"We brought this and the Lonely Planet guide, the later generally being more accurate, particularly the maps. This was surprising because the Rough Guide was supposed to be newer. Overall though a good guidebook and enough to get you around the country to see a lot more than an all inclusive hotel and a beach." "I recently travelled to the Dominican Republic and purchased this guide for my trip based on the online reviews.

Although the book is informative and does offer a good selection of transportation and hotel suggestions, it is unnecessarily and generously sprinkled with negative commentary on the country.

On my travels, I had the pleasure of travelling throughout the island, from West to East. It was difficult to find a chapter in this book that did not offer some kind of caustic negative comment on the area being described.

After reading the guide for a few days, I was so distracted by the constant negativity that it overshadowed the content. I hesitantly continued reading it only because I did not have a better one at hand. I would not recommend this particular guide.

"If you're going to the Dominican Republic you've got to use this book. I brought four different books with me on my trip to the Dominican Republic and this was the one that I found was by far the most accurate. It had great, honest coverage of the all-inclusive hotels, comprehensive coverage of all the major tourism areas, like Santo Domingo's colonial district, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Cabarete etc. But what was most helpful were the terrific recommendations for sights to see that weren't in any other guidebook. My husband and I were able to explore Taino caves that have depictions of Christopher Columbus' three ships. These caves were in the middle of a wilderness national park and no other guide book even knew that they existed. Also by far the best restaurant and bar recommendations. Highly recommended." "I used this guide to travel in Santo Domingo, Costanza and Samana and found it to be very useful in trip planning. First of all, it helped me to identify Samana and Constanza as great places to visit without the heavy tourism. It was also packed with information on practically every town we passed on the way and offered good hotel and restaurant recommendations. My only criticism is that it seemed the author probably traveled by car and the information on public transportation wasn't quite as thorough as in Lonely Planet guides. However, the sheer volume of other information and the easy to use layout made up for that. It's physical size is tiny at 4" x 5.5" but it contained better information than any of the other books I saw. This book was very informative on popular attractions, places to visit, transportation and prices. I was only dissapointed with the fact that there weren't that many photos of the island...but the few that were in there were very pretty! "Having been on the island for a while, the guide became invaluable whist out there and covered much that you could easilly miss without it - from the sites at places such as Nelsons Dockyard to the everyday oddities on Antigua such as service charges and tax, the book has it all. Sadly it losses one star for the restaurant section which is in need of updating somewhat e.g. a trip to St Johns to Shooters tavern might sound a great way of mingling with the locals but don't bother - its long since closed down!" "10/10/02 Flew inverness-gatwick-antigua by BA and spent 10 days following the Rough Guide. As this isle has few road signs to speak of the Guide kept us on track and to places we would never have found or been aware of.The gorgeous secluded bay 400m back from Devil"s Bridge was indeed perfect and empty! Eating and drnking could also be relided upon ,Turner"s on Jonson"s point haveing a great view of Montserrat volcano(take bonocs),as well as ex food and svc. Having the guide made this holiday one i will remember, simple as that! Bon voyage." "Seems that the Rough Guide team are trying to get a book out on every location without regard to their roots. I've always bought the Rough Guide for any holiday destination but this one was just full of lists with little extra value.

Very few useful hints were contained, when you land in Barbados, there are lots of free handouts, maps etc which make this book a waste of time.

"I bought this because the book touted itself as a way to find those out of the way places that the usual travel books don't tell you about.

I have read this book, and I learned nothing new -- no restaurants, accommodations, attractions, etc. that I hadn't known about already. So in this regard it was a disappointment.

However, it is a good basic primer about things Barbadian. There are, however, some good, detailed maps. It is also a "pocket" book, small in size, so you could easily bring it with you to Barbados and use as a reference.

However, I also read Harry P.'s book on Barbados. It is much more thorough and also pretty portable. In my opinion, if you need one book on Barbados, this one probably wouldn't be it." "Disappointing. Gone are the comments like, "The beds are hard, but the rooms are clean and good value". Gone is the detail that makes locals ask, "How did you know about this place?" "Went to the beautiful St. Lucia last November, and bought this as a rough guide before I left. It proved very useful, and provided interesting summaries of local sights. You really wouldn't want anything in more detail. My only criticism is that it advised you to take EC$ not US$. Upon arrival I realised this was a mistake as everything is traded in US dollars, especially at hotels. And it was a real effort asking for everything's price in EC$.
I stayed at the Jalousie Hilton, and the guide described this hotel as a 'soulless playground for the rich', it could not have been more wrong! Our hotel and the people there were wonderful, and the scenery breathtaking. So I wouldn't advise you to choose your accommodation based on this book.

"I was planning a honeymoon to St. Lucia, however, this book actually made me change my mind! It included reports of Dengue Fever, documented poisonous tree sap, stated that the roads and many of the tourist sights are dangerous & rickety, and also boasted polluted rivers and waterfalls. Although I am not entirely sure about the truth of the text, I don't want to risk it and find out that the book was true. I didn't want to give it a 5 for truth telling, however, I didn't want to give it a 1 for scaring me away from the island...so I'll settle for a 3, you decide for yourself!"
