"I usually avoid The Lonely Planet guidebooks as I find them getting more & more commercialised as less 'off the beaten track'. Therefore when I used the guide to Portugal I was thrilled at it's content, maps, recommendations & overall informative value. I have since lent this to friends who also have had nothing but praise for it's merit - well done!" "We used this as our only guide around Lisbon and the north of Portugal. This guidebook was full of relevant and useful information. The advice for lone women travellers and information on transport was especially good. The only area where it let us down was in the nightlife section - it seems that the hotspots of Lisbon and Porto aren't quite what they used to be. Overall an excellent guide." "You can't expect everything from a phrase book, but this one is quite good. It caters for the needs of the visitor who just wants to get by. It has a good selection of words and phrases. You usually find what you need or an alternative that will do. I particularly like the English sound-alike transcription of the Portuguese words and phrases. It helps with the pronunciation. "In my view, this history of Portugal gives a distorted image of the country. It stresses the country's problems and plays down its achievements. The book pictures Portugal as a country struggling to establish a place on the world scene; modernise its economy and society; and secure political stability (!). In contrast, one can not find much on Portugal's gold age of the voyages of discovery and a worldwide maritime empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In fact there is not much on the first centuries of Portugal as a country. The whole book is rather biased, giving a one-sided and not particularly flattering picture of Portugal. I much prefer the more objective and well-balanced approach of 'Portugal: A Companion History, by Jose Hermano Saraiva et al." Before renting a Vacation Property in Portugal, I would read this book.
