"It was worth having both the Guatemala Lonely Planet Book and the Rough Guide as reference as both covered different points. The Lonely Plant was excellent for accomadation and travel and the Rough Guide was great for information on a particular place. It was great having the Guatemala Lonely Plant book which also covered Yucatan and Belsize which was ideal for our trip. Well done Lonely Planet on a wonderful guide to such an interesting part of Central America. Worth it!!" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Guatemala. "If you are familiar with the Lonley Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the travler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded travler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" fun book!" If you are thinking about renting a Holiday Properties in Guatemala, I would buy this book to take with you while in Guatemala.

"was sad to have this guide stolen on a bus in mexico. one of the best guide book i have used. the insight to mayan culture glyphs ect could be increased as it leaves you hungry for information, but this is obviously a plus point in some ways as well.
worst point is for eating out, and is definately the most innacurate part of the book, many restaurants having gone long before or apparently having never existed.

"The book is an excellent introduction to the Mayan civilisation and the area that they inhabited. The book provides a sizeable amount of accurate and helpful information on all aspects relevant to the independent traveller. It has very good information on getting to and from each destination and accurate descriptions of places to stay. The text is enjoyable to read, well set out, contains some funny anecdotes and is not too bulky. The book is comparable to "Mexico and Central America" from the Footprint series. The Footprint book is bigger and would suit people travelling the whole of mexico, not just the south. Both books are easy to read but "The Maya World" is set out better as the text is less cramped. "We took the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet to Guatemala in March 2002, and found the RG generally more comprehensive, useful and accurate. The maps in both guides were pretty good, though a few more in colour would be benefical.

Where the Rough Guide really excelled was the sheer amount of well-researched background information - Guatemala is a fascinating but complicated country and there were very readable sections about the ancient Maya, environment and human rights." Once we were in Guatemala, I found that most of the places recommended were like the writer had not checked them himself or just written from what he had heard. "My wife and I went to Guatemala in May of 2002. This is the only guide book we used and we were quite happy with it. In addition to information about various things to do (content was good and accurate) this book contains a lot of great extra information in the back such as chronology of the Maya, recent political history, explanations of indigenous culture, and recommended reading lists. Wow! The listing of hotels and places to eat was on target. The book has a pretty good section on Tikal too." This book has wonderfull information about Guatemala. "I have been traveling around the world for a while and this is the worst guide book I have ever used. The maps are inadequate. The information is far from complete. The descriptions seem to be more political propaganda than a picture of Central America. This book tells you what to think instead of letting you know what to expect. "A friend lent this book to me whilst I was travelling the Maya trail. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy it once back in England.
The story follows the travels of Ronald Wright starting in Belize, then taking a circular route through the Yucatan and Chiapas areas of Mexico, and Guatamala.
Along the way, the author describes the people he meets, the local customs, and the often turbulent history. There is plenty of detail about the Mayan buildings and their complex constructions of calenders and measures of time.
