| The Rough Guide to Poland (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Excessively PC like other Rough Guides - ...I'm sure but the outdoor activities of more interest to the average reader seem to get less attention. Better indexing would have been useful. For example the famous Wieliczka salt mine receives a page and a half (good) but is not mentioned in the index. In general the maps and practical information are useful and museum descriptions are good." Before renting a Vacation Apartment in Poland, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Poland. "The only thing rough about this book is that it was allowed to pass a copy editor and onto printing while in rough draft form. This is by far one of the worst travel guides I have ever purchased...way out of date, biased, bigoted. If one ever intended to see the out of the way sights by using this book you may just as well forget it. The maps are unusable, there are no helpful tourists tips ie where to catch a tourist bureau, a restroom, etc. It makes you not want to visit Poland at all. What a shame since getting off into the country side areas, even cities of 10-25,00 people there is no info. Save your money and buy a national geographic subscription. ken gorski, el paso, texas August 16, 2003" A wealth of information about Poland, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in Poland. "This guide had extensive information on Poland, including coverage of many small towns omitted from other books. It is much more thorough than Lonely Planet. It also includes more information on sites of Jewish interest, which Lonely Planet virtually ignores. Perhaps that is why the other reviewer considered it a negative book. As with most guides geared to a budget audience, information on upmarket hotels and restaurants is limited at best. However, there is much more detail of things off the beaten path than one would find in a more upmarket guide." Before renting a Vacation Property in Poland, I would read this book. |

| Lonely Planet Poland (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"This is the least helpful Lonely Planet Guide I have used and I can't recommend it for two main reasons. The style is very irritating - lots of "arguably the best" type phraseology - well is it or isn't it?! It reads like a bad translation and it probably is because the author is a Pole who lives in Melbourne. Secondly, the information on accommodation and places to eat is sparse and out of date. I used the guide in Krakow where excellent hostels like Bling Bling don't even get a mention. Also in Warsaw. Overall, it's like being told about Poland by your uncle who remembers it from 20 years ago. And goodness it sounds dull but it's not!" This book has supper information on Poland, well worth reading if you renting a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Poland. "Lonely Planets guidebooks is one of your best friends on any trip to a new country. This is a book about a whole large country and it can't (and should not) possibly cover all the details on what to do. In this guide they manage to give you all the basics about where to stay and eat, how to travel and what to see. The guidebook has a good amount of alternatives under each sectiona nd the respective ratings are very good according to those hostels, restaurants and other things I tried out. If you are backpacking through Poland this book is a necessity and something you can't live without. Given the fact that not so many Poles speaks English, this book proves even more valuable when you can point at the place you are looking for and get directions from the helpful and friendly Poles. The sections on history and culture is not an indepth explanation, but rather a good overview, which is the aim of Lonely Planet. This is a book for independent travellers." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Poland, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Poland. "I'm staying in Poland for three months and the Lonely Planet-book gives me so many suggestions of things to see that I will return in a short time to see more of the country because three months are not enough. It is my first Lonely Planet book, but I am sure I will buy more. The guide never disappointed me. There is information in it for all types of persons! Latest information can be found on Internet so your guide is always up-to-date. You just should buy one when going to Poland." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Poland. It would be so handy when you Rent a Vacation Casa in Poland. |

| Poland Insight Travel Map (Insight Travel Map S.) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"I would highly recommend this travel map. I travelled from Warsaw to Cracow, and the locations were precisely as stated; I only got lost once (in Lublin, but that was because I missed my turn-off). A triumph of the cartographer's art." www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Casa to Rent in Poland. |

| A Concise History of Poland (Cambridge Concise Histories) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"This is beyond a doubt the best history of Poland I have read so far (and I run a website on Polish History). It is consise yet detailed enough for any reader or for the curious. There are fascinating facts that one does not come across in any of the other histories which add to the general background and it is written in a eminently readable fashion. Lukowski is a very familiar name amongst students of Polish History - his account of the Partitions is a classic and the partnership with Zawadzki makes me want to read that historian's work also. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you want a History of Poland then this is the definative version." A wealth of information about Poland, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Holiday Holiday property in Poland. "As the authors acknowledge, there is nothing yet in English to replace Norman Davies's two-volume "God's Playground" for a really detailed history of Poland. Still, this Concise History takes the reader smoothly through more than 1,000 years of the Polish past, and it is especially good on the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also remarkably fair in its assessment of the Communist period. While accepting that Polish Communism was not as ferocious as some of the varieties elsewhere in eastern Europe, many readers might want to see a bigger tribute paid to the democratic opposition activists who, after all, played such a crucial part in ensuring that the transition to a free society was peaceful." Before renting a Holiday Casa in Poland, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Poland. "In contrast to the usual myths, it is such a pleasure to read a more honest historical account written by two ethnic Polish writers, now, after many decades of war propagandas. As the authors of this book state: 'The 20th century has added its own myths ...after the Second World War, Polish historiography was want to depict a 'Piast Poland' whose boundaries were curiously congruent with those of the post 1945 state'. James Michener's book 'Poland' (claiming that Poland should have rightfully conquered Prussia), is also one of those myths perpetuating fictions. Michener, a fiction travel writer gentlemen, was taken in by his charming hosts, during the Communist Polish government, while writing his book. Some people take his fantasy book 'Poland' as factual history of Poland. In contrast the two authors of this book, Jerzy Lukowski and Hubert Zawadzki have done some factual research. High time that this 'Concise History of Poland' was written and published." This book has great information about Poland. So take it with you when you Rent a Holiday House in Poland. "If you have no knowledge of Polish history, this book is a good place the start. The authors recommend Playground of the Gods if you are looking for a more detailed history of Poland, but I haven't read those yet so I can't "offically" recommend them. This book covers basic events and ideas that occured in Poland for the past 1000 years. In addition to politics and military events, the authors attempt to list cultural figures, such as Chopin, and how those figures reflected or affected Polish events. There were few details on events most people normally think about when they think of Poland, such as concentration camps and WWII. However, these issues aren't ignored entirely, just given the same coverage as other events in Polish history." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Poland. | Heart of Europe: The Past in Poland's Present (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Norman Davies's great skill is writing detailed history that keeps general readers interested, while not skimping on academic detail. In this book, he has condensed his two-volume masterpiece "God's Playground" into a form more suitable for generalists. The result is a triumph - a brief but highly enjoyable history, enlivened by Davies's dry wit and a treasury of pertinent anecdotes. Poland's magnificent and tragic history is portrayed here in its full range and scope, neither glorifying the Poles as eternal martyrs for freedom, nor slandering them as backward xenophobes. Given the widespread public ignorance of Polish history, and the sensitivity of Poles to external comment on it, the greatest accolade for Davies must surely be that the Polish translation of God's Playground has been selected as the official history textbook for use in Polish schools. This new edition of Heart of Europe includes new material on the changes in Poland since 1989." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Poland. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Vacation Apartment in Poland. "But sociology and psychology as well. I have been trying to educate myself in the area of European History over the course of the last year or so. As an introduction, I bought "Europe: A History" by Davies. After that overview, I have acquired other titles that focus on specific topics on European history such as "Heart of Europe: A Short History of Poland." As a novice, I have no qualifications to challenge the history. I have a problem with the style. Mr. Davies, perhaps as someone who "feels" history, spends a great deal of effort addressing the sociological and psychological consequences of the various historical events. If Mr. Davies were to describe a car accident, he would include descriptions of how the passengers and by-standers felt and what it was that might have caused them to do what they did next. For me, I would rather have the facts reported as if they were a newspaper article. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book for the factual information." Before renting a Alternative Vacation House in Poland, I would read this book. "Davies ruffled feathers of academics especially with his perspective on the fate of Jews in Poland during WW II. Poles often are presumed guilty of "not doing enough" to help Jews escape the Nazis. Davies argues that Poles were also in need of help and not in any position to offer others much help. His argument conflicted with views generally held by Jewish intellectuals and others and he had claimed that their influence had him removed from a proposed teaching position at a university. In any case, the book should be read as a serious contribution to understanding Polish history, and not as a polemical threat to anybody's "ironclad" notions." This book has fantastic information on Poland, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation House in Poland. "I learned more about history of Poland then from any history lessons. Especially I apreciate history of Polish Jews and origins of Polish Nation." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vocation or Holiday in Poland. | The Lion and the Eagle: Polish Second World War Veterans in Scotland (Voice of War Series) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"I purchased this book for my grandad who was born in poland and came to scotland during world war two. This book seemed to be written exactly for him in that the content is full of stories of bravery and sacrifice. The stories within the book are very moving and I feel that after having read it I can understand the sacrifices my grandfather made. The book has good sized text and a few pictures to set the tone for the different stories. I loved this book and have read it a few times. As i said before it was purchased for my grandad but he has not yet been allowed to read it.....Soon though." Relax with this book when on Alternative Holiday in Poland.
