Vietnam (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"Although this book was a well laid out and as easy to follow as all rough guides, the information is hopelessly out of date. Hotels and restaurants do change all the time, particuarly in countries like Vietnam where the tourist industry is undergoing phenomenal growth, but trying to follow suggestions, directions or ideas from this Rough Guide proved to be a frustrating and in many cases fruitless exercise. The section on Ho Chi Minh City is particularly bad and I would advise taking a seperate guide & some accurate maps or risk missing some real treasures." If you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Houses in Vietnam, I would buy this book to take with you while in Vietnam.

"I had the Lonely Planet and my friend had the Rough guide and the difference was quite great. The section on the Mekong Delta for example was vastly more in depth in the LP and I would have been totally lost if I had used the Rough Guide." This book has fantastic information about Vietnam. So take it with you when you Rent a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Vietnam.

"I was very happy to have Rough Guide Vietnam for my travels in northern Vietnam during December, 2000 - January, 2001. For one thing I felt like I wasn't getting channeled down the Lonely Planet path, as most independent travelers were carrying that book and using it like their Bible. Also, whenever anyone compared my Rough Guide to their Lonely Planet, they said they found RG to be better. Rough Guide goes into more depth than LP in describing the sights and history. LP's maps are a little more comprehensive, but RG's listings of hotels are more user-friendly than LP. I very much enjoyed the book." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Vietnam. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Holiday Casa in Vietnam.

"Just came back from a three week trip to Vietnam with three books: the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide, and Footprint Handbook.

The Rough Guide is the best guidebook around for the country. It is superior to the Lonely Planet guide in the breadth and depth of coverage and especially its accuracy. I liked LP for other countries but here they did a very poor job.

I have not found even one instance where Lonely Planet provided information that Rough did not have. If you are traveling to the north, you may want to consider reading Footprint before you leave -- it has some interesting information.

Also, all hotels -- even the top ones -- can be negotiated down in price. Send them an e-mail and ask for special rates, corporate rates, etc. You can stay at the Metropole in Hanoi for less than half their rack rate." This book has best information on Vietnam, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation Villa in Vietnam.

Lonely Planet: World Food: Vietnam (Book)

Customer Rating:
"Historians like to say that geography is fate. Geography is also cuisine..." Vietnam is actually shaped like a don ganh, a bamboo pole with a basket of rice at each end--the rice-growing Red River and Mekong Deltas with 2400 km of coastline between. Inevitably, Vietnamese food has two constants: rice and nuoc mam (fermented fish sauce). Equally distinctive is the pungent aroma and ying yang balance of the five Chinese flavours (sweet, salty, bitter, sour, hot). World Food: Vietnam also explores how the French influence has been incorporated. Salad baguettes are authentic, yet sprinkled with fish sauce; café au lait is drunk with sweet condensed milk; snails are served, but can be as large as golf balls. In Danang, you can find Asia's finest ice cream parlour.

Instead of recommending upmarket restaurants, the guide refreshingly enthuses over specific roadside vendors such as Hanoi's che stalls (sweetened mung bean desert) or purveyors of infamous cha gio (spring rolls) and pho, "seductively delicious" beef noodle soup, as addictive as tobacco. Simplicity rules. The "Don't Miss" section suggests an ear of sweetcorn at Hoi An's nightmarket, locally brewed street bia hoi, or the magical native dragonfruit. Author Richard Sterling also wrote The Fearless Diner and he tracks down delicacies like grilled geckos and fruit bat.

World Food: Vietnam helps you choose where, when, how and what to eat when you arrive in a town. Incorporating maps, recipes and phrase book, it navigates Vietnam's regional variations and explains etiquette. The text is rich in culinary legends, myths, riddles and poetry reflecting the Vietnamese passion for food. --Sarah Champion
Reviews:

"A surprisingly colourful and informative read. This book is ideal for anyone who has experienced 'proper' Vietnamese food, that is 100%; Not the 50%chinese, 50%vietnamese version. It allows a person to have a deeper understanding of how aromas, flavours and textures can be crucial in Vietnamese cuisine. What can be better than the favourite breakfast of 'Pho'. Those lucky few, who have had the chance to experience this breakfast will know that it beats cornflakes by miles! A bit of a shame that it did not go on to explain about the numerous variations depending on the many regions that make up Vietnam. A person with an in depth knowledge of Vietnamese food can immediately tell which regions the food is from by just the aroma. Other than that it is a good introduction for all beginners!" This book has fantastic information about Vietnam. So take it with you when you Rent a Vacation Apartment in Vietnam.

"As a food writer planning a trip to Vietnam (for personal, not food-related reasons), I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the culture and cuisine. I may never cook any of the recipes in it, but it's helped me know what to look for when I go, and to anticipate my trip even more. I thought it was very well-written. Sterling's sense of adventure and good living are apparent in the guide in an infectious, inviting way. He is judgemental about no one but the foreign young people who go to Vietnam to eat fake burgers and wiener schnitzel instead of the light, beautiful food. And the photographs are as compelling as the writing. Buy this book!" Relax with this book when on Vacation in Vietnam. It would be so handy when you Rent a Vacation Property in Vietnam.

"the reference to dog meat preperation contrary to Lonely Planet's description is from Robert Templer's _Shadow and Wind: A View of Modern Viet Nam_." A wealth of information about Vietnam, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Vietnam.

Lonely Planet Vietnam (Book)

Reviews:

"Anyone heading to Vietnam should consider buying this book- lonely planet always do the job when it comes to providing basic information. However, I found that while I used the maps non-stop and found the sections on local and national history interesting and informative, I only used the sections on food, accommodation and excursions as indicators of average prices. Sadly, the places in the book were often overrun (and therefore overpriced) as a consequence of inclusion, and better deals could ususlly be found independantly. Another problem with the book is that I found much of the information to be out of date- Vietnam is a country in transition to the extent that it would be difficult for any guidebook to keep up with it.
Therefore while this book is definately useful, I don't think it's indispensible- providing you buy a map in each new town you go to, you could get by comfortably in Vietnam without it." Before renting a Alternative Vacation Casa in Vietnam, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Vietnam.

"For those of you who are planning to make your way across Indochina, it's worth shelling out a bit of extra cash to buy this book (instead of getting one of those "Vietnam-Cambodia-Laos" jobs..). Full of useful information and planning tips, the book also is written in a very chatty style which makes it enjoyable reading. The section on beaches was particularly helpful. The only thing I would like to see more of is colour photos instead of those black-and-white sketches!" This book has wonderfull information about Vietnam. So take it with you when you Rent a Alternative Vacation Property in Vietnam.

"I just got back from a three week trip to Viet Nam, and would have been lost without my trusty LP guidebook. I travelled from north to south and was never at a loss with the help of this book. Granted LP should have put in diacritics because without them, communication breaks down when you don't know the tones, but the in depth research and care that went into this book (and subsequently, all of LP's books) shines through to provide the reader with a competant, user-friendly travel guide. Plus, LP is much more gay-friendly than the other guidebook series." A wealth of information about Vietnam, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in Vietnam.

"I bought the Vietnam LP on advice from my roomate who never travels to a new place without one. The Vietnam LP soon became my bible in Vietnam, not to mention every other travelers that I met there as well. In fact kids on the streets of Hanoi and Saigon often sell photocopied versions of these LP's to tourists. No other tourist book is more popular there, and for good reason.
I used my LP all the time. I kept a bottle of water under one arm (Vietnam in July is hot) and my lonely planet under the other. Every question I could possibly think of LP had an answer for and a story and a map to go along with it. Honestly I can't recommend a book higher." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Vietnam. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Vacation House in Vietnam.

"LP Vietnam, as several others have mentioned, is misleading and out of date. But even worst, is that it tries to scare most travelers into following its suggested itinerary instead of venturing out on their own. I was going to outline some of the more glaring mistakes, but other reviews beat me to the punch.

In defense of LP, who have produced decent guidebooks in the past, Vietnam may be changing at such a fast pace that as soon as it was published much of the information was already out of date. However, not all the mistakes can be blamed on a country in the throws of rapid changes and as such as easily dismissed.

Hopefully the next edition will have greatly improved and won't be written in such an amateurish way. However, I think I'll pass and try the Rough Guide or take my chances without a guidebook! What a novel idea..." If you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Houses in Vietnam, I would buy this book to take with you while in Vietnam.

"I've just returned from the area covered in this guidebook, and used this (or at least tried to) throughout our holiday. While cultural information or descriptions are wonderful, (particularly on food) we found that, without fail, the majority of facts are wildly incorrect. I've lost count of the number of prices quoted that were plain wrong (although entry/exit fees, many guesthouses and travel tended to be cheaper than quoted here). Within three days we bought a second hand Lonely Planet, and used the Moon book for architecture, history and food.

When was this last updated? Not in this century." www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Vacation Cottage to Rent in Vietnam.

"This book is getting mixed reviews. It seems like friends of the author say its great. Those who tried to actually use the book are disappointed that everything is so out of date. This edition was not updated since the first edition and is now really out of date. Things change, but sloppy research is always out of style." Before renting a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Vietnam, I would read this book.

Dear Mom: a Sniper's Vietnam (Book)

"After each letter I felt like I had just opened the envelope and finished reading it directly from Joe, and then felt like he himself came in and sat down and started telling me his story. It was very easy to become totally engrossed in this book, and subsequently was a very emotional, quick read. It reminded me to be thankful to all of those who have served, and particularly to those who have the courage to remind us what it is like and what it means to serve. Major props and many thanks to Joe for telling his story. Put this one on my list of required reading for citizenship in our country." If you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Properties in Vietnam, I would buy this book to take with you while in Vietnam.

"I was in An Hoa in 1969 and served as a radio operator and forward observer for Kilo Company 3/5. This book really brought back memories and validated things which I have told my family for the last 30 years (Has it really been that long?). Joe Ward has succeeded in accurately representing the role and day to day events of the scout sniper in a combat unit. I have bought several copies for friends and family members. When they ask about Viet Nam, I give them a copy and tell them to read it to really understand. I hope Joe does more work. I really like his style. Thanks for the memories, man!" www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Holiday Cottage to Rent in Vietnam.

"I'm not a great reader simply because nothing ever holds my interest very long, even if I'm into the subject. But this book kept me coming back. It read smoothly, and Ward's letters home were perfectly placed throughout the book. This book has the perfect blend of action and drama that keeps you coming back. While not very thick, there is a lot of substance. I will read it again, and I was basically a non-reader.

Edit after second read: Please read this book. JT Ward has fans with sites online, but also I have read others since then, and nothing compares. A cup of coffee and this book will keep you riveted even when current events are calling. I ask for readers simply out of great interest and admiration for the writing style and modest way this story was told. Everyone will admire this book." This book has wonderfull information about Vietnam. So take it with you when you Rent a Vacation House in Vietnam.

"Wow. What an interesting tour of duty; one that carried danger and at the same time, sadness and humor. This book offers readers a rare glimpse of a controversial time in America and Vietnam's history, and also a highly enigmatic profession. No wonder people are fascinated by snipers! I admire the author and appreciate this rare look into a USMC Scount Sniper's life. He is a true hero. The letters to his mother touched me." "This book was very enlightening for me. I served in Vietnam for 24 months but had no idea we were operating this much recon in Laos and Cambodia. These were very brave men and my thanks go to the author for doing the research and bringing their stories to public attention after many years of relative obscurity. This story needed to be told!" Before renting a Alternative Holiday House in Vietnam, I would read this book while in Vietnam.

"Some people say that there are no heroes in war. Well this book proves them wrong. It's well defined story tells of SOG recon teams whose every mission was against the odds. These men will amaze you as they do the impossible. Always out numbered, but amazingly they acheive the impossible. They saved downed pilots and countless U.S. lives through their recon. It will give you new understanding of both Vietnam and war itself. This book is a must read!!!!!!!!" Before renting a Alternative Holiday House in Vietnam, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Vietnam.

"This book open a path I never knew exsisted about the Vietnam War. I never thought SOG's missions were so intense and dangers on every mission; to my amazement, SOG forces continued their mission with outstanding results, although sustaining 100% casualties. I cheered one second and felt sadden the next; the one emotion I knew, I did not want to finish this damn good book. If you like war stories, you'll love this book." This book has fantastic information about Vietnam. So take it with you when you Rent a Vacation Casa in Vietnam.

"An incredible account of military heroism against seemingly insurmountable odds. A must read for those who truly want to understand the meaning of service and dedication. A heartfelt thanks to John Plaster and his fellow SOG members." Before renting a Alternative Vacation Property in Vietnam, I would read this book while in Vietnam.

"This is a spectacular book. It tells a story of the courage and resourcefulness of a small unique group of men; willing to give it all for their fellow warriors. At the end of the book, without judgement, Maj Plaster points out that it was the U.S. Government that lost the Vietnam war and NOT the men in the field of battle. While the NVA snubbed their noses at our troops in Cambodia the IV ID was restricted to only an 18 mile insertion into Cambodia. The NVA had only to stay beyond their reach and ... they won. Had the Americans been turned loose Vietnam would be free today and the "killing fields" of 1975 Cambodia would never have happened. Thank you Mr. LBJ and Mr. RMN. I hope the blood on their hands is now cooking off in a place far warmer than July in Vietnam." If you are thinking about renting a Vacation Properties in Vietnam, I would buy this book to take with you while in Vietnam.
