"This book is useful as most of the hostels etc. still exist, but be careful when you plan your expenditure; the Kwacha has lost a lot of its value since publication so you would expect things to be cheaper, BUT - the backpacker based hostels have easily become more expensive. "I have recently set up a Malawi Cichlid tank and thought:"I'll do some reading up on the subject."
Not as easy as it sounds as many books around now were written before 1980 and seem to miss or incorrectly categorise the newest fish species.
This book contains some of the best photos of fish I have seen.
The quality of the pictues is excellent and real care has been taken to show the best specimens and ideal tank set-ups.
The "down to earth" wording makes it very easy reading and the simple navigation of the book lets you pick up and put down at your leisure rather than having to read it all to understand.
The author seems to be writing almost as if he's speaking to a friend or describing a fantastic holiday adventure.
The author tries not to go into too much of the technical stuff but most FAQ's will be answered by this book.

"This book is really great, straight forward and elaborate even though it only is 95 pages. There's a nice describtion of 100+ fish - including natural habitat, size, requirements, diet, breeding and colour fotos. Also this book covers how to set up the aquarium and run it as well as spawning tips and a brief history of the lake Malawi.

On the down side there are some typos especially in the translation to the metric system, the chapter on setting up the aquarium should have been longer - there is a 14 line text covering live plants in Malawi aquaria. I know that most people don't want plants in their Malawi aquaria but there's plants on a lot of photos showing Malawi fish (and I want plants!).

"This is THE best little cichlid book for Lake Malawi. But don't let the word little fool you, this book is packed with information on dozens of Lake Malawi cichlids. I especially like that the book breaks down the lake's cichlids into the two main categories of mbuna and Haplochromines. There are over 100 excellent color photos of the most popular species accompanied by descriptions of natural habitat, size, husbandry requirements, diet, and breeding. I always take this book with me when I go to a fish auction or my local aquarium society meeting. There are other books that contain information on more species but none that gives you this much information at such a great price!"
