| Pubs & Inns of England & Wales (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay S.) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"An avid user of Special Places to Stay (especially the Spain and British B&B guides), I was intrigued by their new pubs guide. It's everything that you'd expect from the other guides; interesting to browse through, easy to use and to find the right place (symbols, maps etc) and there seems to be a real emphasis on food which is what many of us look for in a good pub. Lots of child-friendly symbols which helps a lot with a young family. Have only tried one so far but it was spot on!" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in England. | England's Thousand Best Churches (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Every reader will wonder "Why didn't he include St ****?"! But by definition every such selection will be subjective. So just accept that and you'll thoroughly enjoy the book. Faultless prose and wonderful photographs." Before buying a Alternative Holiday House in England, I would read this book while in England. "For those interested in knowing more about England's wonderful parish churches, this book is a must. Organized by county, the book should prove useful for travellers like me who fall victim to every village spire. I appreciated both his wit and knowledge about the subject." If you are thinking about buying a Vacation Apartments in England, I would buy this book to take with you while in England. "THIS BOOK HAS BEEEN A CONSTANT SOUCE OF PLEASURE SINCE I PURCHASED IT. THE BOOK WILL BE THE START OF MANY A WEEK-END BREAK AND OFFERS A GOOD REFERENCE TO VISITING CHURCHES IS MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. Any book can be critisised for missing some churches out these churches may not figure in the broad brush picture the author paints. Some feed back to the author could be appreciated. good value. Here's to the next 1,000, this is assuming the author can manage it" This book has supper information about England. So take it with you when you Buy a Vacation Villa in England. "In this book, Jenkins describes his choice of the thousand best churches in England. Churches range from tiny, rural chapels notable for their remote, dramatic settings, to grand and majestic churches. (Cathedrals, however, are not covered, only parish churches.) He also rates the churches from one star through 5 stars. The descriptions are generally full and compelling. However, I took off one star from my rating, because, for the armchair traveller, more pictures would have been welcome. (How frustrating to read about glorious stained glass windows, and have no idea what they actually look like!) Only about one in 10 churches is illustrated with either an interior or exterior photo." | Lonely Planet New England (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Hey, I bought this book and liked it...and I'm a native New Englander. The coverage for Maine is particularly good, or at least I thought so. However, I'm posting this not so much to let y'all know that the guide is good, but to say that this book is in it's third edition, published in 2001. All of the reviews here date from 2000 and before. They apply to the second edition of the book, not the third. So take them with a grain of salt, cuz LP changes it's content alot when they update old editions. Just my two cents." Before buying a Alternative Holiday Property in England, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in England. "I like Lonely Planet guides and find them very useful for other places. I also will concede that writing a guide of New England is really two books, a guide to Boston and a guide to everything else. I was psyched when I first got the book, but quickly became disappointed. I live in Boston and thought there were some big omissions locally. I found the guide to everything else to be lacking in major areas. I suppose if one is new to the area or only staying a week, this guide might be useful. For a reference for a New Englander, try something else." Relax with this book when on Vacation in England. It would be so handy when you Buy a Vacation Cottage in England. "As a single female traveller travelling around New England, I found this book an absolut must have. I followed the books recomendations about places to stay and things to do. With out it who knows where I would have ended up! I looked after this book as if it was my passport." Relax with this book when on Vocation or Holiday in England. It would be so handy when you Buy a Vocation or Holiday Apartment in England. "Hey, I bought this book and liked it...and I'm a native New Englander. | The Rough Guide to England (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"Last summer, I made my first trip to England, and it was absolutely wonderful! Felt like I was going home to my roots. Also to see first-hand the areas where the RAF bravely held off the Nazi air attacks, and the civilian wardens watched the skies and the shores, it made me very thankful for our friends across the Atlantic. The Rough Guide was a critical part of this memorable vacation. It is frank and factual, but also upbeat. You will save money, and time, reading it. but you'll also be prepared to savor the history of the place, and meet the helpful and friendly people who live there. We took our Rough Guide everywhere. It was like a trusted, and good-spirited English friend. And it will sit on the top of our day packs during our next trip there." This book has wonderfull information on England, well worth reading if you buying a Holiday Property in England. "This reader looked thru oodles of travel books for information for the "remote" places of England vs. the typical visiting grounds like London & Bath. Key elements looked for were: concise transportation prices/options (especially on the railways & bus) , detailed regional maps, and alternate information places to contact (e.g. Dept. of transportation in Brighton, or Tourist info. on the Isle of Wight). This reader was not interested in finding the best place to stay -- but would respond in saying that this information was "broad" compared to a Frommers or Michelan vesions of text. This book's material filled in several holes that other travel books with pretty pictures and fluffy text could not. Bully for that!" Relax with this book when on Vacation in England. It would be so handy when you Buy a Vacation House in England. "I live in England and I have found this book a helpfull guide to what to see in England. I like to photo's and the Accomodation information. If you are visting our great country I reccomend you by this guide then any other." If you are thinking about buying a Alternative Holiday Houses in England, I would buy this book to take with you while in England. "A year ago we went to England armed with the Rough Guide. I can't really compare it to other travel books (other than one of the Michelin Green guides, which we also used), but the Rough Guide worked for us. We particularly liked the fact that it did not only dirct us to the sights "everybody" would want to see. The writers were actually pretty up front about attractions that they considered to be overrated. The book was also really useful for the early stages planning our trip, because it provided a nice broad overview of the regions. | "Time Out" Book of London Walks: v. 2 ("Time Out" Guides) (Book)Customer Rating: Reviews:
"I have used and read many self-walking tour books and have taken walking tours in London. I found this book to be one of the best as usual with any Time Out Guide Book. The information in their books is not as detailed as some others, but they give a great overall view. The walks, on the other hand, go into very good detail. The maps are excellant and the information on how to get to the start of the walk is the best I've ever seen. I plan to use this book when I go to London next February (2001)." Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in England. It would be so usefull when you Buy a Vacation Apartment in England. "A book that will probably appeal to Londoners as it has a good variety of walks covering most areas of London and of different lengths. The varierty is excellent with an amusing contribution from Graham Norton." Before buying a Alternative Vacation Apartment in England, I would read this book. |

| The Nag Hammadi Library in English (Book)Customer Rating: The Nag Hammadi Library was discovered in 1945 buried in a large stone jar in the desert outside the modern Egyptian city of Nag Hammadi. It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. That this collection has resurfaced at this historical juncture is more than likely no coincidence. --P. Randall Cohan Reviews:
"That's right! Just like Alanis in "Dogma", though if yer god, I bet your hotter than Alanis. I was in Whiskeys in Moblie last Tuesday cause I lost my job here in Bromley for telling my boss I had to KNOW why he wanted me to forklift the empty pallets into the truck instead of just following his instructions blindly, and the bartender comes over and is like "yer cut off" something about it not being karaoke night, and I say, "what right have you to decide if I'm cut off or not," and he says "I say your drunk" and I say "but that guy over there had more than me and HE'S not cut off" and the bartenter says, "I decide who's drunk or not drunk" so I nailed his head to the bar and took off with a bottle of whiskey and got drunk on my own in the parking lot.
I can't remember which one of Jesuss stories this reminds me of, but it's a great book unless you have a hangover like I do. I guess that bartender was right, I just had to see for myself." A wealth of information about England, a great book if you are thinking about buying a Vacation Vacation property in England. "My daughter and I are scientists and have stumbled upon several unique phenomena during our research into all the conditions which influence the health and well-being of mankind. These, to our surprise are identical to many of the sayings spoken by Jesus in The Gospel of Thomas, included in James Robinson's book. They bring Jesus directly into today's world, not in terms of the gloom and doom of modern day prophets and scientists, but as an absolute confirmation of God's Presence, here and now, as real live sensations that can be experienced, no matter what your religious beliefs may be, or even if you have none. Would any readers of the book, the Editor or Publishers be interested in our research papers? These take us a step beyond belief into knowing and bring this historical document to life." Before buying a Vacation Villa in England, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in England. |
