"I bought this book a year ago now and found it pretty poor! I've been to finland 10 or more times and feel I know the country and its people a lot more than the author of this book!
His descriptions of Finnish attitudes and temproment are so stereotyped and dated. Fascinating Museums, Buildings and Shops do not seem to feature! I can not comprehend how some one could produce this kind of book, about such a fascinating and unique place! Finland is a dynamic vibrant and varied place and has a lot more to offer than this guide would suggest! Its a real dissapointment, it does however carry some useful logistical info, trains, hotels/ hostels ect. But most of this info can be found on the net or from the many Tourist Infomation Offices in Finland. I do hope he's done some home work for this edition!" If you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartments in Finland, I would buy this book to take with you while in Finland.

"I visited this country with my Finnish boyfriend in 2002. THe book was a great help. It helped me decide which tourist spots, shopping areas, historical sites and places of interest to check out. The only part that I didn't like was that it didn't touch too much on the smaller cities of Finland, but in general, it's a good buy. Definitely worth it, but make sure you get "Culture Shock, Guide to Finland" if you do travel to Suomi. "I've just been to Helsinki for a few days, and although I didn't get the chance to test this book's usefulness in other parts of the country, it certainly proved worth having just for Helsinki. It tells you all the basic stuff, and some of the interesting stuff. I was able to get from the airport by bus and walk to my hotel from the bus station simply by glancing at the book on the flight to Helsinki. Everything is very clear and nicely laid out, and it's a handy size too. I hope I'll return to Finland; this is the first thing I'll pack." After I finished reading this, I made my Finnish husband read it, and he has been laughing out loud at his own nation. I personally agree with 90% of the author's views, but I must say I would never describe Finnish summers as humid, and as for there not being a Finnish 'look' - well, I can spot a Finn a mile off!" This book was divided into nicely planned sections with a wonderful section dedicated to doing bussiness in the country. No book about Finland would be complete without the sauna chapter- and this book spares nothing. It has been by far the best preparation book I've read. The only downfall is that it is written by a Brittish woman- but she makes both Bristtish and American comparisons whenever possible." "This book gives you exactly what the title says: a short history of Finland. As such, it is a good introduction to the subject, and gives the novice reader a fair idea about the milestones of Finnish history.

To be clear, what this book doesn't give you is details of social history or in-depth study of the background to the events discussed. Because of its brevity, it is mainly focused on battles, treaties and other major events. I'd love to have seen what the author could have done had he had another 220 pages to write. The author goes all the way back to pre-history to explain the peculiarities and special character of the Finns. Given that it is so short, there should have been a little bit less about political machinations and the Left, and the space saved should have been used to say a little bit more about the military history, economics, culture, emigratin, etc. Also, the prose style, while readable, does not sparkle.
