"I agree with the earlier reviewers this guide is way out of date, prices are not even close, and places that no longer exsist. This might have been a good guide a few years ago but I would not rely on it today!" This book has fantastic information on Belize, well worth reading if you exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Property in Belize.

"If you are familiar with the Lonley Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the travler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded travler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" fun book!" Before exchanging a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Belize, I would read this book while in Belize.

"It was worth having both the Guatemala Lonely Planet Book and the Rough Guide as reference as both covered different points. The Lonely Plant was excellent for accomadation and travel and the Rough Guide was great for information on a particular place. It was great having the Guatemala Lonely Plant book which also covered Yucatan and Belsize which was ideal for our trip. Well done Lonely Planet on a wonderful guide to such an interesting part of Central America. Worth it!!" Before exchanging a Vacation House in Belize, I would read this book while in Belize.

"We used this and while, yes, last year's hurricane did make some of the information less relevant, this was still the most up-to-date guide in our party. I particularly enjoyed the cultural focus, which is really why I travel, anyway.

"This guide is an invaluable reference for anyone visiting Belize. It covers the majority of the country's varied attractions with the usual Lonely Planet rigour. There are detailed and useful descriptions of the many aspects of Belize and Belizean life that are very helpful in understanding this unusual country.

Where the book lets itself down though, is that it tends to sick to a matter-of-fact approach and does not manage to portray the country with the same passion and enthasism that is so characteristic of the Belizean people.

"The book is an excellent introduction to the Mayan civilisation and the area that they inhabited. The book provides a sizeable amount of accurate and helpful information on all aspects relevant to the independent traveller. It has very good information on getting to and from each destination and accurate descriptions of places to stay. The text is enjoyable to read, well set out, contains some funny anecdotes and is not too bulky. The book is comparable to "Mexico and Central America" from the Footprint series. The Footprint book is bigger and would suit people travelling the whole of mexico, not just the south. Both books are easy to read but "The Maya World" is set out better as the text is less cramped. "was sad to have this guide stolen on a bus in mexico. one of the best guide book i have used. the insight to mayan culture glyphs ect could be increased as it leaves you hungry for information, but this is obviously a plus point in some ways as well.
worst point is for eating out, and is definately the most innacurate part of the book, many restaurants having gone long before or apparently having never existed.

"This book has what Peterson's "Mexican Birds" lacks: good colour pictures of (nearly) all birds of Mexico and adjacent areas and their Spanish names. However, the presentation of the pictures is a mishmash. The descriptions of the birds are not detailed but very short. It is a pity that there is no information about the behaviour of the birds, often very important for identification." Before exchanging a Holiday Villa in Belize, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Belize.

"To be sure, this field guide is better than having no field guide. If birds posed for observation, it would be a great field guide. But for the real world this guide is disorganized in text and illustrations beyond excuse. I'm not sure this is the author's fault. It may be due to the publisher cutting costs. Still, no excuse. A birder will pay a premium for a great field guide. Illustrations are jammed together on each plate with no regard to proportionate size, or to other birds on that plate. For example, kingfishers are intermixed with trogons, motmots, swallows and woodpeckers on 3 separate plates. The amazon kingfisher is on one plate; the similar green kingfisher is 2 plates later. Quick comparison is impossible. Seven trogons are together on one plate, but the elegant trogon is 2 plates later. Some woodpeckers are on each of plates 20, 21 & 22; the imperial woodpecker is on plate 45. First I cried, then I laughed." "I took this guide to Oaxaca to carry in the field, as the Howell guide is so heavy. I almost threw it over the cliff at Monte Alban. It will help you remember which euphonia is which, but for anything more subtly marked it is almost no help at all. Furthermore, there are no range maps, no details on alternate plumages, little to no information on vocalizations. I would have done better to bring the old Peterson guide, even though it is out of date." "This field guide will enable you to see paintings of all of the birds that occur in the area. It also discusses (briefly) each bird. The paintings are excellent and the copy is quick and to the point. To pick at nits, though, the arrangement of the paintings is confusing. Not all birds in a specific family are illustrated on the same plate, and some are found pages away from the rest of their family. The logic seems to be that if the bird is found regularly in northern North America (the elegant trogon, for example) its picture does not need to run with the rest of its relatives. Close study of the guide can overcome this problem, however, making it an easy, economical way to pack the information of other guides into the field." This book has best information about Belize.
