"Although this book contains a lot of useful information the author has written in a very patronising style which really starts to grate the more you read. The Loney Planet guides are a better bet." "Though it makes no pretence of being a back-packing guide it should make more of the fact that this is the guide for those who hire a car and stay in 5* hotels. It gives plenty of great advice on what to take and what the place is like (I might ignore the bit about taking evening dress) but when it comes down to places to stay and sites to see this is very much a guide for those wanting home comforts and safety. If you are an independent traveller get the Lonely Planet guide as it is far more generous with its breadth of hotel reviews and also far more adventurous in the places to go and see. Go to Sri Lanka and enjoy it, this guide was just not the right one for me." "I chose this book over lonely planet becuase it's layout and reference sections were much easier to follow. Also it was the latest version available in the shops.

I was a little disappointed that some of the information in the book was out of date already! Resturants recommended no longer existed, prices had changed and journey times were often out by a few hours (especially on trains). Often what the book told me to expect at a site / place wasn't the case.

Also the maps though handy for general direction could have done with a more accurate scale. And I thought more detail could have been covered about the sites of Sigyria....it was very sparse and this site deserves more than what was in the book.

"I found this book to be absolutely bang on the money! I also had a Lonely Planet guide with me and didn't really need to use it once! In fact, the few times I did look at it (especially when I was in the North East) it was frequently wrong in comparison to the Footprint guide anyway. I especially liked the slight departure from Footprint's somewhat "formal" style of old, and reading Edward Aves's text was like being guided through the country by a trusted yet very informative old friend. I was able to compare the prices listed in the Lonely Planet Guide with those quoted and used the book to bargain the prices down - it was great! Most of the stuff in the guide was tourist orientated - where I prefer to take the road less traveled. I definitely recommend getting this guide before you head over - and read it over a few times before getting there, it will help you out heaps!"
