Germany (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"The book is very detailed about where to stay and where to eat, how to get there and how to get away, and even how to do your laundry. HOWEVER - it doesn't tell you what to see and do. The main attraction are described only briefly and many attraction are not mentioned at all (especially in Berlin and Munich). The book is very good for planning the logistic part of the trip but we needed other books and web sites to know what places to visit. This book is quite a disappointment compared to other Lonely Planet books I have used." www.HomeIsAway.com great Holiday Casa to Buy in Germany.

"Overall, I found Lonely Planet's guide more informative and definitely more accurate than Let's Go's. However, I must thoroughly agree with other readers--the book does a severe injustice to Eastern Germany. While Eastern and Western Germany are once again one country, they continue to be very different in many respects. LP judges Eastern Germany with very Western German eyes, not recognizing the fascinating history and culture that lies within this region. Lonely Planet--improve your Eastern Germany section!

Also, more information could be included about Germany's various Nature Parks. While they don't rival the National Parks of the states, they are beautiful nonetheless and offer tons of opportunities for exploring." This book has great information about Germany. So take it with you when you Buy a Holiday House in Germany.

"I have only recently discovered the delights of Germany, and this book provides a decent amount of information to get you started. The history bit at the front, maps and language bit at the back are just three of the particularly useful features of this book. A must for people travelling to Germany." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Vacation in Germany. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Germany.

"THE LONELY PLANET GERMANY is among the most complete travel guides on the market. Far superior to similar books presented by its better known competitor, THE LONELY PLANET GERMANY presents travel in Germany to the widest range of budgets, from elegant to thrifty. It describes a wider range of sites to visit than any other guidebook I've seen, and offers good advice toward the widest range of entertainment interests. THE LONELY PLANET GERMANY should be the first book you buy when planning any trip to Germany, and it would serve well as your only guidebook." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Alternative Vacation in Germany. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Alternative Vacation Cottage in Germany.

"I travel a lot and compare guides a lot. I have used and enjoyed other Lonely Planet guides for other countries successfully. This one was a real disappointment. It is thorough, but does not really teach you to prioritize your time, or compare routes. It is intensely geared towards rail and bus travelers, but many things in Germany are worth renting a car to see--in which case the book will not cover those areas at all. Hotels chosen by the book will be in relation to train stations--which aren't always either a good deal or a restful place to stay. Add that to the fact it's heavy, and you'll be shlepping a lot of useless information unless you're spending the whole year there..." Before buying a Vacation Villa in Germany, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Germany.

The Illustrated History of the Countryside (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"The Norfolk Broads are artificial, not natural. Forests traditionally could exist without a tree in sight. Oliver Rackham has a few surprises up his sleeve but what really makes this book great is that for all its 500 or so pages, its a total page turner!

The British countryside was made: barely an acre of our land is in its prehistoric state. This book shows how woods, fields ponds and heath grew up alongside mankind; how they were used, and how historical documents as well as the land itself takes us far back into history.

The land changes slowly, and despite the damage of the last 100 years there is much of historical interest to be found, and the guided walks of the illustrated edition take you there.

A beautiful example of how a lifelong academic can remain passionate about his subject and totally readable. I read the non-illustrated version, but I checked the illustrated one in the local bookshop and it looks fantastic." Relax with this book when on Vocation or Holiday in Germany. It would be so handy when you Buy a Vocation or Holiday Casa in Germany.

"As the previous reviewer says, this is completely fascinating. I read the illustrated abridgement, and while I found it a page turner, it does read like an abridgement. The pictures are great though. Can't wait to get hold of the full edition." If you are thinking about buying a Vacation Casas in Germany, I would buy this book to take with you while in Germany.

"During an expat job in the UK, I would wonder how the countryside there got many of the features you see there. This book did a very good job of explaining the origins of roads, walls, forests, woods, pastures, hedges, etc in the UK. I look forward to tracking down a few more of Rackham's books on other parts of the world." Before buying a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in Germany, I would read this book while in Germany.

Astrid Proll: Baader-Meinhof - Pictures on the Run 1967-1977 (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"This book is exactly what it purports to be: a collection of photos documenting the RAF. Astrid Proll's short 1998 narrative and musings on her experiences makes somewhat interesting reading, but this is not a history or work of analysis, and readers who are seeking such will be disappointed. _Pictures on the Run_ serves as a unique and invaluable accompaniment to Stefan Aust's volume, and should be seen as such. If the reader isn't already familiar with the photo subjects, s/he will only be perplexed by the single line captions. If like me, however, you are intrigued by the RAF and the Deutsche Herbst, you will keep this book beside you as you read Aust, Becker, Vague, and Baumann. You will return to the pictures again and again, and some of the faces will haunt you." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Holiday in . It would be so usefull when you Buy a Holiday Casa in .

"VERY INTERESTING! - A must for anyone interested in BAADER MEINHOF! The pictures tell quite a story. The whole book can be used as a suppliment to the other BAADER MEINHOF reading!" If you are thinking about buying a Holiday Cottages in , I would buy this book to take with you while in .

"While some of the accounts are informative, this book is simply a blatant project to make money. The crimes committed by the group were hideous and, how better to squeeze a little more out of the publicity by justifying them?

The photographs in this book are bad, taken by an amateur and tell no story. They're of minimal interest and do nothing to help explain anything of what really went on behind these scenes. I do not understand how the reviewer from the New York times can describe the pictures as "daunting" ad "carefully selected". They're a haphazardly thrown together group of nothing. If these were the best of the bunch, the bad ones must have been terrible.

I think I might be a little less hostile if this book were a lot cheaper, but I was expecting a lot more substance and pictures of more than marginal interest. My advice would be to try and check this book in the local library first to make sure it is what you thought it was." Before buying a Vacation House in , I would read this book.

The Rough Guide to Berlin (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"Easily the best guide to the city. At a first-glance comparison with the Time Out guide the Rough Guide appears dull and poorly illustrated, but the Rough Guides beats all other guidebooks I've seen, both in the quality and intelligence of its writing, and the book's systematic division into extremely well researched chapters that cover the sights and history of each neigborhood. The Rough Guides recommendations for where to eat, drink and shop also have an authority that no other guide matches. As you'd expect one or two have changed since this edition was published, but hey, that's life.

The other reviewers are right in saying that the maps are not as good as they should be. According to Rough Guides' website, a new edition of this book will be out in the fall in the snazzy new design the company now uses for all titles. Hopefully the maps will be improved too." If you are thinking about buying a Holiday Cottages in Germany, I would buy this book to take with you while in Germany.

"Berlin is a huge city which can, at many times, be very intimidating. The Rough Guide Series takes some of that alienation and fear away as it gives you a very thorough and concise view of the city of berlin.

Aside from giving almost 100% accurate advice on where to eat, sleep, and party, this guide also keys readers in on some of Berlin's very vivid history. Taking Berlin, district to district, it is very detailed in letting the reader know where's what and how to get there.

Without my Rough Guide, I would have been lost in Berlin. I wouldn't even have known where to mail my postcards from. The detailed maps and subway layout are excellent as well. All in all, this guide is great for a first time visitor (like me) or someone who is already familiar with all the Berlin has to offer." This book has a wealth of information about Germany. So take it with you when you Buy a Vocation or Holiday Villa in Germany.

"Whilst the history and descriptions in this book are quite good it is let down by the accuracy of the maps. Many of the maps are simply different scales of the same area and there is not enough coverage of Berlin's outer areas. Additionally the maps that noted the train stations did not note the places of interest and vice versa. As such I found myself constantly flicking between maps to get bearings. However the most disappointing aspect was that the underground train map was out of date which led me onto the wrong train on more than one occasion. Of additional frustration was that more often than not the opening times for places were wrong.

If you are looking for one book that comprehensively covers all of Berlin I would look else where." If you are thinking about buying a Alternative Holiday Villas in Germany, I would buy this book to take with you while in Germany.

Reviews:

"Took this guide with me when I was in Berlin for a week. Had no problems. Very up to date. Nice explenations about all the sites. Could do with a bit more colour pictures. In my opinion alot better than Timeout.

All the information provided in it was spot on.

A tip for anyone visiting Berlin. Remember to validate your train ticket where you purchase it!" Before buying a Alternative Vacation Apartment in Germany, I would read this book.

"Clear and easy to read, good map of the public transport system. Buy it if you going for a long weekend." Before buying a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in Germany, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Germany.

"This stackes up very poorly against the "Rough Guide's". The main problem is the format, rather than list each area & then list all the attractions & facilities in that area it lists all the attractions in categorys: bars, cafes, shows etc are listed alphabetically with their address. The problem being if you are not a native you then have to figure out which area each address is in. I Have used "Rough Guides" many times all over the world & find them much easier to follow & much more use in locating what I needed." A wealth of information about Germany, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vacation Vacation property in Germany.

"This book has all the information you need, to prepare you for a wonderful vacation in Berlin. It's the kind of book that you curl up with near the fire on a cold snowy winter day and read about the trip you'll take during the summer. But--------- there are better guides for those individuals who have travelled in Europe before and who just want the nuts and bolts and will allow the city to visit them. I personally recommend either DK (Dorling Kindersley) Eyewitness Guide to Berlin or the slightly older Knopf 'City Guide' published last in 1998. However with Berlin changing so rapidly, you'll probably do better with the DK guide. It has more photos which aren't essential, but are a nice added feature but more importantly it breaks the city up in a better way to help you get the most out of your time. I think it's much better." This book has supper information on Germany, well worth reading if you buying a Holiday Cottage in Germany.

Armageddon: The Battle for Germany 1944-45 (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"I had previously read 'Overlord' by Max Hastings and found that he told that story (the battle of Normandy) very well. I read this book in hardback and found that it is similarly well told. As well as the pure facts of the allied & Russian advances and German counter-attacks, Max Hastings adds colour and interest from the personal accounts of many people he has interviewed (I contrast this with Berlin The Downfall - Beevor - which I found too dry in this respect). It also deals well with the problems faced by the allied leaders between themselves.

The book covers the western and eastern fronts and the concentration camps. It does not cover the war through Italy.

One thing I think could be much improved is the maps - there are a few, but not enough (e.g. one per chapter), they are very basic and don't tie in well with the text. There could be many more, illustrating the text, and use colour." This book has a wealth of information about Germany. So take it with you when you Buy a Alternative Holiday Casa in Germany.

Beyond the Rhine: A Screaming Eagle in Germany (Book)

Customer Rating:
Reviews:

"This is the last book of Donald Burgett's journey from raw recurit to war weary veteran at the end of W.W.2 . This book follows the 101st Division from Bastogne to the end of the war. With the Battle of the Bulge won, this final book in the series deals more with the aftermath of the war and the horrors of the concentration camps that were uncovered as the German army collapsed and retreated. "The Bulge" was the last major action that the 101st took part in during W.W.2 and with the end of the war in sight, survival was just as important as forcing the German Army back into Germany and their final surrender. Although this book, obviously lacks the "action" of the author's three earlier books about D-Day, Arnhem and The Bulge, this one is no less enjoyable. With this book we see the chaos that was Europe at the end of the war and the problems that ensued. In short, if this period of history intrests you then this book is well worth reading." This book has supper information on Germany, well worth reading if you buying a Alternative Holiday House in Germany.

"I have read Burgett's first three books and they are great reads.
In comparison with those first three books, this is an average read. Why? Very little action. It almost seems like a travel guide with Burgett saying in essence--I went here and then I went there. Burgett is a good author, but I think he is trying to capitalize on his combat experience. His first three books detail the combat experience, but this fourth book could have been cut down to fifty pages, and attached onto his last book. Because of the publisher, they make Burgett get another book out of very minimal material. I don't think there is a fifth book here Don, so don't try.
That said, Burgett is a great author, so please read his first three books about the Normandy Invasion, Battle of the Bulge, and the Holland Campaign. For the WWII historian, these show the true experiences of an American soldier." www.HomeIsAway.com great Vacation House to Buy in Germany.

"Donald Burgett and all others who have fought in any war are truly remarkable people. This is the final book in a series of four and tells of the final battles of WW2 and of the bravery and attempt to survive now that the war is nearing it's close. It also shows the injustice in how the soldiers remained in Europe and returned home in the winter of 1945. But it also shows the interesting discoveries made by individual soldiers once the Germans were defeated, such as a train full of Gold and US currency.

An excellent and interesting final instalment, by a great man." Before buying a Vocation or Holiday Villa in Germany, I would read this book while in Germany.

"Nobody but a combat soldier can answer the question: "What was it like?" For those of us who have never experienced battle we can only try to imagine it. Mr. Burgett urges us to hunker down into his foxhole as the carnage of noman's land drops onto our laps like a screaming mortar shell. His unbelievable experiences make for a series of WWII memoirs unsurpassed in their vivid telling. I have read all four of his books-in chronological order-and I cannot imagine a more genuine and descriptive account of a trooper's brutal experiences in the European theater of WWII. I wish I could meet the man to shake his hand. His dedication and sense of honor and sacrifice make me proud to be an American, and very grateful indeed for having known of such combat men as Donald R. Burgett." A wealth of information about Germany, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vocation or Holiday Vocation or Holiday property in Germany.
