The suggestion to purchase this book was found on Polynesianislands.com Tahiti forum with many similar recommendations from long time Tahiti travelers.
According to our travel agent, this book could almost have been the only thing to pack prior to our trip with the children, great advice and suggestions that helped us to keep within our family budget and maximize the fun. We also loved the restaurant suggestions on Moorea like, Le Bateau restaurant or the children's favorite, the Aito restaurant near the Sheraton.
This book stays on my desk in the office as to keep our promise to return and try the Fare Hamara which we could only see from the road, as it appears to be the true flavor of life on Moorea by Bali Hai! This book is must for any traveler to read before and after visiting Tahiti and her islands!

The late Bruce Chatwin carved out a literary career as unique as any writer's in this century: his books included In Patagonia, a fabulist travel narrative, The Viceroy of Ouidah, a mock-historical tale of a Brazilian slave-trader in 19th century Africa, and The Songlines, his beautiful, elegiac, comic account of following the invisible pathways traced by the Australian aborigines. Chatwin was nothing if not erudite, and the vast, eclectic body of literature that underlies this tale of trekking across the outback gives it a resonance found in few other recent travel books. A poignancy, as well, since Chatwin's untimely death made The Songlines one of his last books.

"The Songlines is unfortunately two books in one and they do not really gel. Each separately would of received more stars. It starts quite well as a narrative of his time in Alice Springs and the aboriginal culture he explored. This is very readable and quite educational (and would of scored 4 -5 stars). Unfortunely at about halfway through books he starts putting in little quotes in sequence often for 20 - 30 pages which interupts the story line of the other 'book'. He really should of pulled the quotes out and built them into a second novel. "All in all the book was alright, not superb but alright. I found the notes a bit tedious but quite interesting but what intrigued me the most was Bruce Chatwin's view of women throughout the book. While I was reading certain descriptions of women surprised me, if not shocked me. They didn't seem to fit with the 'beauty' in the writing of the rest of the novel. They seemed rather harsh, unnecessary and even a bit vulgar. It wasn't until someone pointed out to me that the author was infact homosexual that the reason became clear, however, I think it sad that the author felt he had to cover this part of him up even to the extent where he overcompensated for a male's view of women through his writing. "Having recently returned from the Cook Islands, I cannot highly recommend this book. While the history and culture sections are interesting, the lodging and shopping/restaurants sections leave a lot to be desired. Most of the businesses mentioned have either gone out of business or changed hands. This is especially true on Aitutaki, where only one of the businesses recommended was still in its present form! As another reader recommended, the book does not sufficiently cover home rentals which are a great way to stay on these islands for a reasonable amount (and most can be viewed and reserved on the internet!). David Stanley's Moon Handbooks South Pacific guide is a much better choice--it is more up to date and covers all the major South Pacific islands for almost the same amount of money."
