"An avid user of Special Places to Stay (especially the Spain and British B&B guides), I was intrigued by their new pubs guide. It's everything that you'd expect from the other guides; interesting to browse through, easy to use and to find the right place (symbols, maps etc) and there seems to be a real emphasis on food which is what many of us look for in a good pub. Lots of child-friendly symbols which helps a lot with a young family. Have only tried one so far but it was spot on!" Why not buy this book, and read while on your Vacation in England. "Hey, I bought this book and liked it...and I'm a native New Englander. The coverage for Maine is particularly good, or at least I thought so.

However, I'm posting this not so much to let y'all know that the guide is good, but to say that this book is in it's third edition, published in 2001. All of the reviews here date from 2000 and before. They apply to the second edition of the book, not the third. So take them with a grain of salt, cuz LP changes it's content alot when they update old editions.

"I like Lonely Planet guides and find them very useful for other places. I also will concede that writing a guide of New England is really two books, a guide to Boston and a guide to everything else. I was psyched when I first got the book, but quickly became disappointed. I live in Boston and thought there were some big omissions locally. I found the guide to everything else to be lacking in major areas. I suppose if one is new to the area or only staying a week, this guide might be useful. "This reader looked thru oodles of travel books for information for the "remote" places of England vs. the typical visiting grounds like London & Bath. Key elements looked for were: concise transportation prices/options (especially on the railways & bus) , detailed regional maps, and alternate information places to contact (e.g. Dept. of transportation in Brighton, or Tourist info. on the Isle of Wight). This reader was not interested in finding the best place to stay -- but would respond in saying that this information was "broad" compared to a Frommers or Michelan vesions of text. This book's material filled in several holes that other travel books with pretty pictures and fluffy text could not. Bully for that!" Relax with this book when on Vacation in England. "A year ago we went to England armed with the Rough Guide. I can't really compare it to other travel books (other than one of the Michelin Green guides, which we also used), but the Rough Guide worked for us. We particularly liked the fact that it did not only dirct us to the sights "everybody" would want to see. The writers were actually pretty up front about attractions that they considered to be overrated. The book was also really useful for the early stages planning our trip, because it provided a nice broad overview of the regions.

The Nag Hammadi Library in English (Book)

The Nag Hammadi Library was discovered in 1945 buried in a large stone jar in the desert outside the modern Egyptian city of Nag Hammadi. It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. That this collection has resurfaced at this historical juncture is more than likely no coincidence. --P. Randall Cohan

"That's right! Just like Alanis in "Dogma", though if yer god, I bet your hotter than Alanis. I was in Whiskeys in Moblie last Tuesday cause I lost my job here in Bromley for telling my boss I had to KNOW why he wanted me to forklift the empty pallets into the truck instead of just following his instructions blindly, and the bartender comes over and is like "yer cut off" something about it not being karaoke night, and I say, "what right have you to decide if I'm cut off or not," and he says "I say your drunk" and I say "but that guy over there had more than me and HE'S not cut off" and the bartenter says, "I decide who's drunk or not drunk" so I nailed his head to the bar and took off with a bottle of whiskey and got drunk on my own in the parking lot.
