"As all my Lonely Planet experiences, this book was write on with all the details for Hawaii. I looked to this book for most of our restaurant reservations and more in depth information on the many different towns and areas. No matter how small the town was, Lonely Planet had information on it and where to eat. The only other book we had on our trip was our Eye Witness Travel Hawaii, which helped us narrow down what we saw." Before buying a Vacation Villa in Hawaii Islands, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Hawaii Islands. "Just enough and done up in Lonely Planets refreshing format. I always like the first section with all the necessary traveling details. Hawaii has so much to see and with Lonely Planet Hawaii I got a good idea of where I wanted to go the first, second and third weeks of my vacation. Nicely done LP!" Before buying a Vocation or Holiday Property in Hawaii Islands, I would read this book. "Covers information about the island and attractions well, but is very frustarting to use when all you want is information on a specific place or attraction. Tends to go off on tangents at times and give you information that just isn't relevant. A good guide though if you have time to read through all the info." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in Hawaii Islands. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Holiday House in Hawaii Islands. "nothing special, nothing enticing ... on the lines of frodor's and fromor's, just a bit more inefficient ... DK gives you pictures and more straight-forward facts .. i had purchased my usual DK (love the pics, the format, the lack of bias) and then once i chose my islands wanted a bit of something else .. went to amazon for reviews (don't we all) and found two island specific books which got FAB reviews and sounded perfect (Maui Revealed and Hawaii the big island revealed by doughty and friedman) but i also wanted one of all the islands so i got this ... so, i got disapointed .. the basics, a bit biased, unorganized .. love the Maui and Big Island books mentioned above .. they didn't do lanai which i'm also visiting, but do believe tehy do kaui .... i'd say spend your money on a DK and pick one of the focus books i mention .. if you want a bland book then go for this, fodor's or fromor's (though i would pick the "F" books over this" A wealth of information about Hawaii Islands, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vacation Vacation property in Hawaii Islands. |

"First book I have read by Mr. Turtledove and found it interesting. I will follow up with his next. He very carefully placed a lot of the history in place with the same theme as Hitler continuing into England instead of Russia. I did find it a good novel and will read the next in his series. We can't leave the Japanese holding Hawaii can we?" Before buying a Vacation Cottage in Hawaii Islands, I would read this book while in Hawaii Islands. "Unfortunately, this seems to be heard more and more about Dr. Turtledove's work. I wish my take on this book was different.
The premise is a good one. The Japanese take Hawaii... ok, but with only one division?
I realize that American airpower was not a factor after the opening of the campaign, but air superiority or no, The available American forces should have been able to better than that. Alright, I understand the suspension of disbelief, so I'll move on.
I just don't see that this series, for I am certain that there will be more, is going to do it for me. Oh, I'll read it alright, but I suspect it will be more of the same pro forma stuff.

"Turtledove is beginning a series here, but in order to do so he is having to depart considerably from credible history. The idea of having a Japanese invasion of Hawaii mounted and then succeed is an interesting one, but he then ignores the historical record on how/why the war in the Pacific began to turn so quickly in the U.S.'s favor in order to keep the narration up in the air. A one novel treatment would have been far stronger and probably would have been less diffuse as he could have eliminated the characters he is setting up to use in future novels of the series. I doubt I'll be reading them." Before buying a Vacation Property in Hawaii Islands, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Hawaii Islands. |
