City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"A really wonderful book about the city of Delhi. Dalrymple and his wife go to spend a year living in Delhi (how did they afford this?), and he uses this arrangement as a way of chronicling the present day status of the city and delving deep into its history. He's done a very nice job of moving back and forth between present and past, managing to keep all his meetings and interviews with various experts quite interesting. The only part which lost my interest was an extended look into Sufi mysticism, but I just skimmed it and moved along. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in India, and especially to anyone planning a trip to Delhi." Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Casa in India, I would read this book while in India.

"dalrymple is simply one of the best travelogue writers today as he lives, breathes, imbibes the culture & history of the places he travels to. in this book, he takes you to the delhi (india) of old, a once beautiful and cultured city and revisits the historical, political and cultural forces that shaped it. dalrymple does all this with a keen eye and a sympathetic ear for the inhabitants of the new delhi. he shows an unusual understanding for the people who once lived there and who live there now, their aspirations & fears. even more remarkable is the fact that, the empathy dalrymple feels comes through while he successfully avoids sounding patronizing in his depiction of old & new delhi. all in all a fabulous and very enjoyable travelogue, historical account and sympathetic tale from a man who truly belongs without having been born or raised there....." Before exchanging a Holiday Casa in India, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in India.

"This is one of my favourite books - I read it before I went to Delhi and then forgot to take it with me so I had to try to remember things in it. I think I failed miserably but I still grew to love Delhi and WD is now my favourite author _ i can't wait for White Moghuls. From the Holy Mountain is my next favourite WD book. I love the way he knows so much about the subject but doesn't overwhelm you with his knowledge." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Apartment to Exchange in India.

"You hardly realise you are reading a history book, mingled with the story of his yeear in India. It was a bit hard work, something of a modern Morehouse" Before exchanging a Holiday Property in India, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in India.

The Rough Guide to Nepal (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"I just returned from Nepal using this guide. The book was very well-written with lots of practical advice-- everything from how to book an airline to what kind of diahrrea you may have picked up. Very accurate information re. hotels, modes of transportation, etc. Useful vocabulary list." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in India. It would be so usefull when you Exchange a Holiday Cottage in India.

"This book has given me comfort and a wealth of information about what I would like to do and see in Nepal. Having a well planned trip in advance is smart and this book will probably tell you everything you need to know about anything, and more. Food, health issues, places to stay, sights, special points, etc. Definitely worth the investment." www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Holiday House to Exchange in India.

"great guidebook. Describes in detail the good, the bad and the ugly of Nepal. The language section was extremely useful. A few hours spent learning some useful greetings and phrases will pay off tenfold upon arrival in Nepal. Being able to bargain or ask for directions in the native language is a lot of fun and much appreciated, especially since most travellers do not take the time to learn anything more than "Namaste."" A wealth of information about India, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in India.

"The best thing about this book is its vast coverage; especially those places off the beaten track. It has a lot of practical information and despite being 2 years old now, it was still fairly accurate. Other travel books attempt to be encyclopedic about Nepal,... documenting everything without prioritizing the places that people actually do visit. David's book goes into a lot of detail about places of interest, both historical and practical info. For example, the book had an excellent section on Chitwan national park. In fact, on our recent trip it saved us from getting a guide. I thoroughly recommend this book. The author even keeps a website to update the readers. Great." A wealth of information about India, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in India.

"This book is great for all round use.
However, i would not reccomend itfor anyone
going trekking. there are many other booksspecifically
aimed at trekking which have much more detail than thisone.
But they will not tell you about any other part of thecountry
outside of Khumbu or the Annapurna's" This book has great information about India. So take it with you when you Exchange a Vacation Cottage in India.

Goa (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

"This little book is probably the best of it's kind and is invaluable for the budget travellor. It contains accurate descriptions of accomodation and restaurants in different price ranges. My only comment is that the writer is a little harsh on Calangute, yes it's a busy, bustling tourist town - but I didn't see 'heaps of garbage' and the town starting to 'stew in it's juices'. However generally I loved this little book, the photos were great and I would have been lost without it!" Before exchanging a Vacation Villa in India, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in India.

"This was the only book we used while travelling Goa. Tourists with other guides found that they just did not have enough detail to make the most out of a holiday. The authors had focused on what was important, especially in a region where you never take anything for granted. Eating out in India conjours up all sorts of images even to the well travelled, but the rough guide really did suggest the safest, cleanest and tastiest of shacks and restruants to try. It helped us adapt to and deal with the unfamilier culture that surrounded us. We found everything worth seeing, even when it required constant referal to the guide for directions. This book is a must, and made a real difference to our stay." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Cottage to Exchange in India.

"I found the guide a functional reference book of Goa, India. Eventhough the province is quite small the book covered all areas in reasonable detail. If you are looking for a full detailed directory of services with Goa, then this book lacks the depth you would be looking for. I found that where the guide identified an ATM machine there was in fact 3, or where there was 1 internet shop, there was in fact 5. Saying that, it does cover everthing a traveller may require, however not in the detail it could of. In the defensive of the author, travelling is all about discovery, which this book encourages you to do. The section covering Old Goa was excellent, covering the history of the churches and cathredrals in great detail." Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Villa in India, I would read this book while in India.

"I studied the guide before our holiday but read it from cover to cover whilst we were there. We really would have been lost without it, in fact there were tears and tantrums when I thought I had left it in a bar ! The reviews of the restaurants were extremely accurate and from the guide we discovered many of the Goa's beautiful restaurants which we would never have found otherwise. The reviews on temples was also extremely useful and explained in great detail what you would find around the temple areas and also inside the temples.
We found that even though we were not in Goa as 'backpackers', it still covered many more superior places and not just the beach huts bars (that are still wonderful!)
The only thing I would disagree with would be the review about the famous Anjuna Fleamarket - I personally thought it was fantastic and great fun bartering with all the locals there. All in all, I personally wouldn't travel to Goa without it." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Villa to Exchange in India.

Lonely Planet Nepal (Travel Guide) (Book)

"It's undoubtely a very good guide, with lots of informations, but it only covers the southern part of Nepal, and contains no informartion about the Himalayan region (for example, cities such as Namche Bazaar and Lo Manthang are not covered)." Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation Villa in India, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in India.

"If you're used to Lonely Planet guide, this is another of their top of the line guides. Same style and layout as all the others. I've used both this and older editions and they've all been as acurate as you'd expect from a guide book. It's well worth getting a newer edition if you have an old one, they've updated quite a lot and added a lot more info." This book has best information on India, well worth reading if you exchanging a Alternative Holiday Apartment in India.

"One of Lonely Planets best guidebooks and definetely the best one for Nepal. As always Lonely Planet got it all covered, accomodation, things to see and do, food and travelling. Very accurate and well written with lots of facts. Also contains useful advices and information on the culture, Gods, religions, etc. I have used it on journeys throughout Nepal and you can really tell that the authors knows what they are talking about and have set their foot on the places they are writing about." Before exchanging a Vacation Cottage in India, I would read this book while in India.

Lonely Planet India (Travel Guide) (Book)

"Anyone planning a trip to India would be wise to take this book along. Start reading it a couple months before the trip (it's a thick book) and take it with you everywhere you go in India. I promise, any question you have, it will answer. Anytime I needed some information on language, customs, curiosities, cuisine, health issues, or even what time the local museum opens (I visited the Orissa State Museum in Bhubaneshwar), I found the info I needed. I like to refer back to it every now and then to dazzle my Indian friends with my knowledge of India and her culture (sometimes I even know more than they do!)
And I learned it all from this book. This is the 9th edition; in my opinion the 10th edition has a prettier picture on the cover. But the info in this one is reliable and insightful." Before exchanging a Vacation Villa in India, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in India.

"This book is certainly NOT essential. I liked its maps and some of its practical tips; but I hated much more. Sometimes you know a contributor was having a bad day (so a blameless local restaurant is savaged for "abysmally slow service"); sometimes the house politics preclude any genuine sense of inquiry (so the East India Company is "notorious"); too often, an important town is dismissed or not mentioned (eg Mirzapur, UP); sometimes the information is just wrong (so the railway booking office in Patna, Bihar is described as hopeless: there's a perfectly decent computerised office upstairs, had you bothered to ask). Worst of all is the trivialising know-everything tone that hides profound ignorance. This book encourages self-important, me-me-me "travel". There are other books, like Footprint, with a different take on this wonderful and complicated country." This book has wonderfull information on India, well worth reading if you exchanging a Holiday Apartment in India.

"You can navigate your way around India with it, I have done, but be aware that you could well just be following a very worn furrow. You will find yourself visiting places, eating in places and trying the 'special curd' that many other travellers have done before you. But it is still so handy to help you find bus and train offices, food and places to stay, I would have been lost without it and its maps. You will need this book, don't even think of going without it!" Before exchanging a Vacation House in India, I would read this book.

The Heart of India (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"This book is very contextual but thoroughly enjoyable. However if readers visualise what they read, then this book will appeal either to those Indians, who come from the Hindi heartland in India and are familiar with gifted writers such as Munshi Premchand or to those westerners, who dont just touch the surface of the diversity in India - in short, people like Mark Tully or even Annie Besant.

The stories bear the simplicity and lucidity that characterised Munshi Prem Chand, who the Indian Press once 'accused' Mark Tully of aspiring to be like. They bring out the flavour and the pathos of Uttar Pradesh in a way rarely seen in literature written in the English language.

I recommend this book highly but not to those whose only experience of India is a trip to Goa or chicken tikka masala!" This book has supper information on India, well worth reading if you exchanging a Holiday Villa in India.

"For anyone interested in India during the period before 1990, this is a very interesting read. Like most of Tully's books, it is a series of essays on the pressing subjects in India. Highly recommended." A wealth of information about India, a great book if you are thinking about exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in India.

"Unlike "No Full Stops", this book is not a collection of feature-length reports about India. Instead, the journalist Tully tries his hand at becoming the writer Tully, with very limited success. He claims that each story "could have happened in this way", which may be true, but I find them very cliched, and badly written -- a long, atmospheric introduction followed by unbelievable twists towards a quick end, mostly steeped in bloodshed.

Unfortunately, not a patch on "No Full Stops"." If you are thinking about exchanging a Alternative Vacation Apartments in India, I would buy this book to take with you while in India.

India (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"You're either a Rough Guide person or a Lonely Planet person - I go for Rough Guides. The layout makes the information easy to find and absorb - and the information is comprehensive enough for anyone to use. Visit the most obscure little village, it'll probably be in here, along with vital information on how to behave so you don't offend local people, how to buy stuff and how to get around and basically enjoy yourself.

If you just want to fnid out more about India, whether it's geography, it's culture or its history, this book has the lot.

The only drawback is the size - I found it a little heavy to sit unnoticed in the rucksack - but there isn't much of a way round that without compromising the ability for it to stay in one peice throughout weeks on months of use." This book has wonderfull information about India. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Property in India.

"There was a time - say, the late 80s - when those of us who travelled to India had a choice between the Lonely Planet guide and ...the Lonely Planet guide. The LP still profit from being the first foot in the door, still sell themselves as the indispensable guide to India.

But this is no longer true. And the competition isn't just Rough Guide either - to my mind the Footprint guide by Bradnock & Bradnock (for once, bona fide experts rather than just kids with more miles than you and me) is far superior to either of these, and the one book worth carrying to India. (E.g. it is terse on restaurants and hotels - basic info and v. short description of what it's like, unlike the LP, which goes on and on about them.)

The LP, to my mind, is a good second choice, as it has quite a bit of practical detail for the major destinations; but it can't hold a candle to the Footprint handbook in terms of depth and breadth of coverage - too many interesting places just aren't covered." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Apartment to Exchange in India.
