It's so dense with information and it's all so well-presented that it's an entertaining read even if you're just staying at home. "Our family moved to Germany almost 2 years ago. Before coming here I purchased the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Germany (also highly recommended). Since then, I have tried a few other books to use during our European travels. NONE of them come close to Eyewitness books. These travel guides are easy to use. They have awesome pictures. I am one who likes to look at pictures to see what is interesting and then read the info. so the pictures are a huge help. The guide for Ireland is just as great as I had expected it to be. The guide is broken into sections and regions. We did purchase a map in addition but for over-all ease and basic facts, the DK books are tops! I will always look to the Eyewitness books first when considering travel destinations." "I've been to Ireland 3 times, and this book was extremely enlightening. If you intend to travel there, bring this book along. It describes many points of interest, of all kinds (touristy, like Blarney Castle; or off the beaten path, like Galarus Oratory), and it reviews hotels in a handy table. Colorful and insightful. When we go to Ireland we cover 1200 miles by rental car in 8 days. We design our own itinerary before-hand. This book was very good for preplanning and to bring along for the ride. It's lightweight and has a small shape so it fits into any daypack or glove compartment. You could use this book and a very good map (Michelin's road map is best) to see AND appreciate Ireland on a great vacation. Ireland travel books vary greatly on their accuracy (opening hours and directions of sights, for example), but this book was very accurate. "On the plus side, the Eyewitness guide is easy to read and gives you a more accurate idea of what to expect at the various attractions across Ireland, and has a decent section on Northern Ireland, which is often noticeably lacking in many other guides. However, it is VERY limited in terms of its listings of lodgings, restaurants and pubs. I bought the guide while living in my husband's native Northern Ireland on the recommendation of a friend, but found I had to continually refer to other guide books to find hotels, B&B and restaurants that normal people (those of us with incomes under $100,000/year) can afford. Also, the listing of hotels, etc., at the back of the book is rather frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth many times to determine if there's an accommodation, etc. near where you want to travel. "This guide to Ireland looks at the country in fine detail and provides all the information you possibly need for your trip. There are sections on eating out, accomodation, and places of interest. Even the smallest of towns seems to be included with information on B&B's and prices. Places that are not worth seeing are also included, just so you don't end up wasting your time. "This guide is packed cover to cover with information in an easy to access style. Best of all are the many town maps which mean that the location of everything, from the Post Office, to the Banks, to the Bars and Accomodation is clearly laid out before you. The county by county coverage is pretty comprehensive, but with a few ommisions of smaller places that could have been included.

Since the last edition the guide has become fully web friendly, with website and email addresses included wherever possible.

As for the comprehensive nature of entires and how up to date they are, I am a frequent user of hostel accomodation in Ireland, so I can best judge by that. Coverage is in general good, but can be a few years out of date in some places. Also the choices of places in some major destinations is a bit idiosyncratic.

The premise of Pete McCarthy's first book, McCarthy's Bar, is that you should never pass up the opportunity of having a drink in a bar that shares your name. There is clearly more to this plan than the obvious publicity stunt, since it could work with books as well--try reading Cormac McCarthy after reading this hilarious, informed and intelligent book, and you may well be tempted to buy books by every other McCarthy around.

Born in Warrington, Pete McCarthy decides to go back to rural Ireland, to rediscover his Irishness. The feeling that you have heard this sort of thing all before doesn't last for long. There is a serious writer struggling to make himself heard above the many excellent jokes and this is what makes McCarthy's book so distinctive. Although he can crack Brysonesque quips with the best of them ("I've often wondered how businessmen used to cope before [mobile phones] were invented. How did they tell their wives they were on the train?"), and take us through hilarious and largely drunken set-pieces, McCarthy is equally at home discussing Celtic standing stones and the potato famine.

The resulting book is a wonderful debut. By the end, we, too, would like to move to Ireland. You sense that McCarthy has such a genuine feeling for Ireland, Irishness and Irish history that he can only temper his writing with side-splitting humour. In this way, his first book successfully embodies much of what it is to be Irish. --Toby Green

"McCarthy's Bar was recommended by a friend who is very British. Unfortunately, and somebody please tell him, so is Pete McCarthy. I never read an author who seemed as pathetically desperate to be Irish. Expecting good humor, interesting tales, and at the least well written prose, I was dissappointed to discover in the pages of this book perhaps the worst travel prose I have ever come across. It is completely lacking in depth, humor (it is touted as a humorous peice), insight, or even decent observation. It is one of the worst books I have read in years. Pete McCarthy, congrats on landing a book deal, as you certainly did not deserve it. Sorry Pete, spendng summers there as a kid makes you about as Irish as the typical fat American tourist.
