The Japanese Kitchen: 250 Recipes in a Traditional Spirit (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"I took this book with me on a year-long stay in Japan. There is literally nothing that I ate there that I couldn't find out about in this book. The lack of photographs is more than made up for by the excellent explanations and technique descriptions. I really appreciate that Ms. Shimbo gives you the Japanese and English names for the necessary ingredients - makes it much easier to shop for them at an Asian market." Before exchanging a Holiday Villa in Japan, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Japan.

"This is the pinnacle of Japanese cooking. Here for our kitchen and table comes this expert advice on enjoying entry into this fascinating cuisine.

It is full of tips and advice on ingredients, techniques and preparation of authentic Japanese dishes.

There is task of finding rare ingredients first, from international cuisine section of supermarket or better yet from gourmet store, or mail order source in this book.

Book is void of photos but has fine drawings which aid in prep techniques and ingredients.

Have tried some new eating experiences from this book and have heard raves of diners who enjoyed the likes of: Japanese Stuffed Pancakes (Okonomiyaki); Swordfish in Yuan Style; Chicken Breast Fillets in a Crust of Mung-Bean Noodles.

There is sizeable section on Sushi." Before exchanging a Vacation Cottage in Japan, I would read this book while in Japan.

"I am an American who lived in Japan for several years. I teach Japanese language at the high school level. I have been cooking some of the Japanese foods that I loved in Tokyo, Odawara, Koenji, Fuchu, and other places, for years. This is the first cookbook I've seen that gives clear instructions on how to prepare these foods and explains the ingrediants so that a gaijin (non-Japanese) can understand and execute. She gives great stories of the foods that add to your understanding. When I get done cooking recipies from this book, my food tastes like the foods I ate in Japan.
I recommed this as the first and primary Japanese cooking book in your kitchen." This book has best information about Japan. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Japan.

"I have just had the pleasure of spending a week with Hiroko Shimbo, translating for her during a 16 hour course. The book is extensively researched and recipes are adaptable to seasonal and available ingredients. I have tried her receipes first hand, and I can assure you they're delicious." Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Japan, I would read this book.

Lonely Planet Japan (Travel Guides) (Book)

Reviews:

"As some other reviewers here have noted, this book seems to have been written by people who don't actually like Japan, Japanese people, Japanese culture, or pretty much anything Japanese at all. As such, they spend too much of the book showing how they are so superior to everything Japan has to offer. If you follow this book, you will end up missing so much of what this fabulous (albeit, at times difficult) country has to offer. Well, OK, this book does have some useful information. But, you will be best off with just about any other guide book." Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Property in Japan, I would read this book.

"I rented a car at Narita (Tokyo) and headed north on a 3-week road trip. This book has some reasonable hotel recommendations, even at the higher end of the price scale, but it is hard to understand how the authors of the book picked restaurants. At one Lonely Planet favorite I was served a soggy tuna sandwich that might have been found in England circa 1950. A place in Sapporo billed as serving "authentic Indian food" had nothing on the menu that I recognized from Indian restaurants in the U.S., England, or India. Finally the only restaurant in Japan where I managed to get food poisoning was a Lonely Planet suggestion.

Good on hotels, however, and the maps are helpful once you get into a city or region." This book has a wealth of information on Japan, well worth reading if you exchanging a Vacation Cottage in Japan.

"Not as helpful as other Lonely Planet guides in terms of finding your way around a country. Background information on history, culture, and social norms is undeniably comprehensive, yet for the first time non Japanese speaking visitor, the book can be as confusing and infruriating as the Tokyo underground. Directions are vague, maps lack detail, and the layout of chapters is muddled. The book contains many recommendations on restaurants, shops and historic sights, yet actually finding such places on the basis of the instructions given frequently proved to be a major challenge. The lasting impression is one of frustration, since the book provides so many indications as to what to see and do, and yet does not adequately allow you to find them." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Holiday in Japan. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Japan.

Japan (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

"This book is not marred by the "where can an English-only speaker find a good place to get drunk and party" spirit of the Lonely Planet guide. Sadly, however, it falls short of the Lonely Planet in the crucial departments of maps and index. If you're in a rental car the fact that the Rough Guide maps don't show route numbers will be a painful discovery. For train travelers, the book would be a lot more useful if the index were more comprehensive." Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Property in Japan, I would read this book while in Japan.

"This is the first time that I have been travelling with a Rough Guide book and I found it invaluable. Not only was it good at pointing out places of interest, but it also contained very useful information about travel arangments to the places along with prices. It also contained great stuff about accomodation in various cities and towns which we used on a number of occasions to geat success. When I next go abroad I will definitly pack the relevant Rough Guide book." Before exchanging a Vacation Casa in Japan, I would read this book while in Japan.

"As it's names suggests, this book is a good comprehensive and readable rough guide to Japan. However, if you want a more in-depth source of info you'd be better off contacting the Japanese Tourist Office and asking them to send you pamphlets and maps. There are places which are not covered by this book and many rural places are mentioned only in passing. There are sections where the authors have clearly visited and remembered enough to write down directional guides, but on the whole, I'd say that the book provides an overview of what's on offer. Overall, I'd recommend it to someone who has never visited Japan, but to get the most out of your holiday, I'd use this as starter reference only. My only gripe is that there aren't enough pictures and you don't get a feel for the places." If you are thinking about exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Apartments in Japan, I would buy this book to take with you while in Japan.

Harumi's Japanese Cooking (Conran Octopus Cookery S.) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"Harumi's introduction of Western ingredients to the Japanese style of cooking is truly inspired. After all, the Italians wouldn't have spaghetti if Marco Polo hadn't brought noodles back from China. Many of Harumi's recipes are completely Japanese however, but her combination of traditional and Western foods (even Gruyere & Pesto!!) is innovative and exciting. As an English woman, brought up in Japan, I have had to make my own Japanese food at home since I have lived in the West Country where it is virtually unavailable. I consider myself to be well versed in Japanese cookery, but this book has opened a whole new world for me...... and there are plenty of recipes for the uninitiated." Relax with this book when on Vocation or Holiday in Japan. It would be so handy when you Exchange a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Japan.

"I've thought about buying this for a while then did last week. Tried 3 recipes over the weekend - really good food, I was impressed - I'm planning to try quite a lot more. It's a very good looking book, well laid out with nice photos. Most of the ingredients are pretty easy to get hold of (well if you have access to a Japanese food store) and substitutes are almost always listed. It didn't get 5 stars because I had problems with one of the dishes (the instructions for the warm aubergine salad says to microwave the aubergine - DON'T - it makes the skin really tough) and also the fact that it doesn't give much guidance on putting menus together (e.g. it says "serves 4" but you need to combine with other dishes - but how many? what works well together?). But minor gripes aside this is an excellent book" Relax with this book when on Alternative Holiday in Japan. It would be so handy when you Exchange a Alternative Holiday Property in Japan.

Shogun: A Novel of Japan (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"In a word. Inspiring!

Set soon after the European discovery of Japan, this novel charts the adventures of an English pilot, Blackthorne through what was then the alien civilisation of Japan. This novel has something for everyone, the harsh realities of war, death and honour; comedy and romance; an insightful look at Japanese culture during the late 1600s and an excelent introduction to the art of intrigue and leadership.

Do not be detered by the length of this book, pick it up and start reading. I guarentee that you will want to continue after chapter one. Sixty or so chapters later you will think it was too short!" Before exchanging a Vacation Casa in Japan, I would read this book while in Japan.
