"I thought that buying a hedonists guide would be a good bet for a lads holiday in Tallinn, but this book is 80% about museams, buildings and restaurants, which is all well and good but hardly fitting with the word 'hedonist'. I assumed it would give some uselful info about the price of drinks and meals - one of the key pull factors for Eastern European citie - but no, none at all. It skims over adult clubs in a couple of pages with very little real detail. This is more a general guide to Tallinn rather than a 'hedonists' guide." "I got this book, 24 Hours in the City and Footprint Tallinn and this was the pick for those seeking out the best that Tallinn has to offer. This is "hedonist" as a pursuer of pleasure rather than a consumer of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll and it does what it says on the tin (although it points you in the direction of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll as well if that's what you're after).
It doesn't have the background info, getting around etc that Lonely Planet or Rough Guide does which is fine if you're just going for a weekend and want to make the most of your time there.
The book includes loads of great stuff on the best/most interesting bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels, tourist sights, etc including pretty good "Top 10" or "Top 5" lists, and the venues are helpfully numbered and mapped. There's more listed than you could hope to do in a weekend (and I tried) but the book's descriptions of the places I went to were very accurate." "It's amazing how fast things change in the Baltic region. This update on the original is therefore very welcome. The four contributors obviously have their own passions as they write about their favourite Baltic capital. Excursions to castles, parks and open-air museums that are outside the cities but easily assessible are also included. The colourful individual characters and varied histories of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius become clear through the pages of the book, which are spiced up with anecdotes from eyewitnesses of recent events. This and Bradt's other travel guides to the Baltics are the best and the most reliable to be found. Let's hope we don't have to wait too long for the third edition." "I used this book last year when visiting Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, therefore it is difficult to comment on the Kaliningrad guide.

Trying to use this book as a solo guide to the capitals was near enough impossible. The maps have little detail and are highly in-accurate and there is not much of a restaurant guide either. However, the book does acknowledge this fact and points you in the direction of suitable accompanyments.

Having said that, it contains very useful background information on the cities, including histories. These are often cleverly integrated into wlaking tours around the cities that are very helpful, especially in the maze of streets in the old towns. There are plenty of good ideas for excursions and some good shopping guides.

All in all it is a very good book for the independent, non-tour guided traveller. It would have been extremley difficult to get by without, even though it needed a little extra to help it along. "This book has good all-around coverage of the three capitals, but where it really shines is in describing history/culture/architecture. Rather than reciting dry facts, this book really makes the past come alive and also gives a real sense of what these countries are like today as they transform. The authors' passion for their subject is infectious. And a lot of thought has gone into this guide - The Riga section even has a little map just to identify each of the Art Nouveau buildings!
Each section of the book includes brief firsthand accounts from those who were in these cities at critical times in their history. (The reminiscences from a former German resident of Kaliningrad are remarkable.) I've spent the most time in Tallinn but have also visited the two other Baltic capitals and this is definitely the book to use." "This book was neither a satisfactory travel guide nor history/cultural guide to Estonia. While trying to be both, it was neither. I was looking for more specific information that a tourist would need for visiting Tallinn and the countryside, ie ferry information, shopping, more on accommodation.Also the quality of the publication (paper & graphics) was very disappointing. "This book adequately covers all the main towns and areas of interest for the independent traveller, although nothing is dealt with in too great detail. Rather a flimsy book in that respect. Very clear town maps and good itinerary suggestions. Some more pictures would have been nice. I would have liked to see more info on the People, Food and Modern life, rather less of History, which is by far the most comprehensive section of the book. Rough Guide fans will like the layout and tone of this book, those of us who prefer Lonely Planet will be less impressed. "Although a previous review criticised this book for not helping with the shopping, there are those of us who can negotiate these things on our own, or who went to Estonia armed also with more touristy guides for those matters (such as the fine "In Your Pocket" series). The Bradt Guide to Estonia, however, is for those of us who wish to know more about the history, culture, and especially the natural history of a place before we travel, that we may arrive informed. Indeed, not many travel guides even touch on a region's natural history, but this one does more than that, and also has some good stories that prepare the traveler. It's good reading." As a minor criticism, or perhaps more as a term of reference for readers, I should note that Laitin seemed more sympathetic to the diaspora Russians than to the local populations. His discussion of Baltic events struck me as distinctly pro-ethnic Russian, although not outrageously so.
