"I found this guide extremely useful for my short visit to Hong Kong and Macau on March 2002. However, I have to rate it with only 4 stars as the information was slightly outdated. This is of course a consequence of the two cities changing so rapidly in the last three years since this edition was first put on sale.
This is my first experience with a "Rough Guide" (I usually used the Michelin Green Guides where available) and I think I will consider these guides again for my next destination. One thing that I missed from the Rough Guide was some fotographs of the main places recommended for a visit. That would have been very useful in deciding what to visit and helpful to find the recommended attractions." If you are thinking about renting a Vacation Houses in Hong Kong, I would buy this book to take with you while in Hong Kong.

"I found this book very misleading in places. The maps should not be relied on as they can send you in the wrong direction. Some of the areas have very little information i.e. north point. Finding resturants with this book is quite hard. On the plus side there are some very good tips i.e. get an octopus card on arrival. It gives good advice on getting places i.e. Lantau Island (the big seated buddha) and for advice on transport it is very usefull. Most of the time if I needed information on where I was it came up with a few don't miss this sugestions. I would say: take this book along for advice, keep it with you when traveling... but don't really on it entirely: take along a second guide book and a better map for backup." "If you've bought a city guide to slip into your pocket whilst sightseeing, you might like to consider getting this book for a heavier and more comprehensive look at your destination. I remain amazed by the sheer volume of facts and detail which is crammed into the LP guides. Yet, a degree of caution is advised in consuming what is offered. Like any continually updated and upgraded guidebook, there are inaccuracies and I don't agree with some of the opinions offered on the merits or otherwise of parts of Hong Kong. "Steve Fallon is a perfect guide for walking tours, itinaries, transport (Octopus card), accomodation, eating and shopping in both ancient Western colonies.
He gives us also an excellent summary of their histories.
This guide has also a useful map section, although it was not possible to indicate all the street names.
With its wealth of practical, cultural and historical information, this guide is a necessary companion for all Hong Kong and Macau visitors. It served me every day during my stay in both Western enclaves. I found Hong Kong fascinating. I was there for the 2004 Film Festival which had an excellent program (especially the documentaries) and a perfect organization.
On the contrary, Macau was a big disappointment. It is still in shambles." This book has best information on Hong Kong, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation Villa in Hong Kong.

"The LP map of Hong Kong is a great help to me. It gives both an overview of the SAR territory including how to reach the outlying islands and a detailed plan of Hong Kong and Kowloon. "This is a nice map (actually set of maps of tourist areas and overview), but is is essentially the same as the maps that come inside the Lonely Planet Hong Kong condensed guidebook (inside the front and back covers). "I bought this map expecting a street map for the whole of Hong Kong, as I will be moving there in the near future. The map only shows streets & tourist attractions for Kowloon, Central, Wan Chai & Causeway Bay. It doesnt cover the west, east or south side of Hong Kong Island at all, so is of very little use to me.

The roads, shopping malls & tourist attractions are clearly laid out, and the map is laminated so would be durable (although you can't write on it). It also contains a walking tour and a list of emergency phone numbers. So, a good map for the tourist areas, but not a comprehensive map of Hong Kong." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Hong Kong. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Holiday Property in Hong Kong.

"This guide has some useful information on places to visit and sights to see, but for someone travelling on a budget, it not too helpful. All the advice on where to stay is for hotels (many over HK$1000) and not hostels or cheaper accommodation. However, I did visit a couple of restaurants recommended and they were very good, but this guide is best suited for families or people visiting Hong Kong on business." "I found the guide to be quite good and conveniently compact. My one criticism is that information for a given area is in several different places in the book. For example, there is a section on Wan Chai as a tour, another for Wan Chai at night, another section under excursions, and then Wan Chai restaurants are listed in a fourth section, altho some are included in the previous sections. This made for a lot of page flipping back and forth. This should all be consolidated into one section on Wan Chai. I thought the info was very good, just a lot of page flipping ("Now, where did I see that?")" It contains a very large amount of carefully researched detail, which enables the reader to feel that they were there watching. My father was taken prisoner there and as an account of the days of battle, with its minute detail referring to places and people I found it fascinating. Well referenced and indexed it really is the best cover of the subject.
