"Seems that the Rough Guide team are trying to get a book out on every location without regard to their roots. I've always bought the Rough Guide for any holiday destination but this one was just full of lists with little extra value.

Very few useful hints were contained, when you land in Barbados, there are lots of free handouts, maps etc which make this book a waste of time.

"I bought this because the book touted itself as a way to find those out of the way places that the usual travel books don't tell you about.

I have read this book, and I learned nothing new -- no restaurants, accommodations, attractions, etc. that I hadn't known about already. So in this regard it was a disappointment.

However, it is a good basic primer about things Barbadian. There are, however, some good, detailed maps. It is also a "pocket" book, small in size, so you could easily bring it with you to Barbados and use as a reference.

However, I also read Harry P.'s book on Barbados. It is much more thorough and also pretty portable. In my opinion, if you need one book on Barbados, this one probably wouldn't be it." Coming to the "Complete Diving Guide" after the high standards of Globetrotter is something of a disappointment. There is nothing wrong with the book in terms of the content it is providing - it gives information on the sites, some (though by no means all) dive schools, and a little background on the islands. However, the writing style is very narrative - think "what I did on my diving holiday this summer" type essays. The presentation is also a bit dated. This is a journalistic rather than an academic work. O'Farrell is far from dispassionate about his subject, which in my view occasionally clouds his judgement; and he dwells a little too long occasionally on the details of brutality and cruelty. But it is his very passion which brings this history to light and life. A fascinating historical discovery for me." "If you grew up in a West Indian kitchen, if know any West Indian families well or if you have lived in the West Indies this book will appeal to you. (I use the term 'West Indies' as that is what the author calls the Caribbean, in particular Barbados). The recipes are wonderful and conjure up the true essence of the cookery, history and social scene in Barbados and the other islands. You would have to be brave to attempt most of the dishes (pigs trotters and tails) but the book doesn't really pretend to be a cookery book - rather a memoir about his childhood and young manhood with food in the foreground. "I did not find this book to be helpful in providing information specific to Barbados that I could not find in any free tourist booklet on the island. There is a whole page on "Beach Boys"... there are local men anywhere you may go on vacation that will try to pick up vacationing women. This is not information specific to Barbados. There is a whole page on "What to take": Shoes and socks, underwear,swimsuit,soap,sunscreen,comb,shaving kit,etc,etc. Please!!! I stayed at the Coconut Court Beach Resort which is one of the oldest and most respected family run hotels on the island and it is not even listed in the accomodation sections. I would save your money and pick up the multitude of free guides available on the island." "We really enjoyed ourselves in Barbados usiing this guide. Barbados is very compact, and the only town is the capitol city of Bridgetown which is OK but not the best place to hang out in. Thanks to this book we were able to travel to the east coast and visit the small village of Bathsheba, discover the natural areas to the north, and really appreciate what we were seeing. Also, the guide lists small bed and breakfasts and local restaurants. The websites listed were useful as well as the information we found on the publisher's website. We really recommend that you check out some of the natural areas such as Barclay's Park and Welchmans Gully. You should make your reservations before you go, because everywhere can be reached in a short period of time. Although all of the bus routes are listed in detail, we found it easier to rent a car." "I have travelled many times in Barbados over the last twenty or so years & have always struggled to find a quality map that includes "all" of the tracks as well as the main roads, this Map satisfies the need. Let's face it, road markings & signage in Barbados are poor to put it mildly, but with this map you should be able to find your way back when you get lost. Believe me, you will get lost especially on the east coast, but don't be put off it's a small but safe Island and this map will prove a valuable guide."
