| Lonely Planet Singapore (Lonely Planet City Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Although this edition is beginning to show the need of updating, the LP guide is a great way of highlighting the depth and variety of experiences that Singapore has to offer." Before renting a Vacation Apartment in Singapore, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Singapore. "However, note that the Chinese Opera Circle is not necessarily done every Friday and Saturday night. Some nights they have not bookings. Call ahead to make sure that they are going to perform." This book has supper information on Singapore, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation House in Singapore. |

| Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"A disappointing guide, especially if you want to go Borneo, there's a general lack of detail and a feeling of it being out of date. Also not much information for scuba divers and the book omitted the island of Layang Layang altogether. It was better for the more commonly travelled places such as KL and Penang on peninsular malaysia." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Singapore, I would read this book while in Singapore. "Once again Rough Guides have proved to be the most definitive guide to wherever I travel. Great stuff, reliable information, and of course its something to read while chilling out in some of the world's most interesting countries!" www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Casa to Rent in Singapore. "this rough guide isn pretty much the same as the other guides.. as usual in singapore it contains the usual places.. orchard, little india, sentosa, east coast and the usual touristy places. It does not include the heartlanders area eg. Hougang, Yishun etc. For eg, in woodlands.. it only mention the the zoo.. did you know that's a big Shopping Mall in Woodlands called the Causeway point.. nect to the MRT station.. As for eating places.. it fail to capture the good places for local food.. may interest the food lovers and those adventourous enough to try.. It should include a portion on the heartlanders.. I'm sure some tourist may want to see our locals their way of life.. for eg a tour of an HDB estate (public housing) that may include the market, the coffeeshop, look at the flat inside out.. etc.. the peculiar and distinct characters of the heartlanders.. etc.. otherwise tourists may think S'pore is just of the "place"" www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Vacation Apartment to Rent in Singapore. "This guide is great, at least from a pre-trip standpoint. When it comes to planning a trip to Malaysia, the historical and cultural aspects of the book are above reproach. The authors clearly know their way around the country. But that doesn't translate into using the book when you get to Malaysia. While hotel prices are listed, they're done so using a code system, forcing readers to continue flipping back to the key located early on in the guide. I've relied on Lonely PLanet's guidebook before, and I'll keep doing so - only because its layout is superior to the Rough Guide." If you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Apartments in Singapore, I would buy this book to take with you while in Singapore. |

| Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: If you're planning anything more than a Kuala Lumpur stopover or a fast overland commute from Thailand to Singapore, Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei is an essential companion. In fact, clocking in at nearly 700 pages, it may even inspire you to spend extra time in this region, which has only been divided into the three distinct countries since WWII. Encompassing Chinese, Indians, Malays, rainforest tribes, "original people" and sea-gypsies, with their innumerable religions it has one of the most diverse cultures in Asia. The cover is emblazoned with a turtle and the vague slogan "The adventure starts here". Neither gives you an idea of what you'll find in an area so hard to categorise. Culture ranges from the hi-tech of Kuala Lumpur's Cyberjaya zone or the 88-storey Petronas towers to the ancient longhouse communities deep in Borneo's jungle. You can shop in Singapore's Orchard Road malls or experience the abundant wildlife of Taman Negara National Park in Peninsula Malaysia. You could check out the water villages of Brunei, one of the worlds smallest but richest counties; discover bat caves and orang-utans in Sarawak; climb Mount Kinabalu in Sabah; or check out the incredible diving waters off Semporna. Lonely Planet Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei is rammed with reasons why the region, arguably the least-fashionable bit of Southeast Asian backpacker itineraries, should be given more thought. One Amazon.co.uk reader complains that the previous edition was disparaging, but Lonely Planet should be praised for their honesty in pre-warning travellers where other guides might gloss over the negative. Equally, this guide puts many of the preconceived notions in context. Yes, Singapore is obsessed by fines and orderliness, but it also has a surprisingly vibrant nightlife, joyous hawker centres overflowing with cheap tasty food and is a fascinating microcosm of Asia. And yes, there is alcohol scarcity and problems for women in some Moslem areas of Peninsula Malaysia, but it is also a very multi-ethnic country. However, popular notions of Brunei being expensive and boring are confirmed--not being a place for budget travellers, it gets just 26 pages. --Sarah Champion Reviews:
"The book tries to give a good overview of what to do and see but is misses lots of cheap places to eat and sleep that are much better some on the guide. I have been living in Malaysia for quite a long time, and although this new edition has updated some information, there are still many things that have not been corrected. Some of the places mentioned in the guide do not exist anymore. Some restaurants mentioned from Kuching are exclusively for tourists and the food is terrible compared to Malaysian average!!! I think that you can live woithout it." www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Apartment to Rent in Singapore. "I agonised over a number of guidebooks to take out to Malaysia with me and ended up with this one. Fortunately, I got it right - none of them are particularly cheap and it's a pain to take something out that turns out to be useless. Seriously, if you're travelling to Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei, don't go without the Lonely Planet guide, it's absolutely invaluable. As well as the usual stuff, there are cultural tips to help you avoid offending the people; the crits about places to visit, hotels and restaurants don't pull any punches so if they're not worth it, you'll know in advance; and there's loads of historical information to keep you well informed. As a companion to this, the Malay phrase book is a must, although so many people speak English, you don't need to worry. It is nice to be able to say please and thank you in Malay though - the people seem to appreciate it! You can't do better than this one. As another reviewer says - this is the Bible." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Singapore. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Holiday Casa in Singapore. "We found it very useful, and the great advantage is it's not too big!! The one gripe i do have is that it gives border info as if you are travelling south to north (penisular malaysia). I wasn't, so it was frustrating to find the advice for getting to the towns beyond the border only went as far as "...to get to Hat Yai take a bus...etc..."." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday House to Rent in Singapore. "We ended up calling it "the Bible". Why? Because all the answers are in it.!! Several times we said to our selves that this information should have been in LP. And looking one more time - it was usually there. LP helps you plan and avoid vasting time. Of course you shold try to do things which is not mentioned in LP but this can be a major challanges. The guide goes every where and the information is incredibly reliable. So if you go - bring LP or bring no guide book at all - alternatives are poor sustitutions. We also brought a Footprint - but the reality is that nobody is above or besides LP. 22-08-2001" This book has supper information on Singapore, well worth reading if you renting a Alternative Holiday Property in Singapore. |

| Buffaloes Over Singapore: RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and Dutch Brewster Fighters in Action Over Malaya and the East Indies 1941-42 (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Once again Brian Cull has demonstrated his mastery as an aviation historian. While assembling the full factual details he still manages to give the human story. As with his previous works this most detailed record of a forgotten campaign is extremely readable and a must buy for any serious WWII aviation enthusiast." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vocation or Holiday Property to Rent in Singapore. "Once again Brian Cull has delivered the goods, as with his previous books "Hurricanes over Malta" "Spitfires over Sicily" etc. He has managed to combine historical fact with the human story. In this book we see how the RAF and Commonwealth fighter pilots were literally thrown to the wolves, yet how flying this obsolecent aircraft, gallantly fought to the bitter end. Mr. Cull is to be commended for both the quality of his research, and of his ability to tell the story in a very readable manner. Definitely a must buy for anyone interested in the far eastern airwar. Bruce Lander" A wealth of information about Singapore, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Singapore. "This is another in a series of books written by Brian Culls, Christopher Shores, or another of the latest generation of WWII aviation historians from Grub Street who are begetting comprehensive histories of often little explored WWII aerial arenas. The aerial defense of Singapore has been largely neglected by historians. Often, when one of these writers publishes, there is little left to explore on the topic. Cull's research isn't quite up to that standard in this volume. This is due in part to the fact that his subjects lost the battle and, thus, many of their records. (Ever wonder what the battle history of Japan's 68th Sentai at New Guinea was?) Japanese records don't exactly abound either. Nonetheless, he does an excelent job and I recommend this work mightily to anyone interested in the Pacific air war." | The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Being voted as one of the most influential Asian leaders, itproves that Mr Lee has been a respected leader to one and all. The book goes into details the hardships faced by Singapore when it tried to gain self-rule and the serious corruption in the government then. At the same time, he added humour in it and tells us more of his adolescence and marriage life. I really anticipate the second volume to be published soon as it will offer deeper insight to how this influential man would transform a tiny "red dot" on the world map to a nation which made its mark on the international stage within just a few decades." This book has supper information about Singapore. So take it with you when you Rent a Alternative Vacation House in Singapore. "As an American who has spent years living in Singapore, I cautiosly read Lee Kuan Yew's book. I expected a tome of self-congratulatory hogwash, but I was rewarded with a candid, sometimes brutally honest, story of the making of a country. Whether you love him or hate him, Lee Kuan Yew is the only person who could write the definative story of the making of this marvelous Republic called Singapore. It is well written, with careful insights, amazing stories of courage and self sacrifice, and a good bit of humor. I highly reccomend it." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Singapore. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Vacation Cottage in Singapore. "Although certain portions manage to be engaging and do present an illuminating view of Singapore's recent history, on the whole, it simply remains a 680-page shrine to the author's own ego and reputation, deftly down-playing the efforts (and objections) of other politicians of the era whose contributions to Singapore are certainly no less than that of the author's. The book also frequently descends to being a loudspeaker through which Mr. Lee, in the confort of his old age, may expound on his (numerous) half-baked philosophies on life and politics, as well as lash out at his old adverseries. One might argue, of course, that these writings are after all supposed to be his "memoirs" and as such must present his personal view on the events of his life. However, if viewed from that angle, then the book never really gets anywhere at all." Before renting a Holiday Property in Singapore, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Singapore. "I've spent more than 8 years living in Singapore spread over 4 decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s). I thought after all of that experience I had a strong sense of why things are the way they are in Singapore (Both things I liked and hated.) I was wrong. LKY's book opened my eyes and gave me a look at things I had never considered. While I may not have been a big fan of LKY in the past . . . after reading his book, combined with my own knowledge of SE Asia, I honestly believe he did the right things needed to build Singapore. To top it off, he provides a surprising personal look at himself for so private a man. Frankly, I now think Lee is one of the most courageous, and effective leaders of the 20th Century. This book is absolutely a must read! Well done Mr. Lee." A wealth of information about Singapore, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vacation Vacation property in Singapore. "It might be of interest to you to know that Lee Kuan Yew's writing style was deliberately adapted and simplified to reach not just scholars, but a larger audience: the general public, and more specifically, the younger generation of Singaporeans. If you have read his speeches, you will know that he is exceptionally eloquent and known for being adept at the English language. Perhaps the greater purpose that the Senior Minister had in mind was that this book will become a text that is found in every history classroom in Singapore, although it will undoubtedly be dissected by scholars as well. Lee Kuan Yew's straight-forward style of writing conveyed historic facts, his political analysis, and acute judgment of people and circumstances with clarity, which was not to be clouded by style." If you are thinking about renting a Holiday Casas in Singapore, I would buy this book to take with you while in Singapore. "Reading Lee Kuan Yew's "The Singapore Story" is analogous to swimming in an ocean of enlightenment. It is a unique piece of writing. Candid and down-to-earth, Mr. Yew's memoirs showed that courage, faith, hope, and perseverance are not only enough to transform a man, but an entire nation. Singapore's victories over colonialism and communism showcased this fact. I no longer wonder why Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other top-notchers find this book irresistible." www.HomeIsAway.com great Alternative Holiday Property to Rent in Singapore. |
