"While most of the information in this book was factually correct, I found that it didn’t add all that much to my holiday experience. The overviews of the towns and areas were too brief and didn’t concentrate enough on the practicalities of getting around, buying food and getting a feel for the places.
If you want to spend time in museums, art galleries and opera houses, then this guide is for you! If you want to see the real France without spending a fortune, I’d look elsewhere.

"We used Lonely Planets for holiday travel in southern France for the first (and possible last) time. The recommended restaurant of Peter Mayle fame, Gu et Fils, on Frederick Mistral in Aix was either a typo or non-existent as we located the street but no restaurant to be found. The impersonal nature of the LP recommendations for hotels merely define the facilities, but do not say enough about the character or level of cleanliness. We checked in (and out of) one of Lonely Planet's recommended two star hotels in Avignon and for about five euros more per night, found a potential three star hotel that was much better siutated, cleaner, bigger and quieter." "It is very difficult to find guide books for this area. This one has lots of specifics. Information is given either by the area & village as well as by interest. There are maps of vineyards, museums, forests, food specialties and festivals.
It includes the large cities and details on the tiniest villages.
Andorra is also included.

"I must admit to being very disapointed by this book. It claims to be a guide to the Pyrenees but in fact actually covers only about a quarter of the region.

It is completely silent on anything Spanish and ignored the Atlantic end of the Pyrenees as well. A token page on Andorra was included. It is a very pretty book but it lacks substance. A guide book needs more than pictures to fill it, it must have some hard information as well. For example there is no weather information at all, this in a region where weather is fairly important depending on your reason for going. All told 1 star and a recommendation to pass along the shelf to something more meaningful." "The All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling is the best manual I have read. It tackles the problems faces by the second year skier wishing to become advanced. I have been taking lessons and was told to do allsorts of movements that I did not understand. This book puts those movements into perspective. On smooth piste at low speed they were unnecessary, at speed on rough and powder they become fundamental.

I practice on a dry slope. Whilst reading the book I became an advanced skier overnight. All the things had been taught in training now made sense. Because I now understood why, I was able to identify the different elements and embody them in my technique.

There is an effective section on equipment.

I owe a lot to Mr Elling. He has saved me a fortune in tuition. This book is not for the raw beginner but as soon as you know that you want to ski beyond the intermediate level buy the book and grow into it. Thanks Mr Elling, I hope this sells some more for you."
