"If you're inspired to go to tropical places after watching "The Beach", then this story might make you think again! It's full of the complex struggle to survive on a tropical island and reveals some of the home-sickness you might expect when so far from everything you know best. The author's spirit of adventure and survival is both realistic and at times esoteric. It shows how thoroughly inventive you need to be and also goes back in time to an interesting middle-class upbringing in 1950's London. Altogether a very interesting and enjoyable account." "Found this book useful and informative. I've often found Lonely Planet to be quite out of date, but not on this occasion - price guides seemed quite accurate and didn't find anything that had disappeared. I've seen some other reviews (by Americans) criticising it for having an anti-US bias in the history sections - but I didn't agree with this. The Philippines has had a very difficult history and has suffered at the hands of other countries colonial interests - the US included - and I thought this was well explained. The general commentary is informal and I would recommend this guidebook for all generations." A wealth of information about Philippines Island, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vacation Vacation property in Philippines Island.

"Unlike some other reviewers, I don't think the travel warnings should be suppressed. Yes these things happen rarely, but better safe than sorry! The Philippines are a very friendly country but let's not forget there are rebels in Mindanao and guerillas (even though almost inactive) on Luzon, not to mention the high crime rates in the big cities, especially Manila - and Lonely Planet as usually does excellent job warning about all of these. The locals I was talking to confirmed all the information.

It looks though like except for the travel warnings this guide is not updated frequently. A small example: it claims that the voltage in Baguio City is 110V while it looks like they switched to the countrywide standard when the US military has left, 15 years ago." About other regions I can't give any statements because I have not been there. But based on what I have found out so far I'm first making use of the Internet and local contacts (through e-mail and telephone) before turning to this guidebook. Linn provides a detailed account of the big-battle operations of 1899 and then looks at the guerrilla war in the various islands.
