| The Rough Guide to Cyprus (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"What a great investment. The book was our constant guide while preparing the trip and then exploring the Northern part of the island. The accuracy of the maps was stunning and most tips/recommendations can only be endorsed! Really good value for money. Great job by the author!!" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vocation or Holiday in Cyprus. It would be so usefull when you Rent a Vocation or Holiday Villa in Cyprus. "I have lived in Cyprus for three years and work as a British diplomat on the island. The best thing for me about this guide is the excellent contexts section which has the only accurate and incisive history section of any guide to Cyprus I have seen. The guide has not failed me in three years of visiting Cyprus' delights in either its recommendations or its information, although I should probably now write in with my personal favourites that the author has not yet found. I usually go travelling with either a Lonely Planet or a Rough Guide. I have both for Cyprus, but the Rough Guide is far far better than the LP." If you are thinking about renting a Alternative Holiday Properties in Cyprus, I would buy this book to take with you while in Cyprus. "I bought The Rough Guide to Cyprus and the Blue Guide Cyprus at the same time. I've had the chance to live on Cyprus for about a year so I've had time to read both and compare what they say with my experience of the island. And the result is that I highly recommend this book. It has well written and fairly detailed sections pertaining to the islands history and culture. Each region of Cyprus is dealt with in reasonable detail. Additionally, the book does not shy away from the difficult political and social issues that vex Cyprus, and in my opinion is even handed in assigning blame and praise (there is plenty to go around!). I didn't feel at all like one of the other reviewers, that the author disliked Cyprus. Cyprus is a bit of a difficulty as well as a bit of paradise - in fact, it's history and current reality are quite heart rending to grasp. But there is still much to appreciate. This book has been invaluable to me." Before renting a Alternative Vacation Villa in Cyprus, I would read this book while in Cyprus. "I bought this guide for the summer I am spending in cyprus. The author clearly didnt like the island: his description of most things are tainted with a negativity and he clearly didnt get beyond the tourist traps. He fails to include essential information, like phone numbers anda proper listing of hotels. If I had stuck with the book I never would have discovered the wonderful things that the island has to offer. If you cant find a good book, rather look at online sites (like gonomad.com has great info)." A wealth of information about Cyprus, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Holiday Holiday property in Cyprus. "I used the Rough Guide last spring when I traveled independently to Cyprus from Israel. I found it to be very comprehensive and accurate. There are lots of maps, phone numbers and other useful info. It is great for someone wanting the nitty-gritty details of how to get around and how much money to bring. I especially appreciated the suggestions for good low-budget accomodations." This book has great information on Cyprus, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation House in Cyprus. |

| Lonely Planet Cyprus (Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"An excellent guide providing the reader with essential places to visit in the republic and the north, includes recommendations for places to eat and be entertained. The book also has a section providing you with background information on Cyprus and is clearly written by someone with a love for the country. Highly recommended and perfect for planning a trip to this beautiful island." Before renting a Holiday House in Cyprus, I would read this book. "If your travelling to Cyprus and do not leave until you have read this book. It describes Cyprus in so much detail you will never be stuck for that information you require. Maps, 100% detail on the country and much more more. A true guide for the Cyprus Visitor." Before renting a Holiday Property in Cyprus, I would read this book. "Lonely PLanet makes fine books but this is NOT one of them. I have toured the island several times and apparently the author and I have not been to the same places. Or rather the writer merely went as far as the nearest tourist office and copied the local brochures. I found his descriptions of all of the historical sites inaccurate -- museums the size of 10 x 10 room are described as "large" and worth half a day; sites are described as "near the village" when they are right in the middle -- hence the author was never there. The language glossary doesn't even include "Please, Thank You or Excuse Me." BUY another Cyprus book" Before renting a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Cyprus, I would read this book while in Cyprus. "This is an excellent guide book to the island. However, contrary to the previous reviewer's comments there are many other guide books to Cyprus, some of them quite fine - and Amazon sells them too. The Rough Guide is also excellent." If you are thinking about renting a Vocation or Holiday Cottages in Cyprus, I would buy this book to take with you while in Cyprus. "You can't go to Cyprus without the Lonely Planet Cyprus (Travel Survival Kit) by Paul Hellander. It is literally the only travel book in English on this part of the world! Though part of the ancient world and visited by such luminaries as the Apostle Paul, almost nothing is written today in the guidebook area except this! Used books? None. New books? Try to find them. About all you can find are political analyses of Cyprus and its recent past. While many books exist on the Carribean, few exist on the Mediterranean! There are books on the Greek Isles, but not Cyprus. Thank you Lonely Planet for this guide book. It is like gold for the tourist to Cyprus!" Before renting a Vacation Apartment in Cyprus, I would read this book. |

| Northern Cyprus (Landmark Visitors Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"After many years of wanting to visit Northern Cyprus, we bought this book to see what the Turkish side of the country would have to offer us. We found it has all you need to know before visiting this lovely country. Northern Cyprus has so much to offer the traveller, it's history, wildlife, flora & fauna etc. The list is too long. All the historic sites are accompanied by full colour photographs. Kristina Gursoy & Lavinia Neville Smith have captured the whole beauty of the country and its people which make this book a very interesting read. Whilst there we used this book as our guide for the numerous places we visited and found it to be invaluable. Northern Cyprus is certainly as it is described, 'A corner of earth touched by heaven'. This book is a must for the future traveller." Before renting a Holiday Casa in Cyprus, I would read this book. |

| Landscapes of Cyprus (Sunflower Landscapes S.) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Just returned from Cyprus; wonderful place, great hospitality and terrific April weather. The holiday was completely made by our ability to walk using the Landscapes walking guide. This blue book has always had good press, but this is the first time I've used it in Cyprus. We had the latest update, since there is a new edition about to hit the shops, and the update gave us the latest jizz on all the places to visit. Troodos walks are sensational, but the walks in the area north of Paphos are fantastic. We stayed at Kathikas, and the update gave us info on new walks about to appear in the new edition in this area. Wonderful - every farmer we saw wanted to give us fruit from his groves. We'll certainly be back; and we'll never go without our little blue book!" A wealth of information about Cyprus, a great book if you are thinking about renting a Alternative Vacation Alternative Vacation property in Cyprus. "This is the fifth Sunflower Guide I have used but it seems to be the one which has given the most problems with route-finding. perhaps this is due to the speed of development in Cyprus and the changes in road/track types. A compass was certainly useful on three of the five walks we attempted." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Apartment to Rent in Cyprus. "The book is an invaluble guide for keen walkers. The walks are graded with several options for taking shorter or circular routes. Having complete 5 out of the 28 i can state that the directions are well written and the times given fairly accurate. I do advise carrying a compass to check on your directions as sometimes the maps are short on detail. There are also several good car tours included which will give the visitor plenty of options for days out." Relax with this book when on Alternative Vacation in Cyprus. It would be so handy when you Rent a Alternative Vacation House in Cyprus. |

| The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"I remember the Turkish paratroops invading and know a bit about Cyprus, and visitied. If you're like me, you'll find this book a gripping read. The events leading up to the 1974 invasion are told with absolute clarity and brevity. The revelations are fascinating and plausible. Perhaps the book leans towards the Turkish position but it accounts for all sides of the story. It does not over-speculate but keeps to the facts, many relating to the invasion are newly uncovered. Still very relevant and a fascinating insight into global politices" Before renting a Alternative Vacation Casa in Cyprus, I would read this book. "Cyprus, a beautiful small island has always been the victim of its strategic geographical location on the international political scene, while this works to its advantage on the economic side. If ever the two factors ever find their equilibrium the people of the island irrespective of national, cultural, religious and other differences will prosper. The detailed analysis of events and plots are ecellent. At the end of the day one realizes that it is the prevailing peripheral circumstances and interests that really dictate the fortunes of the core. It is a great piece of work. I thought I knew a few things about the Cyprus problem until a read this book." This book has supper information on Cyprus, well worth reading if you renting a Vacation Cottage in Cyprus. "The book does provide a good geo-political background to the origins of the Cyprus "problem". What it does not provide though is enough scrutiny of the Greek Military Junta's (in power during the early 1970's)ambitions and overthrow of the Greek Cypriot leader Makarios in the summer of 1974, and the corresponding atrocities communited upon the weak Turkish Cypriot peasant minorities. By focusing on the geo-political, the book exhonorates the guilty - i.e. the ENOSIS terrorists who brought misery to the island. More local (Cyprus-based) research was needed rather than a library-based, politically-motivated effort -which this is." Relax with this book when on Vacation in Cyprus. It would be so handy when you Rent a Vacation Apartment in Cyprus. "I purchased this book in Northern Cyprus and read it there. The conspiracy theory the authors try to promote is not at all convincing and, not only that, may even be insidiously deceiving. While they try to link the US and Turkey together in a conspiracy to secure Cyprus as a paradise of spying activity for the US during the cold war, the book seems to purposely downplay the role of Archbishop Makarios, the Orthodox Church and Grivas as the real generators of the ethnic cleansing of Turkish Cypriots that eventually did occur. Had not Turkey "invaded", the Turkish Cypriots would have been slaughtered. So if you look at Turkey's "invasion" as a liberation (or even somewhere in between), the notion of a conspiracy between the US and Turkey here, even though there were obvious alliances, does'nt even begin to hold water, as the authors are trying to suggest, as the cause of the Cyprus problem." Relax with this book when on Holiday in Cyprus. It would be so handy when you Rent a Holiday Apartment in Cyprus. "On Reading the book, I of course still have many questions that are unanswered and probably will be until the powers that be decide that we (The Genereal Public) are mature enough to handle the truth. In reality it will probably never come to pass that all the facts are revealed, but what is clear is that the people of Cyprus were used and deceived by unscrupulous individuals with a personal agenda and the Cypriots as a whole are still suffering the consequences to this day." Before renting a Alternative Holiday Casa in Cyprus, I would read this book. |

| Hostage to History: Cyprus from the Ottomans to Kissinger (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"C. Hitchens' approach is simplistic and deja-vu: The bad Junta tried to overthrow the good Archbishop and Turkey seized the opportunity. He does not consider the Archbishop's share in the responsibility for the Cyprus debacle. The historical context of tension between the Makarios and all Greek governments (including that of George Papandreou, who in the 1960s sought to overthrow Makarios) is simply ingored. Hitchens does not mention that the Byzantine Archbishop virtually provoked the '74 coup by demanding a withdrawal of the Greek National Guard from Cyprus. He hushes the fact that Makarios all but invited Turkey to invade Cyprus in his speech at the UN Security Council on the eve of the first invasion. In his speech, Makarios offered Ecevit a sound legal alibi for his so-called "peace mission" in Cyprus. In Hitchens' highly unattractive and manichaeistic world, Archbishop Makarios - a chief protagonist Cyprus tragedy - remains a holy cow beyond criticism." Before renting a Vacation Cottage in Cyprus, I would read this book while in Cyprus. "While I admire Hitchens simply for bothering to write the book in the first place (the rest of the world has either forgotten about us or doesn't care) he fails to make any real impact. Yes, he documents very well the role of the superpowers and their desire to see Cyprus partitioned. But he tends to overlook the expansionist nature of Turkey : What of the countless massacres of Greeks, Armenians, Kurds (and, quite often, their own citizens) by the Turks, be it during the Ottoman period or today by the secular Turkish state ? Instead we are given a very narrow synopsis involving Kissinger, the Soviets and a few demented Greek generals. What we see in Cyprus is simply history repeating itself: slow shrinking of Orthodox Christianity and Hellenic culture as a result of Western-sanctioned Turkish aggression. The rest is just detail." Before renting a Alternative Vacation Villa in Cyprus, I would read this book while in Cyprus. "Aw, the poor blameless Greeks...victims after all, give me a break! These two countries have been either fighting or kissing for centuries! It seems to me the Western world is just falling into the same old trap of "if their Chirstian, they must be okay" syndrome. We all forget how powerful the Greek empire was, and why is it from the hundreds of Greeks and Turks I know drop the hatred of each other as soon as they step onto american soil? COMMON GROUND...set Cyprus and it's people both Greek and Turk free...they'll do fine without their mother countries and all of us and our uninformed opinions....why is it anytime Turks are part of the subject of a book, even a cookbook, they are told how evil they are by the reviewers? This review should be about the book, not how much an reader hates other people...creepy..." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation House to Rent in Cyprus. |
