"For a first edition travel guide, this book is excellent. Full of useful travel information and historical context. However, Croatia is changing massively and rapidly. It went from communism to authoritarianism to... maybe democracy this year. It went through wars and occupation and is rebuilding every day. It experienced massive migrations and refugee flows. Some of the information in this book (particularly in Eastern Slavonia) was already dated as the book went to press, there needs to be an annual update." If you are thinking about buying a Vocation or Holiday Houses in Croatia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Croatia.

"Lonely Planet: Croatia takes the reader on a journey to the land known commonly for its war-torn images. However, beyond the devastation lies a beautiful country with a unique culture and lifestyle. Author Jeanne Oliver does a fine job of explaining the different aspects of the nation that is Croatia. The only thing lacking is a developed understanding of the people and their history. Otherwise, a fine piece of work that is certainly a worthwhile read." Before buying a Vacation Cottage in Croatia, I would read this book while in Croatia.

"If you understand the type of guides published by Eyewitness, you will be real happy with this purchase. As a future traveler to Croatia, I needed a book to help me with where to stay, where to eat and where to go for nightlife. For that, I looked to the Rough Guide Croatia (search on 1858285445) and Lonely Planet Croatia (search on 1864503327). These books have lots of text and lots of information! However, when I wanted a guide that explains the history of Croatia, detailed information on each sight that I'm visiting, and great pictures to boot, that's when I picked up this book. It does have a restaurant and accomodation section, but it's pretty small. I wouldn't rely solely on this book to plan your stay in Croatia..." If you are thinking about buying a Holiday Properties in Croatia, I would buy this book to take with you while in Croatia.

"DK guides are impressive at first glance notably for the high picture content and inclusion of useful illustrated maps and guides. On occasions they've been picked up for inaccurate or outdated information, but there was little by way of errors we could pick out of the Croatian guide. Restaurant recommendations seemed pretty good.

If I had any criticism, it would be that several excellent places in Istria were entirely omitted, for no obvious reason. For example, the stunningly beautiful hill town of Groznjan, also home to many art galleries and a music festival, is accorded a brief entry that fails to do it justice, while other lovely hill towns fail to warrant a single mention." "I think that Rough Guides are seen as the best travel guides around, and having used this particular book in Croatia, I will stick with that series. I can't say I visited a lot of the country (and therefore didn't use the whole book, but it was very accurate and informative where I did use it. Plus the sections on history and language were just unexpected bonuses. I recommend this guide highly." "I would like to say one thing. This book is excelent. it is a first hand account from the eyes of child who lived through WW2. If one looks at other reviews we see people talking about how horrible this book is and how it is all lies. Now lets look at thsoe peoples names, all Croats. Jasenovac did happen and people who deny it are lying. Even the Croatian government said that 700,000 did die there. Come on now 700,000 Serbs in 4 years. "Ivanovic's book is more a personal account of his own experiences in Jasenovac and the surrounding region, rather than a general historical account. His book demonstrates Ustashi barbarism, while being careful not to generalise to all Croats and Muslims as being Ustashi ( unlike the way in which many historians portray all Serbs as being evil today).

In fact, only a small minority supported the Ustashi, and he
acknowledges the heroism of many of his Croat and Muslim friends.
As no one truly knows the number of civilians who were exterminated at Jasenovac, Ivanovic relies on the estimate of Hermann Neubacher, an important German diplomat to Yugoslavia (who's position escapes me), as being 750,000. Whether he meant in the whole of the Independent State of Croatia or just at Jasenovac, is difficult to tell. However, it is likely that he meant in the whole of the NDH."
