| The Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"As with all the rough guides this was a fantastic help when we got in country. They could be easier to navigate though some of the sections seem to have been added as an after thought. In summary an excellent guide." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Dominican Republic. It would be so handy when you Rent a Vacation House in Dominican Republic. "We brought this and the Lonely Planet guide, the later generally being more accurate, particularly the maps. This was surprising because the Rough Guide was supposed to be newer. Overall though a good guidebook and enough to get you around the country to see a lot more than an all inclusive hotel and a beach." A wealth of information about Dominican Republic, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Dominican Republic. "If you're going to the Dominican Republic you've got to use this book. I brought four different books with me on my trip to the Dominican Republic and this was the one that I found was by far the most accurate. It had great, honest coverage of the all-inclusive hotels, comprehensive coverage of all the major tourism areas, like Santo Domingo's colonial district, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Cabarete etc. But what was most helpful were the terrific recommendations for sights to see that weren't in any other guidebook. My husband and I were able to explore Taino caves that have depictions of Christopher Columbus' three ships. These caves were in the middle of a wilderness national park and no other guide book even knew that they existed. Also by far the best restaurant and bar recommendations. Highly recommended." Before renting a Holiday Casa in Dominican Republic, I would read this book. "If you're going to the Dominican Republic you've got to use this book. Before renting a Alternative Holiday Property in Dominican Republic, I would read this book. "My husband and I used this book and the Lonely Planet guide on our 3 week trip to the DR. We traveled extremely cheap, taking the public transportation (mostly riding in the back of pickup trucks) all over the island. We found that the Rough Guide had more inexpensive hotels listed than the Lonely Planet. I think that Lonely Planet is so popular that once a hotel is published in an LP guide, demand goes up and prices do too. We also looked for the "Christopher Columbus" Taino cave drawings listed in the book, but even the locals couldn't find them! (We did get to visit 3 or 4 cool caves on our quest though, and while we were disappointed about not seeing the drawings we did enjoy using a palm frond torch to explore a bat-filled cave.) While this book is not one for pictures, check out the LP at the library to decide what sites to visit and take this one with you for information on what hotels to stay at." Before renting a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Dominican Republic, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Dominican Republic. "I used this guide to travel in Santo Domingo, Costanza and Samana and found it to be very useful in trip planning. First of all, it helped me to identify Samana and Constanza as great places to visit without the heavy tourism. It was also packed with information on practically every town we passed on the way and offered good hotel and restaurant recommendations. My only criticism is that it seemed the author probably traveled by car and the information on public transportation wasn't quite as thorough as in Lonely Planet guides. However, the sheer volume of other information and the easy to use layout made up for that. Overall, a very solid guide for both pre-trip planning and travel within the DR." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vocation or Holiday in Dominican Republic. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Vocation or Holiday House in Dominican Republic. |

| Lonely Planet Dominican Republic and Haiti (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"This book falls short of Lonely Planet's reputation as a guidebook forbudget-minded independent travellers. We used it to go to DR in Feb 2004.Time and again it gave the expensive "easy" options first (book a tour, take a private taxi) and either ignored or barely mentioned the cheaper, independent alternative (arranging things yourself and using publictransport). The three week "things to do" includes one week in anall-inclusive resort! Be warned that some of the dive schools listed haveclosed. That said, DR was a beautiful place to go on holiday." Before renting a Holiday Villa in Dominican Republic, I would read this book. "A thorough guide to the whole of Hispaniola. We only travelled in DR but this was more accuarte than the Rough Guide we also had. There were a few errors (things change I guess) but nothing major. Good maps and travel information. All you need to see the real Dominican Republic not the all-inclusive beach resorts most people stay at. Enjoy your trip!" Before renting a Alternative Vacation Villa in Dominican Republic, I would read this book. "A leader in travel guides, Lonely Plant once again proves it self as the leader in the industry with this excellent guide to traveling to/throughout the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Although Haiti's tourism industry is nearly nonexistent, the guide still provides the readers with information on attractions, accommodations, and safety issues. In covering the neighboring Dominican Republic, the book provides much more information for this country which has seen a major boom in its' tourism industry since the late 1980s. Always informative with tidbits if information, history, maps, and information for singles and gay & lesbian travelers, the "Lonely Planet Dominican Republic and Haiti" is the best book for anyone planning a trip to the island of Hispaniola. Excellent guide for an excellent price." This book has wonderfull information on Dominican Republic, well worth reading if you renting a Alternative Holiday Casa in Dominican Republic. "This book is a well written book that I really enjoyed. Even though at times I felt the book was a bit negative on some issues, over all it's great. It clearly post the different points of interests, restaurants, accommodations across the Dominican Republic. It gives some good detailed history of the country. I don't think the book did as good of a job with the Haiti section but the Dominican Republic section is stellar. Anyone travelling to the D.R. should not leave prior to buying this book!" Before renting a Vacation Property in Dominican Republic, I would read this book while in Dominican Republic. "This guide reads like the authors spent a couple of weeks in the D.R. Some major towns, like La Vega, don't even merit a hotel recommendation. A pretty bad guide. Avoid it." A wealth of information about Dominican Republic, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vacation Vacation property in Dominican Republic. |

| Forest of Visions: Ayahuasca, Amazonian Spirituality, and the Santo Daime Tradition (Book)Customer Rating: Part biography, part document of spiritual wisdom, Forest of Visions is a fascinating story that satisfies on many levels. Author Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during military rule in Brazil. Here he recounts his spiritual transformation after release under the tutelage of Padrinho Sebastião Mota de Mela, one of the founders of the Santo Daime religion. Forest of Visions is also a study of the inner workings of the Santo Daime utopian community of 500 in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The Santo Daime is a Christian-indigenous syncretic religion that centers around the drinking of a sacramental psychedelic tea called Ayahuasca as a shortcut to spiritual revelation and growth. After years of study, the Brazilian government decided that Ayahuasca positively benefited society and church members, and declared it legal. Approximately 50 Santo Daime churches now exist around the world, including in the U.S., Japan, and Holland, with various legal statures. The forward by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway, and the preface by Jonathan Goldman provide an informative transition from our world to the realm of this mysterious and unique Amazonian cult. --P. "Sorry to use this space to talk. Your daughter is with good and experienced people and I'm sure is very well cared for. I will try to send word to have them contact you with more news. Please take heart, I am sure she will be fine." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Holiday in Dominican Republic. "There is much on the internet about Santo Daime, almost none of which accurately portrays the church or the religious and spiritual significance of the Daime. This book, however, is a deep discussion of the church, the doctrine and the Daime which offers a clear picture from a man who has traveled far on the spiritual path of the Santo Daime. Interested people, please read this book before reading anything else." Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Dominican Republic, I would read this book while in Dominican Republic. Please, can you get a message to him for me. Her name is Tammi Morgues. I need news-have no way of getting it-I understand the phone there is broken and she is too weak and bed-ridden..Please" Relax with this book when on Alternative Vacation in Dominican Republic. It would be so handy when you Rent a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Dominican Republic. "I really wanted to find out about the Santo Daime movement, and while this book has a lot of information, there is just way too much of the very mental ramblings of the author. | Ron Santo: For Love of Ivy - The Autobiography of Ron Santo (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"I love Ron Santo...and although I have a phobia of ballplayer autobiographies, I figured out of respect for the man, and because I thought maybe, just maybe, this one would break the mold of politically correct, sacchrine-sweet memiors typically put out there from the jock-ocracy. I have more respect for him than ever, especially when he chronicles his struggles with diabetes, and the self-diagnosis he must go through every day to monitor his health. This is a must read for Cubs fans, and for people who need another story of a courageous battle against diabetes. Most other target audiences will probably choose to pass on this." Before renting a Alternative Holiday Cottage in Dominican Republic, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Dominican Republic. "Excellent autobiography for baseball fans in general and Chicago Cubs fans in particular. Ron Santo was signed by the Cubs in 1958 at the age of 18. Prior to reporting to the Cubs, he learned he had diabetes. This book tells of playing with baseball greats such as Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ferguson Jenkins, and Leo Durocher. And the 1969 Chicago Cubs. The book is also inspirational in Santo's perseverance against diabetes and the potential devastating effects of the disease at that time. Santo tested himself and put himself to the limits to control his diabetes. The book is a very good read and should appeal to any baseball fan. Also, good read for younger players, high school and up, as Santo played the game to its fullest with class, and continues to approach other aspects of life the same." A wealth of information about Dominican Republic, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Vacation Vacation property in Dominican Republic. "The greatest third baseman ever to play the game and the fact that a trousersnake like Joe Morgan is helping to keep him out of the HOF is a crying shame. Ron Santo is what courage is all about and an inspiration to anyone on this big blus ball we call earth. I first became a fan of Ronnie's in 1998 because I would listen to all of the Cubs games on the radio with him and Virgil Patrick Hughes. I had a job selling tickets at BZ and didn't have a tele to watch Chip and Stone on the TV. Anyway Santo is the best. The CUbs should have retired his number long ago. Long live Ron Santo and the CUbs...two winners!" www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Cottage to Rent in Dominican Republic. "Ron Santo has better numbers than most of the third basemen in the Hall of Fame. Anything but a minor star, this quiet, self-effacing hero had the misfortune never to play for a champion (he's most closely identified with the 1969 Cubs, often called "the greatest team never to win a pennant). As a result, he's never gotten the recognition he deserves- including election to the Hall, despite outclassing several of the third basemen there. Santo accomplished his feats despite an ongoing battle with diabetes which eventually cost him both legs. He's most appreciated, to be sure, in Chicago, where the Cubs at long last retired his number this year. His story is an inspiration to all of us who labor under the burden of far lesser disadvantages and accomplish far less. This is the autobiography of a true hero. To read it is to be inspired."
