"I was looking for a book that really expressed what it was like to live as a westerner in Bhutan, rather than just visit there. I didn't want to read about mere places and locations, so much as listen at the feet of a storyteller who could tell me about a very special people, and their way of life. This book achieves that goal beyond my hopes. Jamie herself is very likeable, and I felt so honoured to be sharing her experience of teaching, and more often being taught by, the Bhutanese." "The subject matter of this book is indeed interesting, the culture beautiful and the story that unfolds compelling, but I feel that this book wastes the oppurtunites that the story held. Within the opening sentences I could see that this was going to be a difficult read with each revelation and "struggle" grating at me more. This book is written in the style of every English graduate I have ever met...which is no good thing. I think that as a gateway book to Bhutan it is useful, but for any international veterans out there, this book will disapoint and indeed frustrate." I'd been searching for a book on Bhutan which could provide me with a little bit of everything about the country viz. the history, geography, people and the culture. I have searched for books on Bhutan in several book stores around. It was so hard to find one in English but I think this one will do.

"Lonely Planet is unbelieveable! They continually pump out the HIGHEST quality guidebooks, and they've done it again with this edition covering Bhutan. I have spent a good portion of my life researching, and hording information on Bhutan, and have found Lonely Planet's guidebook to contain everything and more that the traveller could ever want...with two exceptions. I think that the lack of the U'cen script in the language chapter is a serious mistake. Lonely Planet has the capacity to print in the U'cen script as they did so in their Tibet edition. My other qualm is with the sparse coverage of the smaller and admittedly FAR less visited dzongkhags (districts) (i.e., Daga, Samdrup Jongkhar, Pema Gatshel, Zhemgang, Tsirang, etc.). Lonely Planet, resolve these issues and your book will be the best it could be." Before buying a Vacation Property in Bhutan, I would buy this book to guide you round the local areas in Bhutan.

It provides an excellent introduction to the religion, culture and customs of Bhutan and covers the main highlights of the country in a sensible 'following the road' style - so you come across points of interest in the book in the same order as you come acoss them while in a hi-lux. There is an exhaustve and mouth-watering section on trekking, with a detailed advice concerning trekking health. It you are thinking about visiting this beautiful country, buying this book will convince you." "I found this book to be overall pretty disappointing. First off, the illustrations are horrible. They look like children's cartoon drawings. Why don't the editors of mammal-books hire the same artists who do bird guides? The latter are generally really good.

Secondly, there is a lot of important information lacking. For example the book states that it describes "almost all the species that can be identified in the field easily". I was hoping for a book to 'the mammals of the indian subcontinent' (ALL of them) not a book of 'the mammals of the indian subcontinent that can be easily identified'. The whole section at the end on 'Where to Watch mammals' is pretty useless. I'll get that info from the 'Lonely Planet', thanks.
