The Rough Guide Dublin (Mini Rough Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"I have read several guides to Dublin and the Rough Guide is the best by far. It is packed full of information in, and unlike many of the other guides, it includes information on off-the-beaten path destinations and day trips outside of Dublin.

It has lots of practical information that the first-time traveler to Dublin should know, like what buses you can take from the airport, the (new) location of the Dublin Tourist Office, and the costs of public transport.

The style of the Rough Guide is very enjoyable as well. Instead of just a few recommendations for rooms and restaurants, the guide includes many suiting virtually all tastes and budgets.

Highly recommended." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vocation or Holiday in Ireland. It would be so usefull when you Home Exchange a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Ireland.

"Fab. All the info was accurate, even down to what number bus I needed, and the prices of everything were only about 50c out (that is becuase of the time since the book was printed). Gave detailed info about ideas for days out, where to stay, where to eat, etc, and had interesting information about most places, detailing some of it's history.
Also contained accurate maps to help me find my way around.
BUY IT!" Relax with this book when on Holiday in Ireland. It would be so handy when you Home Exchange a Holiday Property in Ireland.

"This book arrived so quickly (the day after i ordered it!) that i could hardly believe it. It was wrapped and packed fantastically and therefore reached me in perfect condition. The seller was also extremely helpful and i would reccomend any one to buy from them. fab!******" Before Home exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Ireland, I would read this book.

"We only went on a day trip to Dublin, so took this as a rough guide. It is usefull for opening times, and prices, which we found to be correct, or close enough when we visted. We also found the street maps very useful. Its a nice well written little book, but doesnt give you a great deal of information on everything. Still good to keep as a handy reference, or may be better if you are visiting for a longer time.
I found the taxi drivers to be very friendly and helpful, so you might be better asking them!!!" Before Home exchanging a Vacation Property in Ireland, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Ireland.

Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"This is an outstanding guide in a brilliant series; I only wish I'd found it before I'd wasted my money on the Rough Guides and Lonely Planet books. It's so dense with information and it's all so well-presented that it's an entertaining read even if you're just staying at home. All the practical information is there, in detail -- from general information to the little quirks and inconveniences that could mean the difference between feeling uncomfortable and feeling like you're on vacation. I'll never go anywhere again without the accompanying Eyewitness Travel Guide.

Of course, visit the tourist centers for the most up-to-date maps, phone numbers, and such. But for everything else, travel with confidence that you've got an encyclopedia of info that fits in your pocket." A wealth of information about Ireland, a great book if you are thinking about Home exchanging a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Ireland.

"Our family moved to Germany almost 2 years ago. Before coming here I purchased the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Germany (also highly recommended). Since then, I have tried a few other books to use during our European travels. NONE of them come close to Eyewitness books. These travel guides are easy to use. They have awesome pictures. I am one who likes to look at pictures to see what is interesting and then read the info. so the pictures are a huge help. The guide for Ireland is just as great as I had expected it to be. The guide is broken into sections and regions. We did purchase a map in addition but for over-all ease and basic facts, the DK books are tops! I will always look to the Eyewitness books first when considering travel destinations." This book has fantastic information on Ireland, well worth reading if you Home exchanging a Vacation Apartment in Ireland.

"I was born and educated in Ireland and travel back to the old sod every couple of years. I have studied just about every travel guide to Ireland since I am more a tourist than a native; after 30 years in the good old U.S. The eyewitness guide is by far the best" Before Home exchanging a Vacation Villa in Ireland, I would read this book while in Ireland.

"I've been to Ireland 3 times, and this book was extremely enlightening. If you intend to travel there, bring this book along. It describes many points of interest, of all kinds (touristy, like Blarney Castle; or off the beaten path, like Galarus Oratory), and it reviews hotels in a handy table. Colorful and insightful. When we go to Ireland we cover 1200 miles by rental car in 8 days. We design our own itinerary before-hand. This book was very good for preplanning and to bring along for the ride. It's lightweight and has a small shape so it fits into any daypack or glove compartment. You could use this book and a very good map (Michelin's road map is best) to see AND appreciate Ireland on a great vacation. Ireland travel books vary greatly on their accuracy (opening hours and directions of sights, for example), but this book was very accurate. Going on vacation to Ireland is fun and an adventure, bring this book along." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Ireland. It would be so usefull when you Home Exchange a Vacation Apartment in Ireland.

"On the plus side, the Eyewitness guide is easy to read and gives you a more accurate idea of what to expect at the various attractions across Ireland, and has a decent section on Northern Ireland, which is often noticeably lacking in many other guides. However, it is VERY limited in terms of its listings of lodgings, restaurants and pubs. I bought the guide while living in my husband's native Northern Ireland on the recommendation of a friend, but found I had to continually refer to other guide books to find hotels, B&B and restaurants that normal people (those of us with incomes under $100,000/year) can afford. Also, the listing of hotels, etc., at the back of the book is rather frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth many times to determine if there's an accommodation, etc. near where you want to travel. Basically, it's a good companion guide, but not very effective on its own." Before Home exchanging a Holiday Cottage in Ireland, I would read this book while in Ireland.

"Just returned from a trip to Ireland using this book and most of the information was seriously out-of-date. Tourist offices there actually know that the bad information you received is from this book. Also, pretty sketchy on the details. Stick to the Internet for better info." Relax with this book when on Vocation or Holiday in Ireland. It would be so handy when you Home Exchange a Vocation or Holiday House in Ireland.

"There's a new edition of this great guide available, as of March 1999. This is definitely the one to go for." www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Villa to Home Exchange in Ireland.

"No guidebook is perfect, but this one is very good, packing an amazing amount of information, and 900 paages into a 1" (2 1/2 cm) thick softback.

It scores well against its two main rivals: Lonely Planet Ireland and Lets Go Ireland. Although they have new 2004 Editions this one is not far behind in the up to date stakes. While it's layout may not be so imediatley appealing it's great strength is the depth of it's coverage. Especially in two areas:

This guide has the best background sections of any budget travel guidebook, with good information on everything from Irish History to Irish music. There are also excellent descriptive sections on the main tourist sites, with enough information to enable you to give yourself a tour of them and save on buying the site guidebook when you get to them." This book has wonderfull information about Ireland. So take it with you when you Home Exchange a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Ireland.

"Can a travel guide get any better? I think not. While no book can possibly cover everything of interest to everyone LP certainly hits more than just the highlights. It's worth reading even if you aren't planning a trip." A wealth of information about Ireland, a great book if you are thinking about Home exchanging a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Ireland.

"This book will be helpful if you already know where you want to go and what you want to do - but when I looked in the index for hostels and hiking - there was no mention. It's not very good if you are at the beginning of your planning as there is not much of a high-level overview (ie: what to bring, when to go, options on where to stay, etc...). I will probably have to get an additional book for the basics." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Ireland. It would be so usefull when you Home Exchange a Holiday Apartment in Ireland.

"This guide to Ireland looks at the country in fine detail and provides all the information you possibly need for your trip. There are sections on eating out, accomodation, and places of interest. Even the smallest of towns seems to be included with information on B&B's and prices. Places that are not worth seeing are also included, just so you don't end up wasting your time. I also found the history and general sections on Ireland very interesting. This is a wonderful read containing detailed maps and information." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Ireland. It would be so usefull when you Home Exchange a Holiday Cottage in Ireland.

"This guide is packed cover to cover with information in an easy to access style. Best of all are the many town maps which mean that the location of everything, from the Post Office, to the Banks, to the Bars and Accomodation is clearly laid out before you. The county by county coverage is pretty comprehensive, but with a few ommisions of smaller places that could have been included.

Since the last edition the guide has become fully web friendly, with website and email addresses included wherever possible.

As for the comprehensive nature of entires and how up to date they are, I am a frequent user of hostel accomodation in Ireland, so I can best judge by that. Coverage is in general good, but can be a few years out of date in some places. Also the choices of places in some major destinations is a bit idiosyncratic.

Overall however, an excellent guidebook that gives you the information you need when you need it." www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Property to Home Exchange in Ireland.

McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery in Ireland (A Lir Book) (Book)

Customer Rating:
The premise of Pete McCarthy's first book, McCarthy's Bar, is that you should never pass up the opportunity of having a drink in a bar that shares your name. There is clearly more to this plan than the obvious publicity stunt, since it could work with books as well--try reading Cormac McCarthy after reading this hilarious, informed and intelligent book, and you may well be tempted to buy books by every other McCarthy around.

Born in Warrington, Pete McCarthy decides to go back to rural Ireland, to rediscover his Irishness. The feeling that you have heard this sort of thing all before doesn't last for long. There is a serious writer struggling to make himself heard above the many excellent jokes and this is what makes McCarthy's book so distinctive. Although he can crack Brysonesque quips with the best of them ("I've often wondered how businessmen used to cope before [mobile phones] were invented. How did they tell their wives they were on the train?"), and take us through hilarious and largely drunken set-pieces, McCarthy is equally at home discussing Celtic standing stones and the potato famine.

The resulting book is a wonderful debut. By the end, we, too, would like to move to Ireland. You sense that McCarthy has such a genuine feeling for Ireland, Irishness and Irish history that he can only temper his writing with side-splitting humour. In this way, his first book successfully embodies much of what it is to be Irish. --Toby Green
Reviews:

"McCarthy's Bar was recommended by a friend who is very British. Unfortunately, and somebody please tell him, so is Pete McCarthy. I never read an author who seemed as pathetically desperate to be Irish. Expecting good humor, interesting tales, and at the least well written prose, I was dissappointed to discover in the pages of this book perhaps the worst travel prose I have ever come across. It is completely lacking in depth, humor (it is touted as a humorous peice), insight, or even decent observation. It is one of the worst books I have read in years. Pete McCarthy, congrats on landing a book deal, as you certainly did not deserve it. Sorry Pete, spendng summers there as a kid makes you about as Irish as the typical fat American tourist. Not at all." This book has fantastic information on Ireland, well worth reading if you Home exchanging a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Ireland.

"This is certainly one of the best travel narratives to come around in a long time. Mr. McCarthy is one of the few authors I've read recently who isn't ashamed to admit his love for food and drink. He also has a much higher tolerance for people than
other writers such as Paul Theroux, and Bill Bryson, as well as
a sense of humor sadly lacking in many travel related books.
Perhaps his cynicism has been mellowed by his intake of stout. Whatever the reason, this book will provide you with a humorous glance at travel, no matter whether you are Irish or not." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday Apartment to Home Exchange in Ireland.

"As soon as I finished the book, I turned back to the beginning to start again, and take in all the bits that I missed the first time in my rush to keep turning the pages and enjoy it all. Having been brought up in England of Irish parents, I felt like I was reading exactly how I felt about this wonderful country, and re-living my own memories of childhood holidays, Irish characters, and just the charm of this country that seems almost impossible to put into words. If you've ever visited Ireland you will love this book - and if you haven't it will make you want to go. I hope he writes more - he's a natural at recounting real life, characters, and the landscape of Ireland, and also at letting you inside his mind and his memories.
I'd never lend my copy out - I want it on my bookshelf! - but I'd urge anyone to read it. You will really enjoy it." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Ireland. It would be so usefull when you Home Exchange a Holiday House in Ireland.

Britain BC: Life in Britain and Ireland Before the Romans (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"Pryor has combined his own expertise from the archaeological field with a thorough understnading of the work of fellow archaeologists, (both in the UK and abroad), to present a vibrant, fluid and exceptionally informative look at life before Roman Britain.

Where Pryor makes some "judgement calls", he is open and honest about how much evidence there is and some different ways of understanding it. He presents a variety of views.

What you end up with a very comprehensive view of prehistoric life in Britain that does not get lost in reams of dry information. Pryor writes with an obvious passion for the topic, and that enthusiasm comes out in the writing.

It is basically a great book, with loads of information. I learned heaps from it!" A wealth of information about Ireland, a great book if you are thinking about Home exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in Ireland.

"No real evidence of the Romans being in Ireland. There may be a few scattered artifacts that imply there was trading but no hard evidence of any colonisation or settling. A gross genralisation of something that is still under investigation. read this with an open mind." Before Home exchanging a Vacation Property in Ireland, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Ireland.

"Pryor writes with authority yet without arrogance and so describes pre Roman Britian as a story still being told with more yet to learn. This is a great book that helps to start undoing the blinkers of the last few hundred years of our British culture which chose to hide us from our origins and focus unfairly on Roman and post Roman Britian considering anythone BC was more or less a savage. There is much more of our history out there than was told in our ignorant christian / victorian cultured schools and this book helps us all realise our full historical story." Before Home exchanging a Vacation House in Ireland, I would read this book while in Ireland.
