang on peninsular malaysia." If you are thinking about exchanging a Alternative Vacation Houses in Malaysia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Malaysia.

"This guide book was very helpful for my travels in Langkawi, Penang, KL and Singapore. The accommodation options were extensive, and it was very easy to navigate with this book. However the train times were slightly off, and it worked out a lot faster to take the bus. Overall thanks Lonely Planet." If you are thinking about exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Villas in Malaysia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Malaysia.

Lonely Planet Malay Phrasebook (Phrasebook S.) (Book)

Reviews:

"This book is extremely useful especially if you are outside the main cities such as Malacca or Kuala Lumpur. Malay people are very self effacing and your use of the phrases in this book will really open doors. Also, the social interaction hints to proper behavior are very good and useful too." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Vacation in Malaysia. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Casa in Malaysia.

"I got this phrasebook as a gift. I was skeptical at first because of its child-like appearance, but once I started looking through it I found it to be amazing. No other Malay book has the detail that this one does. With short paragraphs at the beginnings of each section, it ensures the best understanding of the culture. The authors are very knowledgeable and knows their Malay. I would recommend this reference book to anyone who is even considering a trip to Malaysia or is interested in the culture." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday Villa to Exchange in Malaysia.

"This guide covers all the basics making your stay in Malaysia that little bit easier , as all basic and intermediate phases are covered. With a little luck you will be able to get food and drink and a roof over your head, and more importantly you will know how to order that all important pint of local beer, and know which foods not to eat." This book has a wealth of information on Malaysia, well worth reading if you exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Malaysia.

"Initially I was rather dubious about buying this book as I wanted to learn as much Malay as possible and it seemed so small! I additionally purchased a CD & book set, but it is the compact Lonely Planet book which has been getting the most use. It is very easy to pick up and read, and as well as teaching the language, it has interesting comments on culture and history. Thoroughly recommended, and compact enough to take everywhere with you!" Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Property in Malaysia, I would read this book.

Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
If you're planning anything more than a Kuala Lumpur stopover or a fast overland commute from Thailand to Singapore, Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei is an essential companion. In fact, clocking in at nearly 700 pages, it may even inspire you to spend extra time in this region, which has only been divided into the three distinct countries since WWII. Encompassing Chinese, Indians, Malays, rainforest tribes, "original people" and sea-gypsies, with their innumerable religions it has one of the most diverse cultures in Asia.

The cover is emblazoned with a turtle and the vague slogan "The adventure starts here". Neither gives you an idea of what you'll find in an area so hard to categorise. Culture ranges from the hi-tech of Kuala Lumpur's Cyberjaya zone or the 88-storey Petronas towers to the ancient longhouse communities deep in Borneo's jungle. You can shop in Singapore's Orchard Road malls or experience the abundant wildlife of Taman Negara National Park in Peninsula Malaysia. You could check out the water villages of Brunei, one of the worlds smallest but richest counties; discover bat caves and orang-utans in Sarawak; climb Mount Kinabalu in Sabah; or check out the incredible diving waters off Semporna.

Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei is rammed with reasons why the region, arguably the least-fashionable bit of Southeast Asian backpacker itineraries, should be given more thought. One Amazon.co.uk reader complains that the previous edition was disparaging, but Lonely Planet should be praised for their honesty in pre-warning travellers where other guides might gloss over the negative. Equally, this guide puts many of the preconceived notions in context. Yes, Singapore is obsessed by fines and orderliness, but it also has a surprisingly vibrant nightlife, joyous hawker centres overflowing with cheap tasty food and is a fascinating microcosm of Asia. And yes, there is alcohol scarcity and problems for women in some Moslem areas of Peninsula Malaysia, but it is also a very multi-ethnic country. However, popular notions of Brunei being expensive and boring are confirmed--not being a place for budget travellers, it gets just 26 pages. --Sarah Champion

"We ended up calling it "the Bible". Why? Because all the answers are in it.!! Several times we said to our selves that this information should have been in LP. And looking one more time - it was usually there. LP helps you plan and avoid vasting time. Of course you shold try to do things which is not mentioned in LP but this can be a major challanges. The guide goes every where and the information is incredibly reliable. So if you go - bring LP or bring no guide book at all - alternatives are poor sustitutions. We also brought a Footprint - but the reality is that nobody is above or besides LP. 22-08-2001" Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation Casa in Malaysia, I would read this book while in Malaysia.

"We found it very useful, and the great advantage is it's not too big!!

The one gripe i do have is that it gives border info as if you are travelling south to north (penisular malaysia). I wasn't, so it was frustrating to find the advice for getting to the towns beyond the border only went as far as "...to get to Hat Yai take a bus...etc..."." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Holiday in Malaysia. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Malaysia.

"I agonised over a number of guidebooks to take out to Malaysia with me and ended up with this one. Fortunately, I got it right - none of them are particularly cheap and it's a pain to take something out that turns out to be useless.

Seriously, if you're travelling to Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei, don't go without the Lonely Planet guide, it's absolutely invaluable. As well as the usual stuff, there are cultural tips to help you avoid offending the people; the crits about places to visit, hotels and restaurants don't pull any punches so if they're not worth it, you'll know in advance; and there's loads of historical information to keep you well informed.

As a companion to this, the Malay phrase book is a must, although so many people speak English, you don't need to worry. It is nice to be able to say please and thank you in Malay though - the people seem to appreciate it!

You can't do better than this one. As another reviewer says - this is the Bible." A wealth of information about Malaysia, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Malaysia.

"The Lonely Planet guide to Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei is one of the worst travel guides I have used. Although it does give certain factual information, I found this guide to be poorly written, somewhat cynical, and extremely negative in many points of the text. ...There are numerous references to the lack of alcohol throughout the text. The facts in the Diving & Snorkeling section were clearly written by someone who has had little experience with these sports, and only a shallow knowledge of the area. The entire book is littered with negative statements: Kuala Besut is "grubby" (p.344), Kuala Terengganu's Chinatown "comprises the usual array of hole-in-the-wall Chinese shops" (p. 332), and various other disparaging remarks. Overall, I found the section on Peninsular Malaysia to be highly insulting and did not accurately portray one of the most beautiful countries in southeast Asia." This book has great information about Malaysia. So take it with you when you Exchange a Vacation House in Malaysia.

"This book has a mass of interesting information regarding the largely untold story of the infantrymen fighting in the jungles of Malaya in the early 1950's. Events are described in good detail, it is almost possible to really visualise the treachourous swamps and imagine the nervewracking periods maintained in ambush positions - waiting for silent but ever present communist enemy.

A thoroughly good read with many excellent descriptive photographs taken by the author at the time." Relax with this book when on Alternative Vacation in Malaysia. It would be so handy when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Malaysia.

"This is probably the only reliable account of the part played by 1st Bn Manchester Regiment during the Malayan Emergency between 1951 and 1954. Maps, photographs and drawings enhance the work. It should be an essential read for the casual reader, vereran, student and any professional historian researching the Malayan Emergency." Buffaloes Over Singapore: RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and Dutch Brewster Fighters in Action Over Malaya and the East Indies 1941-42 (Book)

"This is another in a series of books written by Brian Culls, Christopher Shores, or another of the latest generation of WWII aviation historians from Grub Street who are begetting comprehensive histories of often little explored WWII aerial arenas. The aerial defense of Singapore has been largely neglected by historians. Often, when one of these writers publishes, there is little left to explore on the topic. Cull's research isn't quite up to that standard in this volume. This is due in part to the fact that his subjects lost the battle and, thus, many of their records. (Ever wonder what the battle history of Japan's 68th Sentai at New Guinea was?) Japanese records don't exactly abound either. Nonetheless, he does an excelent job and I recommend this work mightily to anyone interested in the Pacific air war." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Malaysia. It would be so handy when you Exchange a Vacation Villa in Malaysia.

"Once again Brian Cull has delivered the goods, as with his previous books "Hurricanes over Malta"
"Spitfires over Sicily" etc. He has managed to combine historical fact with the human story. In this book we see how the RAF and Commonwealth fighter pilots were literally thrown to the wolves, yet how flying this obsolecent aircraft, gallantly fought to the bitter end.
Mr. Cull is to be commended for both the quality of his research, and of his ability to tell the story in a very readable manner. Definitely a must buy for anyone interested in the far eastern airwar.
Bruce Lander" Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Malaysia, I would read this book while in Malaysia.

"Once again Brian Cull has demonstrated his mastery as an aviation historian. While assembling the full factual details he still manages to give the human story. As with his previous works this most detailed record of a forgotten campaign is extremely readable and a must buy for any serious WWII aviation enthusiast." Before exchanging a Vacation House in Malaysia, I would read this book.
