"If you are intending to buy this book for a run-down on the sights or on cultural tips , then go for it. But if you want any useful information on hotels, prices, places to eat or shopping then forget it. The tourist industry in the UAE and Oman have changed beyond recognition since this guidebook was published four years ago and most of the 'in' places to stay such as the Madinat Al Jumeirah in Dubai and the Chedi in Muscat won't be found here. A better alternative is the recently published Arabian penisula lonely planet book. of Oman i was left with NO IMPRESSION.
I arrived to find it exciting, stunning and
full of activities. The books prices for hotels and
taxis, juice etc were ALL WAY OFF. All too high.
For instance a fresh made juice in front of you
cost one hundred omani basas...
a coke one hundred basa
a dinner one riyal
a hotel varied.
a taxi ride 200 basa for a few kilometers..
and the book gave no feeling or emotion to the
country at all... i browse thru it, and after arriving never openned it again. in fact i left it behind in oman as i
found it to be a heavy wieght with no signifigance.
perhaps the AUTHOR was fearful of Muslim countries and did
not like Omanis...too bad. I will never buy lonley planet
products again...

For the budget traveler, it is absolutely useless. The so-called "best hotel on the corniche" in Muscat turned out to be a dingy, roach-infested dive. The maps for Oman are minuscule, poorly drawn, and lack detail. The entire history of Oman is condensed into five pages. Don't waste your money on this guide. Oman is a very easy country to travel in, and you hardly need this guidebook. This is the sort of guidebook you find yourself leaving behind at your hotel. If Duabi is your destination, go with the newer "Dubai" guide. Pity, though, that Lonely Planet charges you the same price for a city guidebook as they do for a two-country guidebook." A wealth of information about Oman, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Oman. "Not enough pictures. If they are going to cover their faces, you could at least show us the rest of their bodies." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Oman, I would read this book. "This book was well researched and well written, but the author's opinions are strongly felt throughout the entire book. The author's voice is also somewhat condescending. While I did learn a little bit about Arab women in general and women in Oman in particular, a much broader sample of women's lives in Arab countries is found in "Price of Honor" by Jan Goodwin. Also the information in Ms. Goodwin's book was researched for several years in the 90's, whereas Ms. Wikan's book is based upon only 9 months of living in Oman during the 1970's." "I found this book absolutely fascinating having lived in Oman for five years 90 to 96 and wish I had been able to read this book while I was there, it would have made me more aware of the general political situation. Anyone who has lived in Oman or is thinking of doing so would enjoy this book. Its generally an easy read, though the points are a little labored. I have no way of judging its accuracy or if the interpretation of events are correct but many of the areas discussed I had heard rumors of, which was interesting in its self.
