| A Year of Russian Feasts (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Jones's memoir-cookbook takes the reader on a personal journey to Russia, the land of Jones's ancestors. It's full of interesting stories about the people she encountered there, with a focus on culinary topics. Each chapter deals with a single theme: springtime in Russia, tea and birthday parties, home-canning, mushroom hunting, weddings, Christmas and New Year's celebrations--all from the personal perspective of the author and her experiences in Russia. The 40 recipes she includes are accurate and can be easily reproduced in American home kitchens. A "must-buy" book for anyone interested in Russian cuisine." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in Russia. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Vacation Apartment in Russia. "I found this book very calming and reasuring in these troubled times. The book is a soothing escape from the exterior modern world to that of our culture, our food and our entertaining--no matter what our heritage. A great glimpse into the lives of everyday Russians through their food. The recipes are simply written with readily available ingredients. Steep a cup of tea, put your feet up and enjoy!" This book has wonderfull information on Russia, well worth reading if you buying a Alternative Holiday Apartment in Russia. "Catherine Chermeteff Jones' book perfectly captures the essence of Russian-ness that travellers, students and Russian enthusiasts the world-over, continue to fall hopelessly in love with... I am about to order more copies to send to friends and family; this is the perfect ambassador for the warmth, depth and comardeship that Russian culture has to offer. A fascinating and uniquely insightful portrayal of the Russian kitchen- its culinary delights and the art and ceremony that accompanies it." Before buying a Holiday House in Russia, I would read this book. "Catherine not only captures the essence of the food, but also gives us a most intimate glance into the country, it's culture, and it's people. Living there for a time and having a Russian mother (and grandmother) on hand has given her an edge that almost no one else can duplicate! Her descriptions are interesting, the recipes are clear and easy to follow, and the insights and traditions on the food are priceless, making it an absolute "must" for the serious "foodie."" | A Russian Journal (Penguin Modern Classics) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"If you really want to have an idea of what life was like in the USSR after the war (and later)and you like Steinbeck's style and Capa's photographs, you must read this humorous and honest reportage." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation Cottage to Buy in Russia. "This wonderfully written book takes you through post-war Soviet Union, to farms and cities devastated by war but struggling to return to normalcy. Robert Capa not only adds wonderful photos but his role in this story is both funny and illuminating for any Capa fans. Written in the late 1940s, the story provides us with a very human side of the Russian people. The openness and friendliness of everyone they meet contrasts with the paranoia and hatred so present in the US at that time. I read this as both a photographer and one who was recently in Russia and the insight provided was very enjoyable and educating. Capa's mannerisms and method of photography allowed his subjects to open up and feel comfortable in his lens -- not an easy thing since so many of the people had lost family and suffered terribly. Steinbeck's writing is honest, funny and his skills as a non-partisan reporter really shine in this work." If you are thinking about buying a Vacation Villas in Russia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Russia. "As the Cold War was begginning, John Steinbeck and Robert Capa had the idea to go to Russia and see what it was really like. This book is the account of their travel. But it has so much in it - fun, beauty, tragedy, hope, and the sense of bureaucracy - that you'll not only remember it: you'll want to pack your suitcase and go there immediatelly to find out if it still is like that!" Before buying a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Russia, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Russia. "This is a great road trip story . . . that just happens to be set in Russia (and elsewhere in the Soviet Union). It is an amusing and thoughtful account of Steinbeck's travels with his good friend Robert Capa. As Steinbeck often noted in his works of nonfiction, he recounts merely what he saw, which may or may not be reflective of the experiences of others. Thus this is far more a narrative about two men traveling together than it is a book about Russia. Steinbeck does not seek to unravel the mysteries of Russia; he merely wishes to take a peek behind the curtain to get a glimpse of how its inhabitants live. This is a very amusing, thoughtful and readable book - the best Steinbeck I've read." This book has great information about Russia. | A People's Tragedy: Russian Revolution, 1891-1924 (Book)Customer Rating: Written in a narrative style that captures both the scope and detail of the Russian revolution, Orlando Figes' history is certain to become one of the most important contemporary studies of Russia as it was at the beginning of the 20th century. With an almost cinematic eye, Figes captures the broad movements of war and revolution, never losing sight of the individuals whose lives make up his subject. He makes use of personal papers and personal histories to illustrate the effects the revolution wrought on a human scale, while providing a convincing and detailed understanding of the role of workers, peasants, and soldiers in the revolution. He moves deftly from topics such as the grand social forces and mass movements that made up the revolution to profiles of key personalities and representative characters. Figes' themes of the Russian revolution as a tragedy for the Russian people as a whole and for the millions of individuals who lost their lives to the brutal forces it unleashed make sense of events for a new generation of students of Russian history. Sympathy for the charismatic leaders and ideological theorising regarding Hegelian dialectics and Marxist economics--two hallmarks of much earlier writing on the Russian revolution--are banished from these clear-eyed, fair-minded pages of A People's Tragedy. The author's sympathy is squarely with the Russian people. That commitment, together with the benefit of historical hindsight, provides a standpoint Figes can take full advantage of in this masterful history. Reviews:
"Having already read "Natasha's Dance", "A People's Tragedy" had a lot to live up to - it did. In this superb book, Figes describes the social forces and events that led to, then ruined, the democratic revolution in Russia. The book achieves a rare balance between the stories of the great personalities who helped shape the revolution, and the lives of the common people who felt its effects. He is even-handed, taking to task both left- and rightist interpretations of the revolution and the motivations of those involved; it is this impartiality that condemns both the old tsarist regime and the new Bolshevik dictatorship. "A People's Tragedy" is long, but is an enthralling, if grim, read throughout." A wealth of information about Russia, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in Russia. "Very good one volume history of Russia from pre-revolution to post-revolution times. Figes tells the story of revolutionary Russia from a late 20th century perspective relying on fact without an overly 'leftist' or 'rightist' bias. Anyone calling this a 'rightist' history criticising the Bolsheviks has clearly failed to grasp the horrendous state of the Russian nation post 1917. Why only 4 stars? Figes lets himself down slightly with the title - 1891-1924. In truth, this book finishes at the end of the Civil War in 1920/21 and glosses over the post-Civil War famines and economic reforms in too little detail, with little attention paid to the rise of Stalin in the party structure. An extra 100 pages to fatten out these themes would have been appreciated." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vocation or Holiday in Russia. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Russia. "an amazing book that delves into every aspect of Russian life during the most eventful period in its history. Utilizing documents and evidence both new and old Figes provides a thoroughly enjoyable read that moves both the heart and mind." | Russia's War (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"The titanic struggle of the Soviet Union against Hitler's invasion is a tale written in pain. Over 20 million were to die, a figure which surpasses comprehension. Overy provides a masterly account of the invasion, the struggle for survival, and the eventual victory. War on such a vast scale would require many tomes to describe it, but Overy's work is a superb overview for anyone wishing to learn about the war or begin its study." If you are thinking about buying a Alternative Vacation Apartments in Russia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Russia. "This book is superb. It really tells the story of the German-Soviet part of World War II without being too long or too dry. It was interesting and easy to read. It is told from the Russian perspective, which is refreshing. I agree that the before and after parts of this book are invaluable in setting the stage and in putting the conflict into perspective. A must-read for anyone interested in WW2 history." Before buying a Holiday Cottage in Russia, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Russia. "This full of facts book tells the story of Soviet Russia as never told before. With an objective view the writer tries to understand the Soviet leaders' motives for acting the way they did i.e.Winter War against Finland. Also the writer destroys the myth that the Nazis were beaten by irresponsible commanding of Hitler, or by late summer campaigns or hard winter conditions. The Soviet people's selfless sacrifice, developed year by year and eventually destroyed the mighty Nazi war machine." If you are thinking about buying a Vacation Houses in Russia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Russia. "This is an awesome book describing how Russia won the Soviet war effort against the Nazis. This was required reading in one of my history courses in college. I recommend this to any history buff, major, professor, etc. It's good stuff. Read the parts about the battles of Kursk and Stalingrad...it will amaze you. There is a hint of profanity in the book so beware." | Lonely Planet Russian Phrasebook (Phrasebooks) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"The Lonely Planets Russian Phrase Book is one of the best around. It is compact and very easy to refer to quickly. The English/Russian and Russian/English dictionary at the back contains every word you could need as a beginner in the world of Russian. The book is divided into chapters, e.g. meeting people and travelling and has a large section at the front on reading, pronunciation and the Russian language. Throughout the book there are cultural comparisons which help explain how to get by and be understood in Russia without inadvertantly offending anyone! All in all this is a really good book and i would highly recommend it to anyone who wanted to get a basic grasp of the language. I work in a Travel bookshop and it's the best Russian Phrase Book i've ever seen!" If you are thinking about buying a Alternative Vacation Properties in Russia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Russia. "We spent 22 days in Ukraine to adopt our son. We used this phrase book constantly. In addition to helping us learn basic phrases, we liked the explanations of customs and historical vignettes." This book has supper information about Russia. So take it with you when you Buy a Vacation Casa in Russia. "I have been in Russia for a year now and this book is never out of my pocket! It has been well and truly worn out. It explains things very well and is much better than any of the other phrasebooks I have bought." Relax with this book when on Vocation or Holiday in Russia. It would be so handy when you Buy a Vocation or Holiday Property in Russia. "This book sounds like a great book. However, if you already know a little Russian, you will realize that a lot of the phonetic pronunciations are inaccurate. There are many instances where 'd' and 't' sounds are written wrong. Also the very common Russian sound 'ye' is often written as only 'e'.
While most Russians are accomodating and will try to understand what you are saying, you may as well get a book that at least attempts to give you the proper pronunciation of words.
Also included in this book is a section on Russian curse words. I'm not sure why anyone would need to know them but if you do, maybe you will like this book." This book has great information on Russia, well worth reading if you buying a Alternative Holiday Villa in Russia. |
