"I find the Lonely Planet a very good source of information when travelling or researching a continent, and this is no exeption. BUT, there is a new edition being released in about 2 weeks (31 Jan. 2000), as you will see this edition is 1997, with all the shake up in Indonesia over the last few years you will appretiate the importance of a later edition. Having said this I ordered the old copy about a week ago, then found out about the new edition, and Amazon have no problem in ordering me the new copy, and me returning my old one. This is really just to save you the hassel too!" This book has fantastic information on Indonesia Islands, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation Villa in Indonesia Islands.

"This is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible. Do you own research and talk to other travellers. Since LP Indo is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Also, bus/boat schedules always change. So don't plan a rigid itinerary based on the data in this book. I know a couple that lost a week because they planned a trip around a ferry described in this book but didn't actually exist! Be prepared to wait if you're going off the beaten path. Some boat services are infrequent between the islands.

Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps bargaining. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better." A wealth of information about Indonesia Islands, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vacation Vacation property in Indonesia Islands.

I just used it in august of 2003 and all the prices are way off. Expect to pay about 2-3 times (sometimes 5-6 times) what the guide says because Indonesia's economy has picked up since the book has been released. For example: Borobudur is listed as 10,000Rp (~$1.80CDN) for entrance in the guidebook, now it's 58,000Rp (~$10CDN). They should be putting out a new one soon so if you can, wait for the next one to come out." "While the first edition was very good, the 2nd one was updated by completely omitting one of the 8 major regions of the country (Maluku) just because there was some political trouble there around 1999-2000 (well over by the time this edition actually got published) - it is now worse than the Lonely Planet guide which, in its much improved new edition, does cover the entire country." Before renting a Holiday Cottage in Indonesia Islands, I would read this book.

"I should have known once I looked at the first map and Vietnam was mislabelled as "China". Poor editing, unreliabale information, inconsistently updated. I chose this guidebook because it was recently published (Feb '03) - MISTAKE! For instance, some prices were up-to-date and some were out by a factor of 5 (if the prices were consistently low it would have been easier). Dates were wrong, telephone numbers quoted had changed in early 1990's, hotel listed were in the wrong towns, maps were difficult to follow. I have travelled with Rough Guides before, so I hope this is an exception, but DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO TRAVEL WITH THIS GUIDEBOOK." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Indonesia Islands. "(The title of the book I read is "the Sunday Smuggler". I belive it was published under 2 different names.) I COULD NOT put this fucking book down! I finished it in less than 2 days. It's extremely intense. I want to know more though. What happened to the guy "Doggie" who mysteriously was released in the begining? And why did Russell(christopher) get a Presidential Pardon? What facts surfaced that allowed him to go free? I want to know more about his ties with Amnesty International, and why they didnt/couldnt do more? I also would have liked more focus or discussion about him being wrongfully charged, why his wife didnt go down too? Wouldnt she have been considered a partner? What has been done either by the author or others to remedie some of the situation in foriegn prisons since the writing of this book? Questions aside, this is an amazing book." "The jacket and online reviews I've read simply don't do justice to this author. The brutality and horror of Indonesian prisons comprises about 20% of the book, with the rest an entertaining and often hilarious testimony to bawdy Aussie humour, the author's indefatigable spirit, sense of fun, and ability to get one over on his captors.

Cherish the early chapter when, awaiting trial, he tries to act insane by competing with the other imbecile inmates, and later, when facing a beating from the guards, he scatters them by throwing his own excrement at them, to the hilarity of his fellow captives.

The things that happened to this man are incredible, my advice to everyone is to read this book before venturing OS and be very careful of whom you are travelling with. To be locked up for something you didn't do is unimaginable. I now have some sort of insight into what it would be like to be charged and proven guilty (albeit the wrong verdict) without a proper trial.
