"Whilst I've been in the habit of buying the Rough Guide to Prague for every visit to the city since 1993 I have to say that the latest edition is now in great need of updating - especially where the restaurants section is concerned. Although understandably, eating and drinking in Prague will always be a changable entity - you should take the reviews (particularly with regards to prices) with a pinch of salt!! "A well-written book, with a clear and easy layout. It successfully pointed us away from the crowds (in late March!!) to sights we would otherwise have overlooked. There was much-appreciated detail, without the book getting too thick. The small section on language was useful, although the advice on pronunciation did not match the advice of the locals I consulted.

All round, a very good guidebook, which should meet the needs of visitors who want to see the sights of a beautiful city and who don't just want to stick to the well-trodden path of the castle, the old town square and Wenceslas Square.

One caution - one recommended restaurant we went to had jumped from the cheap price range to the expensive. The food was excellent and we were pleased to have gone there, but it pays to check the menu first if your budget is tight!" This ones no exception - the book is clear and informative, divided into easy to read sections, and the maps are very handy. The warnings about pickpockets and cheating taxi drivers may be out of date as I suspect the authorities have got it under control a bit, as I saw neither of these. I did find my hotel to be right in the middle of the red light district but that’s another story (and yes, it turns out the book knew about that as well!!)

We also took along the Eye Witness guide when we went to major spots -- Prague Castle, Charles Bridge -- because it had more pictures.

"This book is chock full of details, with history and facts impressively presented for sights throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia, places small and large. The dense pages are hard to navigate as they are formatted, making it difficult to find information quickly. Also, the author seems to have traveled by car and the book lacks practical information on public transportation, such as how long it takes to travel from one place to another and how much bus or train tickets cost. This book will provide you with great background information once you are already there, but for practical trip planning, I found I needed to refer to the Lonely Planet." "My continued use of lonely planet guides is indicative of the quality I find. It is an excellent guide for us. We travel by car and lp is a plus for us as we can get to more remote area. It was right on target with the Czech & Slovak Rep guide. We found a wonderful place to visit and stay called Telc with their recommendation. My only criticism is that the binding did not hold up and the book came loose from it. It was difficult to turn pages because of occasional pages becoming loose."
