"This is the first time I've been disappointed with a Lonely Planet publication. I found this guide to Italy superficial and not helpful. It didn't contain information about some quite large towns, information about reaching destinations in scant and maps are not easy to read. And I preferred it when Lonely Planet put all the general information in the front of the book followed by the specifics region by region." This book has best information on Italy, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation Cottage in Italy.

"We visited about eleven cities in northern and central Italy and we carried both the Lonely Planet Italy and the Rough Guide Italy with us. I had the Rough Guide Italy and had no problems looking up information. My companion had the Lonely Planet Italy and she eventually gave up on it. She found the LP to be lacking in basic information and basically a book better left at home. We would recommend the Rough Guide instead." "I bought the Lonely Planet and found it didn't even have a single word about my favorite place in Italy, a small gem of a town with an incredible hostel and scenery (I can't tell the place because I don't want everyone to go there.) It also was very out of date, all of the prices were wrong and I found the reviews of places to be hard to distinguish. It says everything is great so you are left confused about where to spend you time. I ended up using Let's Go which i preferred 100%." "This is ideal for carrying around with you all day while in Italy. It is slim enough to fit comfortably in a pocket or bag, and has most of the words you will need in day to day situations. The layout and design are good: clear typography and use of colour. There are many phrases as well as words, and I found surprisingly often that these were just what I needed.

The downside is that there are relatively few words. This cannot be avoided except by making the book bigger or the type smaller. You may want a "proper" dictionary as well. Similarly, the menu reader omits a number of things like the less common varieties of fish, often leaving you guessing. I would have preferred a much more detailed food section as a separate volume. However, for general use, at this price, it's excellent value." A wealth of information about Italy, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vacation Vacation property in Italy.

"Well, all I can say for know is that it's handy for bunging in my daypack for my future trips to Italy. Well thought out and explained. Gives a good overview as to how the language is like. "We had this book and Barron's Italian Visual Language Guide on our holiday in Italy.

This one was much easier to use. The dictionary format made it so easy to find the right phrase. Our other book was set up in the more traditional 'at the hotel' sections and there would be 20 pages to look through to find an appropriate phrase.

With the rough guide you look up time and there is a selection of phrases around the idea.

"Just back from 3 days in Rome and it would not have been the same without the Rough Guide. What a source of information. From the history of Rome to the maps to the individual descriptions of each place of interest, it never left my side!! Thoroughly recommended." "I've just got back from Rome, and this book was my guide the whole time I was there.

It has enough information within it, to ensure you know the important aspects of the many historical sites. It also has great listings on eating out, and where to stay, and lots of snippets of information that will come in handy. This guide stayed in my ruck sack the whole time I was there (I enhanced the maps at the back of the guide by purchasing a Lonely Planet laminated fold away map - great when it starts to rain).

As for Rome itself, what a beautiful place, I stood in the colleseum on an upper level directly opposite where gladiators would have made their first entrance into the arena, at the start of the many games held there, and read the section from the book to my friend, and a few others were listening in and we all started to talk about what the book has said...so yes, it is worth the purchase, and I would strongly recommend it as a guide." "I bought this book while I was living in Rome, and in my six months there saw nearly all the sights listed and more. I especially loved the book's size--I could hide it in my pocket and not look so much like a tourist, and I didn't have to walk around with a big huge map unfolded in front of me. If only the maps in the book could be a little more detailed (like, including the names of the piazzas and churches mentioned in the text!). The bars and restaurants recommended are places I actually went and would recommend to other travelers.
I did find some errors in the text, but unless you're searching for specific works of art, etc. like I do, this shouldn't be a problem. Definitely my favorite of my 5+ Rome travel guides.. "Very nice map this. It's waterproof, being made of plastic, and has jolly clear mapping. It shows all the ferry routes, water bus routes, cross-canal traghettos, etc. The thing was stuffed in my back pocket and squashed for three days solid, and still looks literally like new. Talk to me Italian Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced (Software)

Talk to Me Italian is a well-composed CD-ROM programme with some quite flashy graphics, good video learning aids and an online resource centre. The language learner is provided with a map on which they can chart their progress from beginner to advanced in a variety of subject areas, including the supermarket, the post office and the aftermath of an accident.

Like Transparent Language, Linguaphone, and other programmes in the field, Talk to Me Italian comes with voice-recognition software that will monitor your pronunciation. At the lower level, you participate in an interactive dialogue and select your response from three options. As things progress, you move to rearranging words in sentence order when they are thrown at you all jumbled up. The vocabulary becomes progressively more complex, but simply pointing the cursor at a Italian word provides the English translation.

This is a highly competent software package. One of the best things about it is its sense of humour. In one dialogue you have the option of replying in Italian "I'm a machine, I have no name." This sort of wit is quite unusual in language packages and it really sets Talk to Me apart from its competitors. --Toby Green

"I have been studying Italian for a year and bought this item out of interest.
It is very very poor, put together by computer people and not language teachers. In fact it teaches you nothing, but does test your language skill. However you can not learn, it has no lessons in any conventional form. You can not possibly develop the skill of speaking Italian from this.
The only thing of interest is the section that uses a microphone to asses your pronunciation of Italian.

"I'm Italian and I bought it for my boyfriend. I was very excited. But as soon as we installed it we realized it wasn't what we thought. They say "you being able to learn a language and conversation skills from beginner to advanced" and there is nothing further from the truth. It helps you only with the pronunciation, but you must speak Italian already otherwise you don't know what your saying. And let me tell you, being Italian myself even the pronunciation is not always so good. If you're trying to learn Italian do not buy this.
