"Bought this book for my mother in law to take to Rio with her. She is studying portugease at present but it nervous to use it in sentences and out of the classroom, without her dictionery. Needless to say short conversations can take an age when you have to look up each word. "You don't want grammar in a phrase book! But this one is full of it. Nouns, adjectives, definite articles, indefinite articles, pronouns, subjects, objects, regular verbs, irregular verbs, double-stemmed verbs, you-name-it verbs. If I wanted a grammar, I would have bought one. You don't want grammar lessons in a phrase book. I find this amount of grammar in a phrase book quite out of place." Not enough vocabularly, not enough questions, not enough areas. After three weeks in Brasil, I managed to successfully use this book twice. It's cheap but it's not worth the purchase price." "This book attempts to cover the whole gamut of wildlife for the Amazon basin and Pananal. It can't do it; no book can. It did make an admirable attempt and as such is a great book for the tourist traveling to the area. On a recent trip north of Manaus, it covered 98% of the bird life. It is concise enough that the occaisional bird wathcer will be able to identify most birds. It is not quite as adequate for other species- fish are very superficial, as are reptiles. I would like to see these expanded. This is a terrific guide for the tourist- concise, adequately complete, and easy to use."
