"Just got back from China and Tibet for 3 weeks, done Beijing, Xian, Lhasa, Guilin, Yangshuo. Overall good in terms of practicalities on places to go and how to do it but some of detail is old. The maps are shocking though, so photocopy those from the Lonely Planet and take this book. Best advice is though if you are going to go and do China and these places make sure you speak to someone who has been and best places and hotels and guest houses to stay. Another top tip is wherever you stay make sure you take the business card of the hotel or guest house, otherwise language wise you are going to have problems!" "The Rough Guides are considered among the "cream of the crop" in the guidebook world, and this book is no exception. I used it extensively in the planning phase of my recent month-long trip to China, and it was very helpful.

The background sections of the book are outstanding, giving the reader a solid overview of Chinese history and culture. The primary sites of interest to travelers are adequately covered as well, and so the book is very helpful in planning one's itinerary.

The main drawback of the volume is it's weight. If you are backpacking in China, as I was, this book is pretty heavy to be lugging around. Therefore, unless you are staying in China more than a couple of weeks, you might consider looking at the smaller city guides.....or ripping the necessary sections out of this book and packing only those in your rucksack.

"I found this guide extremely useful for my short visit to Hong Kong and Macau on March 2002. However, I have to rate it with only 4 stars as the information was slightly outdated. This is of course a consequence of the two cities changing so rapidly in the last three years since this edition was first put on sale.
This is my first experience with a "Rough Guide" (I usually used the Michelin Green Guides where available) and I think I will consider these guides again for my next destination. One thing that I missed from the Rough Guide was some fotographs of the main places recommended for a visit. That would have been very useful in deciding what to visit and helpful to find the recommended attractions." Before buying a Vacation Casa in China, I would read this book while in China.

"I agree with quite a few of the comments of other reviewers. The LP Mongolia is rather shoddy and sketchy and could definitely be much better.

But is there an alternative ? None of us would have dared to venture outside UB (tourist-speak for Ulaan Baatar) without LP Mongolia. Therein lies its indispensibility !!!" This book has great information on China, well worth reading if you buying a Vocation or Holiday Cottage in China.

"Much of the content of the 1993 edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Mongolia is badly outdated. Things have changed a lot (and for the better, in terms of availability of goods and services) since the author was here. He can't be faulted for that. But he can be faulted for having written a lot that is unkind, unfair, and uninformed. Two researchers were in Mongolia in the summer of 1996, doing research for an updated edition of this book. "There are some major problems with this book. It takes a condescending tone towards Mongolian culture/food/attractions from the average expectations for such things if you weren't in Mongolia. Lonely Planet compares Mongolia to the, say, average European country. The average traveler to Mongolia is not looking for an average European country. Taking this mode to guiding you through the country, cheapens the experience with unecessary and biased opinions. I found the maps to be pretty useful, and a good base for finding your way around the country. In the absence of other guide books to Mongolia, Lonely Planet is not a bad choice, if read with a grain of salt." Relax with this book when on Vacation in China.
