Andalucia (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)

Reviews:

"I bought this book shortly before I moved to the region in May 2001. Naturally, everything has since gone euro, which causes a slight inconvenience, and now, being more than 2 years out of date, one finds that a few things have changed - hostals closed etc.

My one real complaint is the often jaundiced views of the authors - the whole piece written about Gibraltar is somewhat innaccurate, as are sweeping generalistions about Morroccans 'being robbed and beaten' by the Spaniards as they travel South - actually, it's unheard of!!

Nevertheless, I would still highly recommend this book, after some wonderful times spent in Cordoba and Seville, having simply taken the information from within." Before renting a Vacation Apartment in Spain, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Spain.

"I used this guide during a recent trip to Andalucia and chose it for the same reason as Sam (see other review). I found it an extremely useful guide for planning an itinerary, and I did not happen upon any major inaccuracies. I guess if you're the kind of person who gets worked up about having to 'waste' an afternoon in Granada (sounds like heaven), or taking a wrong turning on a walk, then you're probably going to be quite hard to please. I took numerous wrong turns and wasted time in some fabulous places, I recommend you buy this book and do the same." If you are thinking about renting a Alternative Holiday Apartments in Spain, I would buy this book to take with you while in Spain.

"Keeping in the tradition of the insight, clarity, and usefulness which has made Rough Guide among the best of guide book series, the Rough Guide to Andalucia is the definitive book for any tourist interested in visitng that region.

Uncluttered, with honest facts AND opinions about where to eat, landmarks, hotels, hostels, and more, the Rough Guide is peerless in it's thorough usefulness.

This book does an excellent job of presenting more than your usual tourist traps. Special needs travelers (pets, children, handicapped) can also get a sense of what may and may not be good ideas for your Andalucian odyssey.

All in all, if you're looking for a guide book that presents what you NEED to know without a lot of editorial musings, you will find the Rough Guide to Andalucia not only at the forefront of this genre, but without competition when it comes to giving you all things the "non-touristy tourist" wants to know." Relax with this book when on Alternative Vacation in Spain. It would be so handy when you Rent a Alternative Vacation Property in Spain.

"Fantastic resource for the Andalucian paradise! We travelled to Spain with other guides, purchased this one on Gibralter and weren't without it the rest of the visit! We also travelled with a 6 month old, great recommendations for sites and out of the way not- touristy spots. Roman ruins listed in here are incredible and would have been missed if using any other guide." A wealth of information about Spain, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Holiday Holiday property in Spain.

"Nice, complete summary. Balance between culture and accomodations/ dining info. Most accomodations are in the budget category. A good help in planning my vacation." Before renting a Vacation Cottage in Spain, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Spain.

Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (Book)

Customer Rating:
All Provenced out? Then head further south, to the breathtaking mountainous climes of Andalucia. Just don't be squeamish about driving over lemons. Chris Stewart, skilled sheep-shearer and sometime Genesis drummer, took one look at the Alpujarrás, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and decided that's where he wanted to be. This is the story of his adventures coming to terms with the terrain, the lifestyle and, of course, the locals, who possess all the rugged, homespun charm you'd expect. Stewart soon discovers all the hidden foibles of his bargain purchase, and spends the following year (rendered here in detail) installing the little luxuries of life like, say, water.

However, just when you're worrying that all this might degenerate into a rose-tinted Englishman-finds-nature idyll, Chris's wife enters the fray. Nonsense-free, straight-talking and relentlessly unsentimental, Ada should be a required resource for all travel writers. Ada gets bored with the fake machismo of pig-killing, Ada sees through the selfless "help" of the natives, Ada calls a peasant a peasant. With her on board, Stewart has the perfect counterbalance to his declared optimism, and Driving over Lemons becomes a loving but clear-sighted encomium, economically and wittily written, to a wonderful part of the world. --Alan Stewart
Reviews:

"Reviewed by: Rachael from Manchester, reading it in Andalucia.

Driving over lemons shows the real side of relocating to what would seem like an idyllic life in Spain. Chris (Cristobal) describes the everyday ups and downs of living on a farm in Andalucia, from getting access to a water supply to the birth of his daughter. He tells how his Spanish neighbours accept him into their community, teaching him how to build, farm and generally survive.

It is a heart-warming book that has spawned many lukewarm imitations. I am now about to read the 'sort of sequel' called 'A Parrot in the Pepper Tree' - I will keep you posted." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Spain, I would read this book while in Spain.

"Ex Genesis drummer Chris Stewart's great 1st book about him and his family moving from England to Spain is a great read ,from the difficulties in finding the right property to the general assortment of characters who pop up to help or hinder him and his family this book is a great advertisment for Spain and its people it makes you want to throw everything together and set off for Andulucia ,Stewart's easy flowing writing style makes this a great page turner and you will be finished before you know it ......." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday House in Spain, I would read this book.

The Rough Guide to Spanish (A Dictionary Phrasebook) (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"The Rough Guide to Spanish is great for the non Spanish speaker. I worked my way across Spain having started with just a few basic phrases and picking everything else up from this pocket sized guide. It not only has English:Spanish Spanish:English dictionaries with pronunciation tips, but also a quick sentence formation guide and menu translator.

The handy little hints and tips interspersed with the dictionary saved us from all sorts of faux pas and helped us make sense of signs, opening times and customs.

My copy is now very dog eared and grubby - always a good recommendation." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Holiday in Spain. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Spain.

"This little dictionary is written with the same fantastic info you get in the full Rough Guides. Just returned from Mallorca and found it a life-saver! Loved the fact that it is not just a phrase book but has lots of helpful info and spells words out phonetically to help with Spanish pronounciation. Light and compact a "must" if you are not familiar with Spanish. Fantastico!!" If you are thinking about renting a Vacation Cottages in Spain, I would buy this book to take with you while in Spain.

"This delightful 1cm thick pocket paperback is an English-Spanish and Spanish-English dictionary. Not only is this ideal because of its size and weight, but also for the pronunciation. Words are written in Spanish and also in brackets in an imitated pronunciation which is very easy for English speakers to use.
The phrases that are provided in the 'Basics' section are there to illustrate grammar points and are therefore mostly irrelevant for a phrase book buyer, but great for the beginner student in Spanish.
Typical 'Rough Guide' up-to-date points of interest to the traveller to Spain are interspersed in the dictionary:

'in summer banks don't open on Saturdays'" www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Property to Rent in Spain.

Andalucia (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)

Reviews:

"This book is essential reading for travellers to this part of Spain. The book's recommendations can be trusted and, whilst the information is thorough it isn't difficult to get to the more important parts quickly.

We used it to visit Seville, Granada, Malaga and Antequera in September 2003 and found it brilliant. It's written in an unfussy way, in plain English and by people who know what is worthwhile and what isn't.

Two important things to remember.

Buy the book well before you travel. (We bought it in the airport after we had booked some of our accommodation and so wasted hours looking at the 'net for stuff much more clearly detailed in the book).

The maps in the book are pretty sketchy and quite small. If you're travelling around, don't rely solely on these maps (and LP advises, in the book, which maps to buy).

Overall, there isn't a better guide-book that I've found." Before renting a Vacation Apartment in Spain, I would read this book.

"The contents page needs to be much more detailed .
The maps are fairly good , but spread through the text like pressed flowers ..... aimlessly .
For example : Seville ( general ) fills pages 134 and 135 .
Yet the Seville Central map is 10 pages away ( 144 and 145 ) .
Why , why , why , why , why ???
The index is far too short .
Seville's Feria de Abril is discussed in a large paragraph on page 153 . Yet , "Feria de Abril" is NOT in the index !!!
Many other silly layout mistakes make this book AWKWARD to use .
Some of the text could do with 'tightening up' too . Here and there , a rather pointless 'wordy' style breaks out .
Colour photo pages are very well done ." Before renting a Vacation Cottage in Spain, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Spain.

"I've browsed through this guide a few times in local bookstores in Seville and have found it very mediocre, not to say downright inaccurate. Many of the hotels and hostels it recommends no longer exist, there's little advice about safety and what little they say about safety is completely false. Seville, as all the other Andalusian cities, is a safe place to visit. There is petty theft like in all major cities in Europe, but that's all. There are no significant differences in that respect between, say, Seville and Paris, or London. So, please, don't pay too much attention to safety tips given by Lonely Planet guides. As a Sevillian, I can guarantee you the city is safe and that all you have to do is keep an eye on your belongings as you would in any major airport, railway station or city in Europe. Do come to Andalusia and enjoy our balmy climate and the warm welcome we are always willing to give foreigners. One big hug from Seville!" A wealth of information about Spain, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Holiday Holiday property in Spain.

"Lonely Planet Andalucia is clearly inferior to Rough Guide Andalucia and below the standards I have come to expect from Lonely Planet. I found repeatedly that the author(s) appear morei interested in cutesy writing style than in incisive fieldwork and allowed their infatuation with their glib comments to gloss over their lack of good travel writing and description. The guides to eating are almost useless. For those who think otherwise, check the section Where to Eat in Seville. For those who make the mistake of buying the book, I suggest you don't even bother with the reviews of eating places.
I decided to leave my Lonely Planet Andalucia in Seville and brought my Rough Guide home with me.
The series editors need to clamp down on the writing style of the individual volumes and force them to write for the traveler, not for themselves." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Spain, I would read this book while in Spain.

"Considering this guide covers such a wide area of Andalucia it still manages to recommend some of the best of everything that anyone would hope to see in this part of Spain.

I used this guide as the basis of planning a trip to Andalucia, from booking excellent hotels in both Granada and Jaen to visiting amazing sites like the Alhambra palace. We tried to find one of the recommended restaurants but it was so popular that you had to book in advance!

The guide recommends everything from culture, entertainment, restaurants, traditional dishes, places to stay and places to visit. It is based on a grid reference system with pull out maps at the front and the back of the book (that are not complicated to fold away).

I do not visit a new place now without taking a Top 10 guide with me, they are invaluable." Before renting a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Spain, I would read this book.

"An easy, fun and affortable way to understand and talk spanish! You just download the 2 programs from the CD (the one is just words in different categories eg. numbers, countries, verbs, beverages etc and the other program is how to put those words into sentences.)

The games, the structure of the page layout, the speaking exercises (you can accually record your own voice!) and the multimedia in general, they all contribute to make your learning interesting!

I absolutely reccommend it but i will advice you to also have a spanish friend at hand in order to practise what you have learned!" Before renting a Holiday House in Spain, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Spain.

"As a complete beginner, I have gone from knowing absolutely nothing about the Spanish language to speaking in sentences after three weeks.

The flash cards are really effective - even my 10 yr old daughter has learned the numbers, colours, days of the week etc.
