| Brazil: Amazon and Pantanal (Ecotravellers' Wildlife Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"This book attempts to cover the whole gamut of wildlife for the Amazon basin and Pananal. It can't do it; no book can. It did make an admirable attempt and as such is a great book for the tourist traveling to the area. On a recent trip north of Manaus, it covered 98% of the bird life. It is concise enough that the occaisional bird wathcer will be able to identify most birds. It is not quite as adequate for other species- fish are very superficial, as are reptiles. I would like to see these expanded. This is a terrific guide for the tourist- concise, adequately complete, and easy to use." This book has best information about Brazil. So take it with you when you Exchange a Vocation or Holiday House in Brazil. "This book is an academic treatise rather than a field guide. If you are a specialist wanting more knowledge, it may well be the book for you. What it is not is a pocket field guide for the general traveller visiting Brazil." This book has fantastic information about Brazil. So take it with you when you Exchange a Alternative Vacation Property in Brazil. |

| Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life (Book)Customer Rating: Futebol is sub-titled "The Brazilian Way of Life", and if any sport can truly be deemed to be such a thing for any country on the planet, then surely the sport must be football, and the country Brazil. Alex Bellos's study of football in Brazil, its history, its players, supporters and legends, works from the standpoint that Brazilian football is one the modern wonders of the world, "the beautiful game" being an art form in itself and a universally recognised trademark and brand. From such a view, he is able to entertain the reader not only with stories about great players and matches well known by the followers of world football, but also about the unique position of the game in the world's fifth largest country. Thus featured here are not only tales of Garrincha, Socrates and Ronaldo, of Flamengo and Fluminense, but also of football amongst the Indians of the Amazon, Brazilian footballers in the Faroe Islands and the story of the design (and designer) of the famous golden yellow Brazilian shirt, perhaps the most instantly recognisable icon in football anywhere. Where other books investigating the footballing culture of one country might have a more straightforward story to tell, Bellos uses this more eclectic approach. While the subjects of his observations are linked by the common threads of football and Brazil, he still captures magnificently the beauty, passion and the occasional absurdity of the world game in the world's number one footballing nation. --Trevor Crowe Reviews:
"This is an outstanding book about the Brazilian soccer and culture. As Brazilian and top soccer fan, I can say that the book is rich in details and realistic information that few Brazilians know. It is clear that Alex did extensive, diligent, and almost Herculean researches all over this continental size country. The author clearly described the history of Brazilian soccer, our passion for soccer, idols, martyrs, the bad-guys, the culture behind soccer, memorable moments, episodes we are ashamed, the corruption, and justice in this sport. The superior English sense of humor makes this book a very relaxing and entertaining reading. This book should be translated to Portuguese. It is top reference in any Brazilian soccer fan library. It really worth the reading." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Villa to Exchange in Brazil. "I expected an exciting, informative book full of interesting anecdotes, but was disappointed. The beginning is simply boring, and the end is a superficial criticism of the current state of corruption in Brazilian football. The only chapter I found entertaining was on the life of Garrincha." Before exchanging a Alternative Vacation Property in Brazil, I would read this book while in Brazil. "'Futebol' by Alex Bellos, is an amazing book detailing the nature of brazilian fooball, and it's effect upon the entire nation, a world full of passion and corruption. Bellos shows the passion for football which Brazilians have, their love of 'jogo bonito'. Chronicling events such as Brazil's fateful 1950 world cup loss to Uruguay and the rise of players such as Garincha, who managed to win the hearts of all, more loved than Pele. This is a must for anyone interested in the passion which football can produce, and anyone who has ever been enchanted by the beauty which the Brazilians used to produce (pre '82). Plus the cover artwork makes the book worth the purchase." Before exchanging a Alternative Holiday Casa in Brazil, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Brazil. "A wonderful annecdotal, factfile of Brazilian life and how it's seemingly totally entwined with football. Football is life to Brazilians and they take the playing of the game to extremes of all kinds! The wonderful telling of beautiful but tragic tales of players such as Garrincha and Barbosa and the "Fateful Final" of the 1950 World Cup where the whole of Brazil seemingly mourned the defeat against Uruguay. Terrific book and a real eye opener on Brazilian culture and life..." Before exchanging a Vacation Villa in Brazil, I would read this book. |

| Lonely Planet: Brazilian Phrasebook (Phrasebooks) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Don't even think about trying to survive in Brasil on this book. While other LP language guides (I have used their guides to Latin American Spanish, Mongolian, and Russian) are thorough, and provide lots of conversational phrases to get you into and out of almost any key travel situation, this one is woefully lacking in any aspect. Not enough vocabularly, not enough questions, not enough areas. After three weeks in Brasil, I managed to successfully use this book twice. It's cheap but it's not worth the purchase price." Before exchanging a Holiday Villa in Brazil, I would read this book while in Brazil. "You don't want grammar in a phrase book! But this one is full of it. Nouns, adjectives, definite articles, indefinite articles, pronouns, subjects, objects, regular verbs, irregular verbs, double-stemmed verbs, you-name-it verbs. If I wanted a grammar, I would have bought one. You don't want grammar lessons in a phrase book. I find this amount of grammar in a phrase book quite out of place." This book has best information on Brazil, well worth reading if you exchanging a Vacation Villa in Brazil. "Bought this book for my mother in law to take to Rio with her. She is studying portugease at present but it nervous to use it in sentences and out of the classroom, without her dictionery. Needless to say short conversations can take an age when you have to look up each word. I hope this book will give her the confidence she needs to communicate when travelling alone in Brazil - Very handy!!" www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Apartment to Exchange in Brazil. |
